Day 1: Arrival in Pula

Pula city center

Arrive in Pula and be welcomed with a private transfer to Park Plaza Histria, a modern resort perched on the Adriatic coast. After settling into your spacious sea-view room, step out for a gentle stroll along the waterfront promenade. Explore the Roman Amphitheater, imagining gladiators in the arena as the sun casts golden light across the stone. Wander through the historic center, stopping at a local café for a cappuccino or a glass of sparkling Malvazija while watching the world go by. End your evening with a seaside dinner at the hotel or a nearby konoba, savoring fresh seafood with a local wine pairing.

  • Why I recommend it: Pula offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and coastal calm—a grounding first day that lets you breathe in the Adriatic air.

  • Insider tip: Time your evening stroll to catch the sunset over the harbor—the reflection on the water feels almost cinematic.

Day 2: Pastel streets, harbor views & mindful wandering in Rovinj

Rovinj, Croatia

A private transfer delivers you to Rovinj, where you’ll check in at Hotel Lone, nestled amid pine forests yet just steps from the harbor. Begin with a slow morning walk through Rovinj’s Old Town—colorful pastel buildings, flower-filled balconies, and cobblestone streets invite you to wander without a schedule. Climb the St. Euphemia Church bell tower for sweeping views of the Adriatic, islands, and Rovinj’s terracotta rooftops. In the afternoon, explore hidden galleries or relax at a café watching local fishermen bring in their catch. As evening falls, enjoy a private sunset aperitivo on the harbor.

  • Why I recommend it: Rovinj is intimate yet lively, where every street feels like a photograph waiting to be taken.

  • Insider tip: Early mornings are magical—the town is quiet, the light is soft, and local artisans are often working in their studios.

Day 3: Olive oil & truffles

Local truffle shop

Venture inland to experience Istria’s culinary soul. Start at a family-run olive oil estate, where the owner shares stories of centuries-old methods producing rich, fragrant oils. Then, head into the forested hills near Motovun for a truffle-hunting adventure with a trained dog and local guide. After discovering these prized treasures, enjoy a private lunch highlighting fresh truffles paired with Malvazija wine, rustic breads, and local cheeses. Return to Hotel Lone in Rovinj for a mindful afternoon, perhaps with a spa treatment, a quiet swim, or journaling on the terrace.

  • Why I recommend it: This day is a sensory immersion—taste, smell, and touch Istria’s authentic flavors while connecting with its traditions.

  • Insider tip: Ask the guide to show you how to identify truffles in the wild—a hands-on skill that makes the experience unforgettable.

Day 4: Hilltop villages & vineyards

Motovun, Istria

Take a private driver and explore the medieval hilltop village of Motovun and surrounding villages. Walk along stone streets lined with colorful shutters and flowerpots, stopping at cafes to enjoy the quiet rhythm of village life. Take in panoramic vineyard views stretching across valleys dotted with olive trees. Perhaps enjoy a light tasting at a small local winery along the way. Return to Hotel Lone in the evening for dinner or a reflective walk through Zlatni Rt Park.

  • Why I recommend it: Hilltop villages feel timeless—they are quiet, contemplative, and visually stunning.

  • Insider tip: Capture photos or simply pause at sunset on Motovun’s walls—the valley below is bathed in golden light.

Day 5: Wine & countryside luxury

Grand Hotel Park Rovinj

Embark on a private wine tour through Brtonigla, visiting boutique vineyards where winemakers share the story behind every bottle. Taste Malvazija and Teran wines paired with local cheeses, olive oil, and charcuterie. Learn about the soil, the sun, and sustainable practices that make Istria’s wines exceptional. In the afternoon, check in to Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, a serene retreat with luxurious rooms, a spa, and private paths through pine forests. Relax poolside, enjoy a massage, or stroll along coastal trails before a quiet dinner in the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant.

  • Why I recommend it: Wine connects you to Istria’s land, people, and story—it’s an authentic luxury experience.

  • Insider tip: Ask the sommelier about unusual local varietals like vino pazzo—quirky, small-batch wines you won’t find elsewhere.

Day 6: Art, music & hilltop magic in Grožnjan

Local shop in Grožnjan

Take a private drive to Grožnjan, Istria’s hilltop art village. Wander narrow streets lined with galleries and artisan workshops, watching painters, ceramicists, and musicians at work. Enjoy a coffee on a terrace overlooking valleys of vineyards and olive groves. Explore small studios, and perhaps purchase a handmade souvenir directly from an artist. Return to Grand Park Hotel Rovinj for a peaceful evening, enjoying a leisurely dinner while reflecting on the region’s creativity and serenity.

  • Why I recommend it: Grožnjan is Istria’s artistic soul—a quiet, inspiring village that nurtures curiosity and connection.

  • Insider tip: Visit early to enjoy solitude and see the artists setting up their work before the day’s visitors arrive.

Day 7: Farewell Istria

Café lineup along Rovinj’s seaside

Enjoy your final morning at Grand Park Hotel Rovinj. Take a mindful walk along the coast, savor a leisurely breakfast with sea views, or enjoy a last spa treatment. A private transfer takes you to Pula Airport, leaving you with memories of rolling vineyards, cobblestone streets, and Adriatic sunsets that linger long after departure.

  • Why I recommend it: Seven days allows you to fully immerse in Istria—its coast, countryside, culinary traditions, and warmth.

Need to know

Packing & what to wear

Istria’s charm lies in its mix of seaside elegance and countryside authenticity, so pack with both in mind. Days along the coast call for light, breathable fabrics—linens, cottons, and flowy dresses or relaxed resort wear are perfect. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must for exploring cobblestoned towns like Rovinj and Motovun. Evenings often bring a light breeze, so carry a shawl or light sweater, especially if dining al fresco by the water. For winery visits or countryside experiences, smart casual attire works beautifully—think neutrals and natural textures that blend with Istria’s earthy tones. A sun hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are essential for the Adriatic sun. And don’t forget a swimsuit—many hotels have gorgeous pools or private access to the sea.

Insider tip: Istrians dress effortlessly—polished but never pretentious. Pack pieces that make you feel relaxed yet elegant.

Currency & payments

Croatia uses the euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most shops. However, it’s smart to carry some cash for small local markets, cafes, or countryside experiences, where card terminals may be spotty. ATMs are easily found in all towns, and exchange offices are reliable.

Insider tip: I like to keep a few €10 and €20 notes handy for tips and local purchases—it saves time and supports small businesses directly.

Tipping etiquette

While tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s very much appreciated and considered a gesture of respect for good service.

  • Restaurants: Leave around 10 percent of the bill or round up to the nearest whole amount.

  • Cafés or bars: Rounding up a euro or two is perfect.

  • Drivers and guides: For private drivers or guides, €20 to €50 per day depending on the service and duration is thoughtful.

  • Hotel staff: €2 to €5 per day for housekeeping or bell staff is customary in luxury properties.

Insider tip: If someone goes above and beyond—offers local insights, customizes an experience, or helps with something unexpected—a personal thank you and a few extra euros go a long way.

Dining & culinary culture

Meals in Istria are meant to be savored, not rushed. Locals take pride in slow, seasonal cooking—fresh seafood by the coast, truffles and game inland, and plenty of olive oil and wine everywhere in between. Lunch is often the heartiest meal of the day, while dinner tends to be later and more leisurely.

Insier tip: Ask for the “menu of the day” (dnevni meni) in smaller konobas—it’s often the freshest and most local choice. And always say yes to olive oil tastings; each family has its own distinct flavor profile.

Weather & when to visit

Istria enjoys a Mediterranean climate—warm summers, mild springs, and golden autumns.

  • May–June: Ideal for active travelers who enjoy mild weather, cycling, and fewer crowds.

  • July–August: Sunny, lively, and perfect for the sea—just pack light and plan dinners early or late.

  • September–October: My favorite—the grape harvest, truffle season, and soft golden light make it a photographer’s dream.

Insider tip: Always carry a light jacket for evenings by the water—the Adriatic breeze feels wonderful but can surprise you after sunset.

Transportation & getting around

This itinerary includes private transfers for seamless comfort, but Istria is also easy to explore independently. Roads are excellent and scenic, winding through vineyards, olive groves, and charming villages.

Insider tip: If you rent a car, choose a compact model—streets in old towns can be narrow. Parking near the historic centers of Rovinj and Pula is limited, so look for public lots just outside the old town and enjoy walking in.

Customs & local etiquette

Croatians are friendly, warm, and proud of their heritage—a smile and a simple greeting go a long way. Say “dobar dan” (good day) when entering shops or restaurants, and “hvala” (thank you) when leaving. Locals appreciate authenticity and respect; being polite and curious opens doors to genuine connections.

Insider tip: Don’t rush conversations—people love to share stories about their village, their olive oil, or their wine. Let those moments unfold; that’s where the real travel magic happens.

Local experiences & mindful travel

Istria is best experienced slowly. Whether you’re sipping wine under vineyard vines, walking through a sleepy hilltop town, or listening to waves in Rovinj, give yourself permission to pause and savor. Supporting family-owned wineries, small art studios, and local farms helps preserve the very traditions that make Istria so special.

Insider tip: Buy olive oil or truffle salt directly from local producers—it’s the perfect way to bring a piece of Istria home.

Practical notes

  • Water: Tap water is safe and excellent—crisp and fresh from mountain springs.

  • Electricity: 230V (European standard plug types C & F).

  • Language: Croatian is official, but English and Italian are widely spoken.

  • Safety: Istria is extremely safe—it’s common to leave doors open and feel at ease walking at night.

  • Insider tip: Locals are incredibly helpful—if you get lost or need directions, just ask. They’ll likely walk you there themselves.
