Travel tips for visiting Oaxaca

  • Depending on where you’re flying from, you may need to connect in Mexico City (CDMX)—try to book a morning flight to enjoy your first day in Oaxaca.

  • There are no Ubers in Oaxaca City. While you don’t need a car to explore the historic center, you’ll want to hire a trusted driver or tour for day trips (Hierve el Agua, Monte Albán, mezcal distilleries, or nearby pueblos).

  • The best time to visit is October through April for pleasant weather and cultural events like Día de los Muertos. The off-season (May–September) brings fewer crowds and lush green landscapes—but it can get warm.

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes. Oaxaca’s cobblestone streets and markets are best explored on foot.

  • Carry cash (pesos). Most restaurants and boutiques take cards, but markets, small cafés, and tips are usually cash-only.

  • Try the street food—safely. Go where it’s busy and fresh. Tlayudas, memelas, and nieves are must-trys.

  • Respect local traditions. Many artisans and mezcal makers are from indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec communities—ask before taking photos and buy directly when you can to support them.
