Curator’s statement

Saint Lucia is the most breathtaking Caribbean island I’ve visited, with its dramatic landscapes and warm, welcoming atmosphere. The towering Pitons in the south create a striking backdrop you won’t find anywhere else in the region. After traveling there in October 2024 and comparing it to other islands I’ve visited, it truly stood out for its natural beauty and consistently perfect weather. It’s a place that feels both awe-inspiring and deeply relaxing, making it unforgettable.

Things to do in St. Lucia

Views from the Pitons hike

  • Boat trip around the island: This is a great way to see both the north and south of the island. Make sure to do a full day, so you can take part in some snorkelling and swimming. Our trip included a stop off to snorkel outside Ti Kaye Resort and to visit the capital, Castries. We could go shopping and grab some local food with our guide. Our tour also took us to Marigot Bay, where you can see some celebrity houses, including Oprah’s!

  • Hiking the Pitons: This activity is definitely only for fit, athletic people as it is a very physically demanding trail. You are required to use local guides, which you can organise as you pay your entrance fee. Make sure to start early as it takes about four hours round trip to complete the hike. I also recommend renting walking poles (especially if it’s a drizzly day). Although the hike is extremely demanding, the views are stunning and it’s a great opportunity to talk to some local people!

  • Sulphur Springs and Toraille Waterfall: I was very skeptical of the Sulphur Springs, as I was worried it would be ‘too touristy’ and it is definitely commercialised. However, if you time it right, it can be fairly quiet. The Sulphur Springs are even used by locals as the mud and its natural remedies are said to make you look twenty years younger! Your skin will feel so smooth and you’ll get some great photos out of it. Just five minutes from the springs is a beautiful waterfall that my family happened to be the only people at! Worth stopping by for the photo op and a quick dip in the (very) cold, fresh water.

Places to eat & drink in St. Lucia

Jade Mountain Club sunset view

  • Jade Mountain Club: This restaurant is for Jade Mountain guests only. It is very couple heavy, but we had so much fun as a family. You must book drinks at the bar ahead of dinner, in order to get the perfect unobstructed sunset view! The food offering is diverse and changes constantly, with many ingredients being sourced from onsite gardens. The service is exceptional and the live music makes the night even better.

  • Ladera Resort, Dasheene: We unfortunately missed sunset at this reservation, but with Ladera Resort being placed high up between the two Pitons, the view is the centrepiece at this restaurant. Again, a lot of ingredients are sourced from their onsite gardens, offering fresh farm-to-table options.

  • Bonté Restaurant and Bar: Located at Sugar Beach Resort, this is great to visit if you want to see the white sands of this famous beach, but aren’t staying at the resort. The restaurant is beautiful, modern, and plays wonderful live music along the waterfront. (They’ll even sing you happy birthday with a huge sparkler if it happens to be your special day!)

  • Martha’s Tables: If you are looking for traditional food operated by a local family, Martha’s Tables is a must-visit. The restaurant is an open-air verandah with colorful plants grown all around. The rum punch is tasty and strong, but the main courses are full of flavor. This is worth the visit to get a taste of the local food!

Need to know

What’s worth skipping:

  • Castries: Having stopped off at the capital city as a part of our boat tour, the city is buzzing with activity, which may not be for everyone looking for a relaxing beach holiday. We were with a guide, so we were taken to specific spots to visit. I think there are more beautiful spots to visit on the island, rather than the city if you are looking to cut down on excursions.

  • Using the resort to book drivers/activities: Local companies are the much better route for booking activities, rather than going through a resort. You can save large amounts of money and ensure this money actually reaches the local community. We ended up meeting our driver, Junior, on a walk down to the beach one of our first days and he ended up booking all our excursions for the trip!
