Advisor - Affordable Luxury in Athens
Curator’s statement

Greece has always had a special place in my heart. I was that kid who devoured every Greek mythology book I could find (anyone else?) Visiting feels like stepping straight into those stories, with the Acropolis rising above the city like a scene from a legend, yet everything about modern Athens still feels effortlessly cool. Think gorgeous rooftop bars, aesthetic cafés, and the kind of meals that make you close your eyes after every bite—and the best part? You can experience it all without spending a fortune. With a few insider tips and smart choices, Athens proves that luxury travel doesn’t always need a luxury price tag.

Things to do in Athens, Greece

Exploring the Acropolis

  • Visit the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum: An absolute must—standing at the foot of the Acropolis feels like stepping straight into history. Wander through the ancient ruins, soak up those breathtaking city views, then head to the Acropolis Museum for a beautifully curated glimpse into Greece’s legendary past. Pro tip: Go early morning or at golden hour for fewer crowds and dreamy light.

  • Railbike Ride through the Peloponnese: Such a unique experience! You pedal along old railway tracks surrounded by mountains, bridges, and villages. It’s scenic, peaceful, and a little bit adventurous. It’s the kind of offbeat activity that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a hidden side of Greece, and is definitely doable as a day trip from Athens!

  • Swim at Lake Vouliagmeni: Just outside Athens, this natural thermal lake is a total gem. Warm, crystal-clear, and framed by cliffs. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing dip or an easy day trip from the city when you need a break from sightseeing. Bring your swimsuit and plan to stay for sunset; it’s magical.

  • Day trip to the Athenian Riviera: While you’re over in the Vouliagmeni area, be sure to check out the other beaches the Athenian Riviera has to offer! Full of chic beach clubs, hidden coves, and relaxed coastal walks, it’s an easy way to add a touch of Mediterranean luxury to your Athens itinerary without ever really leaving town.

  • Watch the sunset from Lycabettus Hill: A short hike (or funicular ride!) takes you to one of the best panoramic views in Athens. From the top, you can see the Acropolis glowing in the distance as the sun dips behind the city. Total main character moment.

  • Wander through Anafiotika: Hidden beneath the Acropolis, Anafiotika feels like a tiny Cycladic island right in the city. Think whitewashed houses, blooming bougainvillea, and winding stairways that make you forget you’re in a capital. It’s a quiet, photogenic escape that feels secret and special.

  • Visit the Panathenaic Stadium: Built entirely of marble and home to the first modern Olympic Games, this stadium is a must for history and sports lovers. Standing on the track where athletes once competed feels surreal, and it’s one of the few places in Athens where you can literally run through history.

  • Discover street art in Psyrri and Exarchia: Athens has such a vibrant creative side, and the street art scene is incredible. Spend a morning wandering through these edgy, colorful neighborhoods to see giant murals, political art, and hidden messages that tell the story of modern Athens.

Places to eat & drink in Athens, Greece

The stunning views from Bar 65 at St George Lycabettus.

  • Bar 65 (at St. George Lycabettus): One of my favorite places to grab a drink in Athens, and conveniently located at my most recommended hotel! It’s chic, calm, and has the most beautiful panoramic views of the city lights. It’s the kind of spot where you feel like you’re living your best 5-star life… even if you’re just having a glass of wine.

  • The Zillers Roof Garden: Another rooftop because why wouldn’t you want to stare at the dreamy views of the Acropolis through sips of champagne? This spot nails the balance between fine dining and relaxed elegance. Go for sunset cocktails or dinner. It feels ultra-luxurious, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the prices (especially with that view).

  • Ama Lachei stis Nefelis: Set in a gorgeous old-school courtyard, this place feels local, vibrant, and full of charm. It’s ideal for a leisurely lunch or early dinner with sharing plates and great energy. It’s one of those places you’ll want to return to.

  • To Kati Allo: For a more local, down-to-earth meal, this family-run taverna near the Acropolis is a gem. The food is traditional, authentic, and made with love—proof that you don’t need a fancy restaurant to eat really well in Athens.

  • Dope Roasting Co.: If you’re into cute, aesthetic cafés, Dope is a must. Great coffee, minimalist design, and the perfect vibe for a mid-morning recharge between sightseeing stops (bonus: it’s very Instagram-friendly).

  • Oinoscent: A cozy, stylish wine bar tucked in the heart of Athens—perfect for a laid-back evening. The sommeliers are friendly (not snobby), and the selection of Greek wines is incredible. Order a cheese board and let them pick a glass for you.

  • Cherchez La Femme: A super cute, retro-inspired bistro serving elevated Greek meze and spritzes in a chic corner spot near Syntagma. It’s stylish without trying too hard, and perfect for people-watching.

Need to know

Athens is one of those cities where timing is everything. Visit in the shoulder seasons (April–June or September–October) and you’ll get perfect sightseeing weather, fewer crowds, and much better hotel rates (plus, those rooftop bars are even more enjoyable when they’re not packed!). Many luxury hotels offer amazing value compared to other European capitals, especially when you book early or through a travel advisor with insider perks. Public transport and walking will get you almost everywhere, so you can save your euros for the good stuff, like that sunset drink with an Acropolis view.
