Advisor - A Peaceful Stay in Kyoto: Arashiyama Travel Guide
Curator’s statement

Kyoto’s seasonal beauty is world-renowned, but so is the challenge of overtourism — especially during peak times like fall foliage. I had always dreamed of experiencing Kyoto in autumn and sharing that magic with my parents, who are now in their 70s and 80s. I chose Suiran in Arashiyama for its balance — close enough to Kyoto Station for convenience, yet tucked away in nature to offer calm amidst the crowds. The vibrant leaves, peaceful riverside mornings and quality time with family made this trip unforgettable.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Things to do in Kyoto

  • Bamboo Grove: Start your morning early and wander through the famous Bamboo Forest before the crowds arrive.

  • Sagano Romantic Train: A nostalgic sightseeing train that weaves through the mountains along the Hozugawa River. We recommend booking round-trip tickets and staying on for the return — the last station doesn’t have much to do.

  • Stroll along the Katsura River: A quiet walk by the river offers sweeping views of nature and peaceful scenery. We even spotted a Hozugawa River Boat Ride gliding by — a scene right out of a painting.

  • Arashiyama mountain hike: A gentle trail with stunning views over the Katsura River and forested landscape.

  • Tenryu-ji Temple: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with spectacular gardens and architecture just steps from the Bamboo Grove.

Places to eat & drink in Kyoto

  • Kyo-Suiran Kaiseki: Inside the hotel, this elegant restaurant serves seasonal kaiseki meals with views of the hotel’s Japanese garden.

  • Kati (Thai cuisine): Located in Dusit Thani Kyoto, Kati offers a fresh break from Japanese food with vibrant flavors and a relaxing setting.

  • Hanbey-Fu: A charming spot in central Kyoto serving specialty dishes with fu (a wheat-based ingredient) and yuba (soy milk skin) — both traditional parts of Kyoto cuisine.

  • Tofu Ryori Matsugae: A peaceful place to enjoy the elegance of Kyoto’s tofu-based dishes.

  • Don’t miss Isetan’s food hall at Kyoto Station. Grab a box of Futaba Daifuku — soft mochi filled with red bean paste and black beans — and enjoy it at the Happy Terrace rooftop garden for a relaxing view over the city.

Need to know

  • Getting there: Kyoto is just two hours and 15 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train (Nozomi). Tickets range from $120 to $160 USD one way.

  • How long to stay: Spend two to three days here to explore Kyoto’s highlights and hidden gems.

  • Sightseeing: Take the Kyoto Sky Bus for a relaxing, crowd-free tour of the city.

  • Best time to visit: Plan for spring (cherry blossoms) or autumn (fall foliage) for the most beautiful scenery, but note that the peak timing for sakura and fall leaves is typically within a 10-day window. March, April, May, October, November and December are typically good seasons to travel, with fewer crowds and equally stunning views.

  • Traveling with family: Stay near Kyoto Station, Arashiyama or Shozan Resort for easy access and a quieter experience.
