Advisor - Katakolon Port: A Hidden Gem
Curator’s statement

This place is such a hidden gem! I have visited many times from a cruise ship. As soon as you get off the ship, you are in town. There is stunning crystal water, lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and local goods all across one long street. You can visit Olympia or stay local, there is something for everyone.

Things to do in Katakolon, Greece

Tip: The coffee in the ocean-facing cafe, 'Del Mar', is stunning! A must visit.

Explore Ancient Olympia

One of the most unforgettable experiences from Katakolon is visiting Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Walking through the original stadium and ruins feels incredibly surreal and full of history.

Wander around Katakolon Harbour

I loved simply strolling around the pretty harbour lined with colourful buildings, cafés, and little boutiques. It has such a relaxed Greek island feel and is perfect for a slow morning by the sea.

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Olympia

The museum brings Ancient Olympia to life with fascinating statues, artefacts, and Olympic history. It’s a great stop if you want to understand more about the site before or after visiting.

Relax at Agios Andreas Beach

Just a short distance from the port, this beach is ideal for a peaceful swim or sunbathing break. The water is beautifully clear and much quieter than some of the bigger tourist beaches in Greece.

Try traditional Greek food

Katakolon is full of lovely family-run tavernas serving fresh seafood, grilled meats, and authentic Greek dishes. I highly recommend enjoying a long lunch with local wine overlooking the water.

Take the tourist train to Olympia

For an easy and scenic journey, you can take the train directly from Katakolon to Olympia. It’s a relaxed way to see more of the countryside without needing an organised tour.

Shop for local olive oil and souvenirs

The town has plenty of small shops selling local olive oil, handmade gifts, and Greek products. I found it a great place to pick up authentic souvenirs without the crowds.

Visit a local winery or olive farm

Many tours from the port offer wine tastings or olive farm experiences nearby. It’s such a lovely way to experience traditional Greek culture beyond the main tourist attractions.

Enjoy a seafront coffee

One of my favourite things to do here is simply sit at a waterfront café with an iced coffee and watch the cruise ships come and go. The atmosphere feels calm, welcoming, and very Greek.

Take a coastal walk

The coastline around Katakolon is beautiful for a gentle walk with sea views and fresh air. It’s the perfect option if you want a slower, more relaxing port day.

This spot is perfect for authentic Greek food with a slightly more modern feel. The grilled meats and fresh salads are amazing after a morning exploring Olympia.

A cosy taverna known for friendly service and traditional homemade Greek cuisine. It feels very local and welcoming, which made the experience even more special.

A great place for cocktails, coffee, or a quick drink with views across the harbour. I especially loved stopping here in the afternoon to soak up the atmosphere.

Mimis Restaurant

A family-run restaurant serving generous portions of classic Greek favourites. The seafood here is incredibly fresh and the hospitality is amazing.

A traditional Greek ouzeri with local dishes, seafood, and plenty of Greek charm. I loved the authentic atmosphere and relaxed evening vibe here.

Need to know

Katakolon is such an easy and relaxed cruise port to explore independently, which makes it perfect for a slower port day. The cruise ship docks right near the town, so it’s very easy to walk on and off the ship throughout the day without needing transport. There’s a small beach to the left of the port and the main town, cafés and restaurants to the right, all within walking distance. I also found the duty-free shop just outside the port great for perfumes, Greek gifts, olive oil, and souvenirs before heading back onboard—even some snacks.
