Old town gastronomy

  • Galion: Fine dining by the water. Seated right on the edge of the bay, Galion is a place to truly admire the Adriatic in all its glory. The water glimmers as the sun sets behind the mountains, and each dish celebrates the bounty of the sea. From delicate seafood to perfectly paired local wines, every bite feels like a love letter to this magical coastline. Dining here isn’t just a meal—it’s a full sensory experience that lingers in memory long after you leave.

  • Konoba Catovica Mlini: Traditional Montenegrin charm. Tucked away by a gentle riverside, this rustic gem is the epitome of Montenegrin hospitality. I admire the way the chefs honor tradition with dishes full of flavor and heart. Sitting here, savoring freshly caught fish or hearty local specialties while listening to the river’s gentle flow, feels like stepping into a storybook. It’s a place where food and atmosphere blend into a timeless, authentic experience.

  • Cattaro Café: Perfect espresso and people watching. Nestled in a quiet square in Kotor’s Old Town, Cattaro Café is where mornings slow down and the world feels just right. I admire its simplicity and charm: a perfectly pulled espresso, flaky pastries, and a spot to watch the cobblestone streets come alive. It’s one of those little corners that makes you feel part of the town, giving you a quiet moment to admire both your surroundings and the rhythm of local life.

  • Porto: Waterfront dining and vibes. Right along the marina, Porto is a lively, sun-kissed spot where every detail makes you admire the beauty of Kotor. The seafood is fresh, the flavors vibrant, and the breeze off the bay adds an incomparable touch. Whether sharing a meal with friends or enjoying a quiet dinner, Porto invites you to linger, savor, and soak in the breathtaking coastal atmosphere.

  • Astoria Restaurant: Romantic evenings in Kotor. Astoria is where elegance meets heart. I admire the way it combines cozy interiors with refined cuisine, making every evening feel special. Candlelight dances across the table as flavors of the Adriatic come alive in every bite. • Forza Café: Sunset cocktails. Perched on a terrace overlooking the bay, Forza is my favorite spot to admire the day’s end. As the sun dips into the Adriatic, cocktails in hand, you feel both energized and serene. The views, the soft evening light, and the lively yet relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect place to reflect, savor, and simply admire the beauty of Kotor from above.

Here, you can pause, reflect on the day’s adventures, and simply admire the Adriatic at its most magical.

Need to know

Visiting Kotor is like stepping into a living postcard—so a few tips will help you make the most of every moment without feeling rushed. First, wear comfortable shoes—those charming cobblestone streets and fortress steps are beautiful, but your feet will thank you if you plan ahead. Early mornings or late afternoons are the magic hours for exploring Old Town: the streets are quieter, the light is soft, and you can admire the architecture without fighting the midday crowds.

Weather-wise, summers can be sunny and warm, perfect for sipping a cocktail by the bay, but don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle—you’ll be doing a lot of walking and soaking in the views! Spring and autumn are ideal if you prefer a slower pace, cooler temperatures, and the extra luxury of quiet streets and cozy restaurants.

Montenegro uses the Euro, even though it’s not part of the EU—handy to know when you’re admiring menus and local wines. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; a few extra euros for excellent service always earns a smile (and maybe a secret local recommendation).

Cultural customs are easy to respect: people are warm and hospitable, so a simple “hvala” (thank you) goes a long way. Take your time to admire the everyday moments—the fisherman preparing his catch, a street musician playing in a square, or the locals enjoying their coffee unhurriedly. Those small moments often become the memories you cherish most.

And finally, give yourself permission to wander off the map a little. While Kotor Old Town is stunning, some of the most magical experiences happen in quiet alleyways, tucked-away cafés, or during a spontaneous stroll along the waterfront. Trust me—there’s something irresistible about discovering a view, a dish, or a moment that feels like it’s just for you.

In short: pack your curiosity, a sense of adventure, and your love for good food and beautiful views—and get ready to fall a little in love with Kotor every single day.
