Our Story
I once flew forty-four hours to spend nine on the ground in Johannesburg. The best part of that trip cost almost nothing, and it's the reason I do this now.
I'd been cooped up in Nashville long enough that a cheap fare and a Delta status run started sounding reasonable, so I flew Nashville to Los Angeles to London to Johannesburg and back two days later, with a carry-on and no hotel.
At 3am the night before I left I booked a private guide, told him I had four hours, and asked for the version most people never see. His name was Mark, a Kruger safari guide picking up city work to get through COVID, and he was standing in arrivals when I came through, which matters more than you'd think when you have four hours and no time to waste. He showed me Soweto, Mandela's house on Vilakazi Street, and the distance between the haves and the have nots, then sat me down for lunch outside where cyclists were stopping for a beer partway through a ride. I can still taste the bread and smell whatever they were cooking it over. I was exhausted and my eyes were wide open.
That was 2021, and it was the middle of three trips that changed how I think about all of this. A few months before, I'd been at Atelier Playa Mujeres on a work trip with low expectations, because all-inclusives weren't my thing and I'd known what five-star felt like since the St. Regis Mexico City. It changed my mind. I'm not going to pretend an all-inclusive in Mexico is a cultural awakening, but the service was excellent, the food was genuinely good, the grounds were beautiful, and the bathrooms were stocked with Molton Brown. I'm a sucker for small details, and I judge a hotel on its bath amenities. A year later Caroline and I wanted to plan something special for our dad's 70th, and I knew Atelier was the answer before we'd finished talking about it. Everyone could move at their own pace and eat well and do what they wanted, which is what that trip needed to be. Different trips have different jobs.
Then in 2023 I was picking a destination for my birthday, because of course I'm the friend who plans the trip, and I'd landed on Tulum. My friend Michael, who likes a beach fine but wanted a trip with more going on, asked if I'd ever been to Greece. Neither of us had, so I said "sounds cool, please hold" and started tapping on my keyboard. "Hey, this Virgin Voyages thing looks kinda cool." We swapped the Conrad Tulum for Resilient Lady's inaugural season out of Athens. First cruise for both of us, on a line still new to the market, booked on a whim. I still think about sailing out of the Bay of Kotor. That whim turned into 185 nights at sea with Virgin and a love affair with cruising I did not see coming.
Turns out three trips in three years is what it took to work out what I want to be when I grow up. So in early 2024 I got to work. A career in sales taught me that access gets you in the door and everything after that is relationships, which is most of what I do now. Fora and Virtuoso get me a seat at the table with hotels, cruise lines, and partners on the ground. Then I make the calls, and you show up to a better room than you booked, a table that was full an hour ago, and someone at the front desk who already knows why you're there. For most trips it costs you nothing extra. Fora named me a Cruise Specialist along the way, which is a specialty and not a limit.
Some of my favorite work is a week in Italy, a long weekend somewhere you'd never thought to go, or a resort where the whole point is that nobody has to agree on anything. Whatever you're planning, tell me what you're celebrating and I'll take it from there.
Travel Style
I'm drawn to hotels with a sense of place, restaurants with something to say, and the extra night in a city because rushing through it would be a mistake.
Luxury doesn't have to be the most expensive option. Sometimes it's a suite. Sometimes it's fifteen rooms and a great bar. Getting that call right matters more to me than what it costs.
I'd rather you have two great meals than six good ones, and see one neighborhood properly than four through a bus window. The best day of most trips is the one with nothing scheduled after lunch.
On ships, the longest amenity list is rarely the answer. What matters is who you want to be surrounded by for seven days.
I'll tell you where to splurge, where to save, and when to skip something altogether. If a hotel isn't right for you I'd rather say so than book it. And yes, I will absolutely have a restaurant recommendation. That's my style. Tell me yours and we'll build around it.

Unfortunately for me, my brother is very good at this.
Bryant has been my travel partner for essentially my entire life—although, in the beginning, neither of us was consulted about the arrangement.
We spent our childhood vacations stuck beside one another in cars and airplanes, sharing hotel rooms, beds, bathrooms, and the character-building experience of waiting patiently while the other person did something we absolutely did not want to do. We learned early that we rarely wanted the same thing at precisely the same moment.
And somehow, against all odds, we became exceptionally good at traveling together.
These days, I actually choose to travel with Bryant—which may be the strongest endorsement a younger sister can possibly give.
The occasional sibling irritation still rises to the surface, naturally. We may briefly become convinced that the other person is intolerable, exchange a few pointed remarks, walk approximately twenty feet apart for a while, and then reconvene over something delicious as though nothing happened. It’s a highly sophisticated diplomatic system we’ve spent decades perfecting.
But when it comes to actually planning a trip, Bryant is irritatingly good at it.
I love traveling with him because Bryant likes making decisions and I emphatically do not. Fortunately, he has impeccable taste, so surrendering control has turned out to be one of my better life choices.
Every trip he has designed for me—including our recent trip through Europe—has somehow felt like the trip of a lifetime.
What makes Bryant exceptional isn’t simply that he researches a destination. Lots of people can compile a list of hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Bryant pays attention to people.
He understands that the best trip isn’t necessarily the one containing the greatest number of famous places. It’s the one that feels unmistakably like your trip.
For me, that means art, architecture, beautiful interiors, extraordinary food, wandering through neighborhoods, discovering strange little places I would never have found myself, and experiencing a city rather than simply documenting that I stood in front of its major attractions. We aren’t particularly interested in racing from tourist landmark to tourist landmark so we can say we’ve seen them. We’d rather walk until our feet hurt, eat something wonderful, stumble across something unexpected, and temporarily convince ourselves we live there.
Bryant understands that instinctively.
He finds the hidden gems that are right up my artistic alley. He researches restaurants around my food allergies. He thinks about transportation before we arrive. He figures out the train giving instructions in Danish while I contribute moral support and occasionally ask whether he’s sure we’re going the right way.
He is usually sure.
Annoying, but useful.
More importantly, he understands that comfort isn’t frivolous; it’s part of good travel planning. He considers how people actually function once the beautiful itinerary meets reality.
Lou sleeps terribly? Excellent. Bryant has found a hotel with wonderful pillows, beautiful linens, premium bath products, and an atmosphere sufficiently serene to convince my nervous system that perhaps we are not, in fact, under attack.
Two adult siblings traveling together who love each other dearly but may eventually need to stop looking at one another? He thinks about space.
Complicated food allergy? Already researched.
Train logistics? Handled.
Something goes sideways? There is a plan.
And, because Bryant is Bryant, probably a backup plan for the plan.
That attention to detail creates something invaluable when you’re far from home: ease. Instead of spending a trip constantly figuring out what happens next, you get to be present for it.
I’ll admit that initially I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about letting my brother call all the shots. This is, after all, someone whose qualifications I once evaluated primarily on whether he was hogging the bathroom.
But the concern disappeared quickly.
Bryant is thorough without making travel feel regimented, discerning without being pretentious, and organized without removing the spontaneity that makes traveling exciting. He knows when something is worth the splurge, when it isn’t, and when the better experience is the little place around the corner nobody thought to put on a Top Ten list.
Most importantly, he doesn’t create generic vacations.
Every trip Bryant has planned for me has been tailored to me—my personality, interests, health considerations, restrictions, budget, comfort level, and the things he knows will make my eyes light up when we turn a corner.
That is a rare skill.
