Hotel Spotlight: The Crown, Napier, New Zealand

Our three-day stay at The Crown Hotel was the perfect introduction to Napier and the wider Hawke’s Bay region. Situated in Ahuriri, one of Napier’s most sought-after waterfront neighborhoods, the hotel combines modern luxury with heritage charm. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming, offering a slower pace compared to larger city hotels. The waterfront setting meant we were only steps away from the beach, local cafés, and restaurants, while still being a short drive from Napier’s Art Deco city center and the region’s renowned wineries.

We stayed in a Premium Suite featuring a private spa bath, which quickly became the highlight of our accommodation. After spending the day sightseeing and exploring Hawke’s Bay, returning to the room for a long soak was the perfect way to relax. The suite felt spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a comfortable living area, quality furnishings, and a private balcony where we could enjoy views across Ahuriri. It struck the ideal balance between luxury and comfort, making it particularly well suited to couples looking for a romantic escape.

Day two was dedicated to discovering everything Hawke’s Bay has to offer. The Crown’s location made it easy to explore nearby vineyards, coastal scenery, and Napier’s famous Art Deco architecture. We spent the day visiting wineries, browsing boutique shops, and walking along Marine Parade before returning to Ahuriri for dinner by the waterfront. One of the things I appreciated most about staying at The Crown was being able to enjoy the attractions of Napier during the day while returning each evening to a quieter, more intimate part of town.

On our final day, we slowed down and enjoyed the local area. Ahuriri has a unique atmosphere that feels more like a seaside village than a city suburb, with waterfront pathways, charming cafés, and beautiful views across Hawke Bay. Before departing, we took one last walk along the water and enjoyed a final soak in the spa bath. It was the perfect end to a stay that felt equal parts relaxing retreat and destination discovery.

• If you’re interested in Napier’s famous Art Deco architecture, allow at least half a day to explore the city center and Marine Parade.

• While one night is possible, I recommend a minimum of three days to properly enjoy Napier, Ahuriri, and the surrounding wine region without feeling rushed.

• The property is particularly well suited to couples, anniversary trips, romantic getaways, and travelers seeking a boutique alternative to larger chain hotels.

• Don’t miss an early morning or sunset walk along the Ahuriri waterfront. The views across the bay are beautiful and offer a peaceful way to start or end the day.
