Venice Carnival: Ultimate Guide to Masks, Events & How to Experience It
Curator’s statement

Venice Carnival is something I had dreamed about since I was young—something I had only ever seen in books, filled with mystery, masks, and old-world glamour. In 2026, my husband and I finally planned a trip to experience it for my birthday, and it exceeded every expectation. There is something truly extraordinary about Venice during Carnival, where the city feels suspended between reality and fantasy. It’s decadent, theatrical, and undeniably magical—one of the most spectacular experiences I’ve ever had. I hope this guide inspires you to experience it for yourself and create your own unforgettable journey.

Where to stay in Venice

Planning a trip to Venice during Carnival requires a bit more intention than a typical visit. With so many events happening across multiple weeks, it’s important to decide what kind of experience you want to have. Are you hoping to see the Grand Opening on the Grand Canal, attend one of the iconic masked balls, or experience the final celebrations and costume competitions?

If you want to fully experience Carnival, plan to stay for up to two weeks. However, most travelers can capture the essence of it in three to five days by focusing on key events.

The Grand Opening on the Grand Canal is one of the most spectacular moments of Carnival, with costumed performers and decorated boats filling the water. It is also one of the most crowded. For a more elevated experience, I highly recommend booking a hotel or restaurant along the canal in advance—this allows you to enjoy the event with a more comfortable and unobstructed view.

The most iconic Carnival balls & events

Attending a masked ball is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience Venice Carnival. These events range from ultra-luxury, theatrical productions to more intimate, insider gatherings.

  • Il Ballo del Doge: Widely considered the most exclusive and extravagant event of Carnival, hosted by Antonia Sautter. Expect couture-level costumes, immersive performances, and a truly over-the-top atmosphere.

  • The Tiepolo Ball at Teatro La Fenice: A more traditional and elegant evening set inside Venice’s historic opera house, blending classical music, dance, and period-inspired sophistication.

  • Carnival in Love Grand Ball (Love Ball): A large-scale celebration that combines theatrical elements, dining, and performance, making it one of the most accessible formal ball experiences.

  • Official Dinner Show at Casino of Venice: A glamorous evening pairing fine dining with live entertainment in one of Venice’s most historic venues.

  • “Dancing Chocolate” at Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal: A unique daytime Carnival experience held in the historic Ridotto, combining sweets, music, and masked elegance in a lighter, more social setting.

  • The Glass Slipper Ball (Murano): A true insider experience held in the former church of Santa Chiara on Murano. The 15-minute boat ride across the lagoon adds to the magic, making the evening feel like a hidden escape from the main crowds. With a mix of seasoned Carnival attendees and those seeking something different, this ball offers a more intimate and distinctive atmosphere.

How to plan your experience

  • Book accommodations and event tickets as early as possible—many of the top events sell out months in advance.

  • Choose your dates based on priority: opening weekend, peak festivities, or closing celebrations.

  • Plan at least one signature event (like a ball) and balance it with time to explore the city.

  • Consider viewing major events from reserved spaces (hotels, terraces, restaurants) for a more elevated experience.

Need to know

Venice Carnival is inherently a luxury experience, and pricing reflects the exclusivity and demand of the season. From hotels to event tickets, costs rise significantly, particularly for prime locations and curated experiences. Rather than trying to do everything, I recommend prioritizing one or two standout moments and building your trip around them.
