Planning a trip to Venice during Carnival requires a bit more intention than a typical visit. With so many events happening across multiple weeks, it’s important to decide what kind of experience you want to have. Are you hoping to see the Grand Opening on the Grand Canal, attend one of the iconic masked balls, or experience the final celebrations and costume competitions?

If you want to fully experience Carnival, plan to stay for up to two weeks. However, most travelers can capture the essence of it in three to five days by focusing on key events.

The Grand Opening on the Grand Canal is one of the most spectacular moments of Carnival, with costumed performers and decorated boats filling the water. It is also one of the most crowded. For a more elevated experience, I highly recommend booking a hotel or restaurant along the canal in advance—this allows you to enjoy the event with a more comfortable and unobstructed view.

Attending a masked ball is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience Venice Carnival. These events range from ultra-luxury, theatrical productions to more intimate, insider gatherings.

• Il Ballo del Doge: Widely considered the most exclusive and extravagant event of Carnival, hosted by Antonia Sautter. Expect couture-level costumes, immersive performances, and a truly over-the-top atmosphere.
