The Algarve region of Portugal, especially around Lagos, is one of those places that instantly slows you down. Staying at Cascade Wellness Resort gave us the perfect home base to truly unwind, enjoy time as a family, and explore this stunning coastline. We spent seven full days here, and it ended up being the perfect mix of relaxing at the resort and getting out to experience everything the Algarve has to offer. The food, the people, and the scenery completely exceeded our expectations. It’s one of those trips that just feels easy in the best way.

About the resort & why it’s so special

This resort really feels like a destination within the Algarve.

It’s spread out, peaceful, and offers so much for families.

  • Three accommodation styles, hotel rooms, apartments, and private villas

  • We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment, spacious with a full kitchen and balconies on both sides

  • Multiple pools, including one with sand for kids

  • A full spa, fitness center, cycling trails, and tennis courts

  • Direct access to the Ponta da Piedade trails

There’s also so much built in for families and active travelers.

The Caskiddy Kids Club is such a highlight, with a pirate ship, indoor playroom, outdoor green space, and playground. It’s perfect for kids ages 3–12 and offers fun programs during holidays.

The Football Academy is another standout, where kids ages 5–15 can actually train on professional-level fields used by international teams.

You can also grab bikes right at the resort and ride along the cliffs, try paddleboarding nearby, or even take advantage of golf packages with access to top Algarve courses like Espiche, Boavista, and Palmares.

The location is incredible, too.

  • Porto de Mós Beach is just a short walk.

  • Dona Ana Beach is about 1.4 km away.

  • The Natural Park of Costa Vicentina is about 30 minutes away.

  • Algarve Motorsports Park is about a 20-minute drive.

It’s one of those places where you can be as active or as relaxed as you want, and that’s what makes it so special.

Day 1: Arrival, beach & easy dinner

After arriving, we explored the pools and then headed down the coastal trail to Praia do Canavial.

After swimming and playing, we had lunch at Restaurante Antonio.

What to order:

  • Fresh grilled fish

  • Light salads

  • Cold drinks with an ocean view

That evening, we stayed at the resort and had dinner at Senses Restaurant.

What to order:

  • Local fish

  • Steak

  • Seasonal vegetables

  • Portuguese wine

Day 2: Cliffs, gelato & views

We hiked toward Sol Nascente, stopping for lunch and gelato, which became a daily tradition.

We continued on to Ponta da Piedade, one of the most iconic views in the Algarve.

On the way back, we stopped at Restaurante Camilo for drinks.

That evening, we went into town, walked through the shops, and grabbed dinner.

Day 3: Surf day & town dinner

We rented boards from Lagos Surf Center and took the little boat across to the beach.

We spent the day surfing and relaxing, such a fun and easy setup.

That night, we ate at Adega da Marina.

What to order:

  • Grilled fish

  • Steak

  • Portuguese specialties

  • House wine

Back at the resort, we loved watching my daughter hit golf balls with the ocean breeze and waves right next to her. (This was a daily event to get ready for Ireland golfing.)

Day 4: Kayaking the coast

We went kayaking at Praia da Albandeira, and this was one of the biggest highlights of the entire trip.

The Algarve coastline is known for its dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, and natural rock arches, and kayaking lets you experience it in such a unique way. You’re not just looking at the scenery, you’re actually moving through it.

We paddled along the cliffs, into small caves, and through narrow openings in the rock formations, with the clearest blue water beneath us. Around every turn, there was something new to see, it felt like one of those moments where you just keep saying “wow.”

It was peaceful, a little adventurous, and something the whole family could enjoy together.

On the way back, we stopped at Rustico Restaurant.

What to order:

  • Wood-fired meats

  • Grilled fish

  • Rustic sides and wine

Day 5: Winery & slower Algarve day

We took a break from the beach and explored the countryside, heading to Quinta dos Vales Wine Estate.

This was such a nice change of pace, rolling vineyards, art installations, and a relaxed tasting experience.

What to enjoy:

  • A wine tasting flight

  • Local cheeses

  • Walking the grounds

It’s a great reminder that the Algarve isn’t just beaches.

Day 6: Pool, town & fun dinner

We spent more time enjoying the resort, relaxing by the pool, biking, and just slowing down.

That night, we went back into town and had dinner at Qian Tu Barbecue.

What to expect:

  • Cooking your own food at the table

  • Meats, vegetables, and dumplings

  • A fun, interactive experience

We ended the night walking through town and, of course, getting gelato again.

Day 7: Sunset & favorite meals

We wrapped up the trip with some of our favorite dinners.

At Amaré: Fresh seafood, light dishes, white wine, incredible sunset views from upstairs

At Don Toro Angus Grill: Steak, classic sides, red wine

Evenings in the Algarve

Almost every night, we found ourselves walking through Lagos.

The shops, the restaurants, the energy. It’s lively but still relaxed. It became part of our routine and something we all looked forward to.

Final thoughts

Spending a full week in the Algarve gave us the perfect balance.

We had time to truly relax at the resort, but also explore, from beaches and cliffs to surfing, kayaking, and even a winery.

It’s one of those destinations that just has everything, and staying at Cascade Wellness Resort made it all feel effortless.

Need to know

  • Bring comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking a lot, especially along the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade.

  • A light jacket is helpful. The ocean breeze can be cooler than expected, especially in the evenings.

  • Make dinner reservations ahead for places like Mare and Don Toro Angus Grill.

  • Try to balance active days with relaxing time at Cascade Wellness Resort. That’s really the magic of this trip.

  • Don’t skip the simple moments. Walking through Lagos at night and grabbing gelato ended up being some of our favorites.
