The Myst Dong Khoi: A Boutique Hotel Rooted in Saigon’s Shipyard Past

The Myst Dong Khoi is a 108-room boutique hotel in the heart of District 1, but it feels much more intimate and individual than its size suggests. The design draws inspiration from the nearby former Ba Son shipyard, incorporating salvaged and upcycled materials alongside Southern Vietnamese artifacts, local artwork, dark hardwood, concrete and abundant greenery. The lobby almost feels like a small art museum, and there are interesting details everywhere you look. Nothing feels cookie-cutter.

Rooty Rooftop Bar & Restaurant

I stayed in a Verdant Room, which continues the same design story in a more restrained way. My room was comfortable and characterful, although noticeably darker than the public spaces. The standout is the private outdoor Jacuzzi on the balcony—something you'll find in every room category at The Myst. Surrounded by greenery and the hotel's distinctive white ironwork, it gives the room an indoor-outdoor quality that feels particularly appropriate in tropical Saigon.

Some of my favorite parts of the hotel were outside the room. The rooftop pool sits among lush greenery overlooking the city, with a partial view toward the Saigon River, while Rooty Bar next door becomes a livelier spot in the evening. I was also pleasantly surprised by the complimentary afternoon tea at The Nest. It's quite substantial and accompanied by live music, and the restaurant team was particularly helpful accommodating vegetarian requests. A robust breakfast is also included.

The Myst is officially a five-star hotel, but I wouldn't choose it for someone looking for the polished uniformity of a large international luxury property. Its appeal is different: personality, local design and a hotel that feels connected to the city around it. For travelers who appreciate interesting boutique hotels and would rather have character than perfection, I think The Myst is a memorable way to experience Saigon.

• Location: The Myst is centrally located in District 1, making it a convenient base for exploring many of Saigon's major sights, restaurants and shopping.

• Rooms: There are 108 rooms across six categories, and every room has its own outdoor Jacuzzi tub. Select connecting rooms are available, making the hotel an option for families as well as couples.

• Included extras: Breakfast and a substantial daily afternoon tea with live music are complimentary for hotel guests, as are soft drinks in the in-room minibar.

• Pool & rooftop: The rooftop pool is surrounded by greenery and has city views with a partial view toward the Saigon River. Rooty Bar is also open to outside guests and gets lively in the evening.

• Spa: The full-service spa is located in a separate building immediately next to the hotel rather than internally connected to the guest rooms.

• Good to know: This is a hotel I'd recommend for its character, design and local personality rather than traditional five-star amenities and design. If you prefer boutique hotels that feel individual and a little unconventional, this may be a good fit for you.
