For this three-day stay in Auckland, Cordis provided the perfect base for exploring New Zealand’s largest city while still feeling like a destination in its own right. Located on the edge of Auckland’s central business district, the hotel offers easy access to neighborhoods such as Britomart, Ponsonby, Viaduct Harbour, and the Auckland Waterfront, while providing a peaceful retreat away from the busiest parts of downtown. The property features more than 600 rooms and suites, several dining venues, a renowned wellness offering, and one of the city’s most impressive rooftop leisure spaces.

Day one was all about settling in and enjoying the hotel itself. After checking in, I spent the afternoon at the rooftop pool deck, one of the highlights of the property. The heated rooftop swimming pool and spa pool create a resort-like atmosphere above the city, while the surrounding loungers make it easy to relax for several hours. Guests also have access to sauna and steam facilities through the wellness area, creating a surprisingly tranquil experience considering the central location.

The second day focused on wellness and dining. Chuan Spa is a standout feature of the hotel and offers a range of treatments inspired by traditional Chinese medicine and the five elements philosophy. After a massage, guests can enjoy the spa facilities, including the pool, spa pool, steam room, and wellness areas. Auckland locals frequently recommend Chuan Spa as one of the city’s best luxury spa experiences, particularly because of the added access to the pool and relaxation facilities.

Dining is another reason many travelers choose Cordis. Eight Restaurant has long been known for its extensive buffet concept, offering multiple live cooking stations and a wide variety of international cuisine. For a more relaxed evening, the hotel’s bars and lounges provide an excellent setting for cocktails and light bites. I would recommend booking dining reservations in advance, particularly on weekends and during school holidays, as the restaurant remains one of Auckland’s most popular hotel dining experiences.

On the third day, I used the hotel’s location to explore more of Auckland before returning for one final afternoon by the pool. The balance between city exploration and relaxation is what makes Cordis so appealing. Couples will appreciate the spa and dining experiences, while families benefit from the spacious rooms and leisure facilities. It’s equally suitable for a long weekend, a pre- or post-cruise stay, or travelers beginning a wider New Zealand itinerary.

My favorite aspect of the stay was how the hotel manages to feel both sophisticated and welcoming. Luxury hotels can sometimes feel formal, but Cordis strikes a balance between upscale amenities and genuine comfort. Between the rooftop pool, Chuan Spa, excellent dining, and convenient location, it offers one of the most complete hotel experiences in Auckland.

Need to know

  • Book Chuan Spa treatments in advance, especially for weekends, as appointments can fill quickly. Arriving early allows time to enjoy the wellness facilities before your treatment.

  • The heated rooftop pool is open daily and includes dedicated adults-only serenity periods, making it a great option for travelers seeking a quieter experience.

  • Allow at least one evening to enjoy the hotel's dining venues rather than heading out every night. The food offering is a major part of the Cordis experience.

  • While the hotel is walkable to many attractions, rideshare services and public transport are readily available for exploring further afield, including Waiheke Island ferries, Mission Bay, and Auckland's waterfront districts.

  • This hotel is particularly well suited to couples, luxury travelers, food lovers, spa enthusiasts, and anyone wanting a relaxing city break without sacrificing convenience.

  • If possible, request a higher-floor room or a room in the Pinnacle Tower for elevated city views and a more premium experience—room upgrades can be included if we book you through Fora.
