Waldorf Astoria Washington DC: Why This Is the Best-Located Luxury Hotel for Families
Curator’s statement

The Waldorf Astoria Washington DC is one of my favorite luxury hotels in the city because it is a historic former post office building that has been nicely refreshed with modern amenities. Conveniently located on Pennsylvania Avenue, it’s walkable to most of DC’s top attractions, from the National Mall to the Smithsonians—which is why I recommend this for families. I’ve toured and experienced the property firsthand, and it’s an easy recommendation for clients who want spacious, stylish accommodations right in the heart of the city.

Where to stay in Washington DC

The Waldorf Astoria sits in one of DC’s best locations right on Pennsylvania Avenue. Housed in the historic Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue, the property blends grand Beaux-Arts architecture with modern luxury.

Lobby and Peacock Alley

From a location standpoint, it’s hard to beat. The hotel is walkable to the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, the White House, CityCenterDC, and multiple Metro stops. It’s ideal for clients who want to explore the city on foot. The Waldorf Astoria Washington DC is within about three blocks of several Metro stations: Federal Triangle, which is directly across the street and serves the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines; Metro Center (a three- to five-minute walk) serving the Red, Blue, Orange, and Silver lines; and Archives‑Navy Memorial‑Penn Quarter (a short walk) on the Green and Yellow lines—all of which make accessing the wider Metro system very easy from the hotel.

The hotel has 263 guest rooms and suites, many of the largest in the city, with high ceilings, marble bathrooms, and thoughtful furnishings; some corner rooms feature sitting areas and bump outs (unobstructed views). Bathrooms are generously sized, suites offer separate living areas, and every room includes modern amenities like Nespresso machines, minibars, and well-appointed bedding.

Rooms feature a range of connecting options for families or groups traveling together. The following room categories work best for connecting stays: Premium King connecting to Premium 2 Queens; Grand Room with Two Queen Beds connecting to Deluxe King; One Bedroom Suite connecting to Deluxe Two Queens; Capitol One Bedroom Suite connecting to Deluxe King; the Waldorf Townhouse with two bedrooms; and the Presidential One Bedroom Suite connecting to a Deluxe King and Junior Suite with Two Queens for a three-bedroom option.

Deluxe King Room

I am rarely impressed, and I was staggered by the square footage and layout of the Waldorf Townhouse, a two-bedroom duplex located discreetly off the main lobby. Sitting above street level, it offers stairs, a spacious living and entertaining area, and a half bath with a butler pantry for discreet catering service. The setup also includes a private fitness area; clients can request a Peloton if desired. This setup is perfect for families, executive travelers, or clients who want private meeting space while taking advantage of hotel catering and amenities.

Public spaces like the lobby and Peacock Alley are open and welcoming, and the property regularly hosts dignitaries, VIPs, and celebrities, so you might even rub shoulders with someone special while enjoying a cocktail. The Waldorf updates its décor seasonally; during my springtime visit, the public spaces were styled for cherry blossom season!

Main lobby

The hotel also features a fitness center and spa downstairs, multiple dining options including Sushi Nakazawa (great omakase!), Jose Andres Meat (formerly Jose Andres Bazaar), Peacock Alley, valet and onsite parking (on a discreet side street entrance), and multiple event and meeting spaces.

Need to know

The hotel is well versed in hosting business guests who need discretion and security, which makes sense given its location near embassies and major government offices. They manage complex arrivals, privacy requests, and special logistics seamlessly, which makes me very comfortable recommending it for high-profile or sensitive travel.

Beyond business travelers, this property is also particularly well suited for families and groups.

Besides the connecting room options above, I recommend the Waldorf Townhouse Signature Suite. This is a two-story, 6,300-square-foot residence with its own private entrance, two king bedrooms, spa-style bathrooms, a large living and dining area, and a butler pantry for discreet service. Its layout makes it ideal for business meetings or families and groups who want spacious, communal areas while maintaining privacy. It is discreetly located off the main lobby area and is above eye level, so there are no worries about passersby peering in.
