The Balmoral in Edinburgh is special to me for both its timeless elegance and its unbeatable location right in the heart of the city on Princes Street. Sitting at the gateway to the Royal Mile with views of Edinburgh Castle, it perfectly blends historic charm with modern luxury. It’s a hotel that truly feels woven into the fabric of the city, making every stay feel distinctly and unmistakably Edinburgh. Walking out the front doors, you’re immediately surrounded by history, shopping, dining, and some of the most iconic sights in Scotland.

Welcome gift.
My daughter and I came to Scotland for a very special reason—so she could golf her way across some of the most legendary courses in the world. We chose to start our journey in Edinburgh, and staying at The Balmoral felt like the perfect introduction to Scotland. The location is truly unbeatable, right in the heart of the city, making it effortless to step outside and wander the Royal Mile, Princes Street, and the historic Old Town.

We loved starting our mornings with slow walks through town, grabbing coffee, popping into little shops, and simply soaking in the energy of this beautiful, storied city before heading out for the day. One afternoon, we enjoyed lunch at The Inn on the Mile and loved the classic Steak & Ale Pie—comforting, rich, and the perfect traditional Scottish bite.

One of the most unforgettable moments of our stay happened right in the city itself. During our time in Edinburgh, the Honours of Scotland were being presented to King Charles III in a ceremony held at St Giles’ Cathedral, officially known as the National Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication. By pure luck and perfect timing, we found ourselves just steps away from the King, Queen, Prince, and Princess as they arrived. Seeing them so close, in such a historic setting, was truly magical and something we will never forget.

Seeing His Royal Highness Prince William, Prince of Wales, and Her Royal Highness Catherine, Princess of Wales, just steps away from us in such a historic setting was truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
We also visited Edinburgh Castle, which towers above the city and feels like stepping straight into history. Just below the castle sits the Royal Yacht Britannia. It is often called the Queen’s Cruise—which we didn’t get a chance to tour this time, but it’s absolutely on the list for our next visit.

The spectacular view from my room.
Another highlight was taking a day trip out to Dalhousie Castle Falconry in Fife. Set on the grounds of a real medieval castle, the experience was absolutely incredible. We learned about the birds of prey, watched them soar across the countryside, and even had the chance to handle a falcon ourselves. Seeing my daughter light up during that experience is a memory I will always treasure. It was such a meaningful way to experience Scotland beyond the cities and golf courses, and it’s something I highly recommend for anyone who loves nature, history, or hands-on cultural experiences.

Back at The Balmoral, we made time for afternoon tea, and the setting alone was breathtaking—the elegant room, soft light, and quiet hum of the hotel made it feel like a true Scottish tradition brought to life. One evening, we walked from the hotel up toward High Street and along the Royal Mile, winding our way down the charming curves of Cockburn Street before enjoying dinner at Vittoria on the Bridge. That walk alone felt magical, with the city glowing around us.

After long days of exploring or traveling to golf courses, returning to The Balmoral’s warmth and comfort made all the difference. This hotel is ideal for couples, families with older children, and golf lovers using Edinburgh as a base. Whether you’re here for culture, golf, history, or your very first taste of Scotland, The Balmoral truly sets the tone for an unforgettable journey.

Need to know
Even in July, Edinburgh can be cool and breezy, so a sweater and a rain jacket are must-haves. You’ll be walking a lot on cobblestone streets, especially around the Royal Mile and Old Town, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. I also recommend booking restaurants, afternoon tea, and key tours in advance, as the city stays busy year-round. And don’t forget a small crossbody or backpack for daily exploring. It makes wandering the city so easy and enjoyable. No need to bring an umbrella the hotel provides them.
