Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit & Casa Velas: A True Mexican Oasis
Curator’s statement

Puerto Vallarta is a true gem—where old-world Mexican charm seamlessly meets the ease of a modern vacation experience. The destination feels deeply rooted in its culture, with each resort paying homage to the region’s heritage through design, cuisine, entertainment, and, most notably, its people. The warmth and pride of the staff bring the spirit of Puerto Vallarta to life in a way that feels both genuine and memorable. Set along the stunning Pacific Ocean and framed by the lush Sierra Madre mountains, the landscape is nothing short of breathtaking. Sunsets over the water, with the twinkling lights of town beginning to glow, create a sense of place that is both vibrant and serene. What sets this region apart is its authenticity. Unlike more heavily commercialized destinations in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta maintains a strong sense of identity—where culture, natural beauty, and a palpable joy for life intersect. It offers a more meaningful connection to Mexico, making it an exceptional recommendation for clients seeking both relaxation and a genuine cultural experience.

This FAM (Familiarization Trip) was exceptional from start to finish and provided a truly meaningful, in-depth look at the Velas portfolio and the Puerto Vallarta destination as a whole. The level of organization, thoughtfulness, and care throughout the itinerary made it both seamless and highly productive from an advisor perspective.

Nicky was outstanding—organized, present, and deeply invested in ensuring we had a comprehensive and memorable experience. Domenika and Gina were equally impressive and truly stood out as incredible hosts. Their hospitality, warmth, and genuine joy for both their work and their destination were evident in every interaction. That authenticity made a lasting impression and speaks volumes about the brand as a whole.

A true highlight was being part of the inaugural Cocina de Autor experience. It was incredibly special to witness—and share in—the pride and excitement of the team. Being able to bask in the genuine joy the staff demonstrated made the evening not only memorable, but deeply meaningful.

This was not only a well-executed FAM, but one that genuinely strengthened my confidence in and connection to these properties. It will absolutely influence my future recommendations, and I look forward to continuing to sell and support these destinations and the Velas brand.

Type: FAM trip

Casa Velas

One-line takeaway:
A boutique, adults-only all-inclusive that feels like a private retreat—ideal for couples and wellness-focused travelers seeking tranquility over beachfront access.

Casa Velas is a truly unique gem of a property. I had the pleasure of staying here during a recent FAM trip, and from the moment I arrived, the level of care from the staff was exceptional. I was welcomed with a delicious cocktail and even treated to a relaxing shoulder and head massage after a long travel day—an unforgettable first impression.

From the moment you walk in, the resort feels like a step back in time. Its historic Mexican charm creates an atmosphere of total relaxation, and the open layout is incredibly inviting. The lobby flows seamlessly into a large open-air patio overlooking a beautiful pool and bar area. While the resort is not beachfront, the setting is tranquil and feels like a hidden luxury retreat.

My room was lovely, featuring a large private soaking pool with views of the surrounding golf course. While some rooms could benefit from a refresh, everything was pristinely clean and thoughtfully maintained. The upper-level rooms I toured were especially impressive, offering spacious layouts ideal for couples traveling together or small groups.

The pool area is beautifully maintained, and cabanas are available to all guests without reservations—a great perk. Service at the pool was outstanding; once the staff learned your preferences; drinks would arrive almost as soon as you sat down. There are also shallow areas in the pool, perfect for cooling off comfortably during the heat of the day. While I didn’t personally try the poolside food, I consistently heard rave reviews about the burger.

Dining on property is centered around one à la carte restaurant, which exceeded expectations. I had one of my favorite meals of the trip here at breakfast. The menu is extensive, offering everything from American classics to traditional Mexican dishes, as well as lighter options like granola and pastries. The fruit was incredibly fresh, and the made-to-order cappuccinos were a highlight.

For those interested in wellness, the resort offers thoughtful activities such as yoga and a weekly wellness journey, adding to the peaceful, restorative atmosphere.

One of the standout features of Casa Velas is access to the Tao Beach Club. Although located off-site, it’s absolutely worth the visit. The setting is stunning, with views overlooking Puerto Vallarta and mountains lining the coastline. Guests can enjoy this beach club throughout their stay, and the experience feels like a private oasis. The restaurant features themed menus each night, and the salmon I had there was among the best I’ve ever had. The service is attentive and truly elevates the experience.

Casa Velas does have a quieter, more laid-back atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for couples seeking true rest and relaxation, older travelers, mother-daughter trips, or a low-key girls’ getaway—especially for those who enjoy golf. However, it’s not the right fit for travelers looking for nightlife or a high-energy environment.

With planned renovations over the next year, this already charming property is poised to become an even more spectacular destination.

I highly recommend Casa Velas for clients seeking a peaceful, intimate, and refined escape.

Best for:

  • Couples and honeymooners

  • Golf enthusiasts

  • Wellness-focused travelers

  • Mother-daughter trips or low-key girls’ getaways

  • Clients seeking privacy and personalized service

Not ideal for:

  • Clients looking for nightlife or a social scene

  • Travelers who want to be directly on the beach

  • Guests seeking a high-energy, activity-heavy resort

Advisor notes/recommendations:
Casa Velas is best positioned as a tranquil, boutique alternative to larger all-inclusives. It excels in service, privacy, and overall atmosphere. With renovations planned, it’s a strong option to keep top-of-mind for clients prioritizing relaxation and a more intimate experience over direct beachfront location.

Property: Velas Vallarta

Visit type: FAM Visit (site inspection only—did not stay overnight)

Velas Vallarta

While I did not personally stay at Velas Vallarta, I had the opportunity to visit this property during our FAM trip. Overall, it is a beautiful, well-established resort that is particularly well-suited for families traveling with younger children.

The arrival experience felt somewhat disorganized, with initial confusion around luggage handling that made the entrance feel a bit chaotic. Once inside, however, the space opens into a grand lobby with an impressive high-domed ceiling. A small creperie adds a charming touch, and there is ample seating for evening entertainment. That said, the furnishings feel dated and do not fully align with a luxury positioning. The property does show its age on first impression—but this quickly shifts as you move beyond the lobby.

The true highlight of the resort is found in its grounds. Guests are welcomed into a lush, garden-like oasis filled with tropical greenery, koi ponds, and abundant wildlife. Winding pathways and small bridges connect different areas of the property, creating a serene and immersive environment. Multiple pools are thoughtfully spread throughout, allowing guests to explore and settle into different spaces.

Accommodations are a defining feature here, especially for families. Every room category includes either a kitchenette or a full kitchen. While entry-level rooms are more compact and noticeably dated, even the next category up offers a significant upgrade in both space and overall comfort. Full kitchens with standard-sized appliances, dining tables, and living areas make this an excellent option for guests with dietary restrictions or families who prefer the flexibility of in-room dining. The addition of 24-hour room service further enhances convenience, particularly for those traveling with young children. A small on-site convenience store also allows guests to purchase groceries and essentials.

Dining includes two main restaurants, along with additional casual options around the pool. The beachfront restaurant offers a strong à la carte menu with flavorful local dishes, while a buffet provides a wide variety of options suited to different palates. A more formal dinner restaurant is also available in the evenings. Beverage offerings, including cocktails and wine, are plentiful and enjoyable.

The beachfront location is a major highlight, offering beautiful ocean views and a picturesque setting. The resort embraces its cultural roots and incorporates celebratory moments on the beach, adding a meaningful and memorable layer to the guest experience.

This is, at its core, a very family-forward property. During my visit, there was a strong presence of children throughout. While there is a dedicated pool area for younger guests, it can feel busy and somewhat detracts from a more elevated or tranquil atmosphere. The kids club is spacious but would benefit from some updates.

I would recommend this property primarily for families, particularly those with younger children. For the best experience, I strongly suggest booking above the entry-level room category to ensure more space and a more updated feel.

Best for:

  • Families with young children

  • Multigenerational travel

  • Clients who value space and in-room kitchen facilities

  • Travelers with dietary restrictions or preferences for in-room dining

  • Clients seeking a relaxed, activity-filled beachfront stay

Not ideal for:

  • Couples seeking a romantic or quiet atmosphere

  • Luxury-focused clients expecting modern design and elevated finishes

  • Travelers who prioritize high-end dining experiences

  • Clients looking for a boutique or adults-only feel

Advisor notes/recommendations:
Velas Vallarta is best suited for families, particularly those with younger children who will benefit from the spacious room layouts and kitchen amenities. I would strongly recommend booking above the entry-level room category to ensure a more comfortable and updated experience. Clients seeking a quieter, more luxury-forward atmosphere may want to consider alternative properties.

Property: Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit

Visit type: FAM visit

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit

One-line takeaway:
A polished, beachfront all-inclusive with standout dining and spacious suites—best for families and multi-generational travel, less ideal for couples seeking nightlife or a spa-centric stay.

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is a spectacular property that delivers a refined and memorable all-inclusive experience. I recently had the opportunity to visit on a FAM trip, and from the moment I arrived, the resort made a strong impression.

Guests are welcomed into a large open-air foyer that strikes a thoughtful balance between modern design and traditional Mexican elegance. As you continue through the space, it opens onto a sweeping veranda with stunning ocean views framed by lush greenery. The arrival experience is seamless and elevated—a welcome margarita and brief shoulder massage provide a relaxing start, and check-in is handled efficiently within minutes. My luggage arrived almost immediately after I did, a small but telling detail of the service level here.

Grand Velas pool views

The suite itself was beautifully appointed—spacious, impeccably clean, and designed with an open layout that included a comfortable living and dining area. The true standout, however, was the expansive private terrace. With unobstructed ocean views and ample space for lounging or entertaining, it quickly became my favorite part of the room. Thoughtful in-room amenities, including a bottle of Grand Velas mezcal and a small bottle of wine to take home, added a personalized touch.

The resort grounds are equally impressive. Open walkways allow guests to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty and coastal climate while still feeling immersed in a luxurious setting. Details like the koi ponds add a sense of tranquility and care to the overall design.

Dining is a major highlight of the property. With five distinct restaurants, each offering its own cuisine and ambiance, the variety and quality are exceptional for an all-inclusive resort. The Michelin-influenced dining experiences are particularly noteworthy and elevate the culinary program beyond expectations. I had the opportunity to attend the inaugural Cocina de Autor event, which was a standout—creative, beautifully executed, and a must for guests who appreciate innovative cuisine.

For breakfast, I primarily visited the buffet, which offered a solid selection of both American and Mexican options. While there were many pre-prepared choices, the made-to-order breakfast tacos in the center of the buffet were the clear highlight. Poolside dining was another strong point, with fresh ceviches and guacamole that were consistently excellent. Dinner at Lucca was also enjoyable, with well-executed pasta dishes.

One area that fell short, however, was the cocktail program. Drinks at the pool often felt unbalanced—either overly sweet or too strong—and did not reflect the same level of quality found in the food offerings.

The spa experience was also disappointing. I participated in the hydrotherapy ritual, which felt overly rigid and lacked flexibility for guest preferences. Despite expressing discomfort with certain elements, I was encouraged to complete the full sequence, including a cold plunge I had hoped to skip. There were also cleanliness concerns during the experience, as well as an issue with allergy accommodation despite prior notice. While management addressed the situation and apologized, it was not in line with the otherwise high standards of the resort.

In terms of atmosphere, the property leans quiet and relaxed. While there is a bar open later in the evening with a solid wine selection, the overall energy is subdued. This makes it less suitable for honeymooners seeking a romantic, lively ambiance or guests looking for nightlife. Instead, the resort truly excels as a destination for families and multi-generational travel. The kids club and family-friendly amenities are thoughtfully designed, with dedicated activities and even spa offerings tailored for children.

Overall, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is a beautiful and well-executed resort that shines in its accommodations, service, and especially its dining program. While there are areas for improvement—most notably the spa and cocktail consistency—it remains a strong choice for families or groups seeking a luxurious, low-stress all-inclusive experience.

Best for:

  • Families with young children

  • Multi-generational travel

  • Clients seeking a luxury all-inclusive with exceptional dining

  • Travelers who value spacious accommodations and seamless service

  • Clients looking for a relaxed, low-key atmosphere

Not ideal for:

  • Honeymooners seeking a romantic or adults-only feel

  • Clients prioritizing nightlife or a high-energy scene

  • Spa-focused travelers

Advisor notes/recommendations:
Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is a strong choice for clients seeking a refined, stress-free all-inclusive experience with standout dining and generous accommodations. It is particularly well-suited for families and multi-gen groups. I would recommend a 4–5 night stay to fully enjoy the property’s offerings.

Need to know

Puerto Vallarta is an ideal destination for families and multi-generational travelers, offering a perfect balance of culture, activity, and ease. Beyond the resorts, the town itself is vibrant and full of life, with countless opportunities to explore—from local markets and art galleries to authentic dining and cultural experiences.

What truly sets this region apart is how deeply it embodies Mexican culture while still feeling approachable and welcoming. There is a genuine sense of warmth throughout the destination, and it consistently feels safe and comfortable to explore.

Another key advantage is the climate. Compared to destinations like Cancún and Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta tends to have milder, more moderate weather, making it an appealing option across a wider range of travel months, including periods that overlap with hurricane season elsewhere.

For clients seeking a more relaxed, authentic experience—one that blends natural beauty, culture, and a slower pace—Puerto Vallarta is an exceptional alternative to Mexico’s more heavily commercialized beach destinations.
