Based in Charleston, Monique Hill has used her experience as a consultant in public health to inform her approach to travel advising. In the ever-changing medical landscape, she has needed to be flexible and stay current. But the one trait that has served her best is her insatiable curiosity.

A lifelong learner, Monique challenges herself to tackle something new each day, which certainly translated well when she added Fora Advisor to her resume. We sat down with Monique to learn about how she built a successful travel business, what destinations she likes best and which areas of expertise she’s leaning into for 2025.

How did you get started with Fora?

In June 2023, I planned a fabulous birthday weekend in NYC. It was luxurious and included one of the best hotels in the city and all the indulgent things you’d imagine. As amazing as the experience was, I realized that I also enjoyed curating it.

I had seen more than a few social media ads for Fora and specifically the words "modern travel agency" stood out to me. I submitted my application and I was approved maybe a few days later. Although I was slow to take action, I finally launched my business in September, after spending a month learning the basics of being a travel advisor through Fora training and general research.

Why is travel advising a good fit for your skill set

Before starting my Fora business, I had launched a women’s empowerment and education networking platform. My focus was creating events and opportunities that were upscale and made every woman feel pampered and beautiful. My attention to detail in the planning never went unnoticed, so I knew I could transfer that same mindset and skill set into my new business.

My career in social work/public health also prepared me for the travel industry. These are fields that rely on relationships and partnerships. So I know a thing or two about building both, which are skills that are essential for travel advisors.

I have traveled extensively on a corporate level, so every travel woe to be had, I’ve had. I also planned meetings and events, so I had previous experience in group block management and hotel contracts. In my leisure travel, I was always the planner, whether it was a solo trip or a friends’ trip. I would find ways to elevate stays or experiences without being cost-prohibitive.

These experiences and skills allowed me to break into the travel industry and see success quickly.

What is the most challenging part of running your own travel business?

If I think about this question about a year ago and also currently, my answers differ. In my first six months, my biggest challenge was a lack of confidence and organization. I was so nervous about making every client happy that I would obsess every time a client departed for travel. It took me a while to build up planning confidence, but we got through it.

Now, I check in with the hotel or resort after night one to see if the client’s stay is going well. It gives me peace of mind that the hotel will check in and course correct if needed, and it lets the customers know that they matter. As for current challenges, my biggest is time management. I’ve found that I spend full-time effort on my business, and a lot of it is on tasks that have to happen but could be better serviced by an assistant. My ultimate goal is to make sure my time is spent perfecting my client’s trip and communication. It’s about time I look for an assistant to support the tasks that take a lot of time. Such a great problem to have.

What resources have helped you grow your business and client base?

The primary resources and tools that have helped me grow my business are Fora’s training, templates and resources, and the amazing community and leadership that Fora offers. My daily schedule will always consist of training, office hours and a scroll in our online Forum to see what’s new.

Other resources and tools that have contributed to my growth are in-person supplier training, TravelJoy for client management and social media. My business is about 90% social media and 10% referrals and Fora leads.

Do you have a travel specialty?

My travel specialty is romance and groups. I love proposals, weddings,  honeymoons, babymoons, bachelorette trips, and vow renewals. My destination specialties are Southern Italy and all of the Caribbean. I plan a lot of honeymoons and romantic couple’s trips, which are frequently to the Caribbean or Amalfi Coast.

Tell us about Italy.

Southern Italy is destined for lovers. This region offers a blend of picturesque landscapes and views, rich history and delicious cuisine. Either you arrive in love, or you fall in love there. It is one of my favorite places to plan romantic trips.  My favorites are Ravello, Ischia, and Capri.

What are your go-to activities in Italy?

Ravello is a great place to start the vacation. It is more of a tranquil start to any trip after a long flight. It is filled with stunning gardens, some amazing luxury hotels and spectacular views. It's the perfect arrival place, so dinner and a nice stroll are all that’s needed before heading to your next stop.

From Ravello, the next stop will be Casa Angelina, located in Praiano. Casa Angelina is one of my favorite luxury boutique hotels perched on the cliffs along the Amalfi Coast. It is romantic and has everything from a rooftop restaurant, a spa, amazing views of the Amalfi Coast and access to the most exclusive beach club.

From Praiano, the next stop is Capri, a bucket-list destination. This is where you can enjoy upscale shopping, scenic hikes, boat tours, nightlife and luxurious beach clubs. It is as dreamy as one could imagine.

The final stop on this romantic getaway is Ischia. Ischia is another island off of the coast and offers relaxing vibes. After the Capri energy, you’ll appreciate it. The views are immaculate, thermal spas are a must-indulge, and the lush botanical gardens are so romantic.

What about nightlife?

Africana Famous Club (Praiano): One of the most iconic nightclubs on the Amalfi Coast. It is built inside a cave with floor-to-ceiling windows that make for an amazing view.

Taverna Anema e Core (Capri): A celebrity favorite, this nightclub is one of the hottest spots on Capri.

Bagni d’Arienzo (Positano): Not so much nightlife, but Bagni d’Arienzo is the beach club with all the vibes. So if you want to relax by the beach, but want to enjoy music also, this is the place.

Any favorite restaurants?

As cliche as this may sound, there is no bad food in southern Italy.  But if I have to choose, here are a few spots:

  • Caffè d’Autore (Ravello) for simple, yet delicious Italian food.

  • Il Flauto di Pan (Ravello) for a more romantic and upscale vibe. This is a Michelin-starred restaurant, so you won’t be disappointed.

  • II Riccio (Capri; Jumeirah Capri Palace) is known for its seafood and Mediterranean cuisine and has the most amazing views.

  • Ristorante Pizzeria Aurora (Capri) for pizza. Very cozy, so you know it will feel and taste like you’re visiting Italian friends or family.

What hotels do you recommend in southern Italy?

Fora has some iconic partners in Italy, so there are many amazing luxury and boutique properties. Here are some of my top picks.

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast is an iconic luxury property in a great location. Plenty of amenities and dining options if you want to stay in and enjoy the property.

  • Fora's Bellini Club partner perks include a resort credit, daily breakfast and an upgrade whenever possible.

Casa Angelina is the honeymoon hotel. It’s going to set the tone of romance every stay. The property is also in a great location, has amazing views and offers private beach club access.

  • Fora Reserve perks include a $100 hotel credit, daily breakfast, an upgrade and extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Hotel La Palma Capri is Capri’s original hotel and is still one of the best and highly sought-after. The vibe feels secluded, but it’s located near all the happenings. Be sure to request a quiet room if you like to turn it in early.

  • Fora's Pearl Partner perks include a resort credit, daily breakfast and access to a courtesy car.

Excelsior Belvedere Hotel & Spa is a five-star luxury property centrally located on the island of Ischia. It has it all, including a spa, beach club, great restaurants and shuttle service.
