Advisor - An Afternoon in Fremont: Quirky Sights & Local Flavor in Seattle
Curator’s statement

Have you done the usual Seattle tourist activities, but you’re longing for something with a more local vibe? You need to check out the quirky neighborhood of Fremont! Just a short bus ride away from downtown, but its artsy vibe makes it feel worlds away from observation towers and flying fish. Here are my suggestions for a fun afternoon exploring Fremont.

Things to do in Fremont

Explore fun, colorful architecture in Fremont.

Visit the troll

Yes, indeed—there is a giant troll sculpture, built in 1990, underneath the bridge in Fremont! Get your picture taken alongside this whimsical piece of public art.

Explore the artsy shops

In Fremont, you won’t find the typical touristy stores. Instead, browse vinyl record stores such as Jive Times Records, pick up some eco-friendly vintage clothing at Show Pony, get inspired to garden at the Indoor Sun Shoppe, and more!

Fremont Sunday Market

If you’re in the neighborhood on a weekend, the Fremont Sunday Market is an institution. This large community event takes place every Sunday from 10 am–4 pm, rain or shine. Pick up some jewelry or art from a local vendor as a truly unique souvenir!

Discover Fremont’s offbeat sculptures

As the self-proclaimed “Center of the Universe” since the 1970’s, Fremont has a large rocket positioned in the center of the neighborhood—right next to a model of Saturn. Just a few blocks away is the newer “Waiting for the Interurban” in front of a bus stop.

Wander Gas Works Park

About a mile walk from the heart of Fremont is Gas Works Park—a unique green space built around the ruins of a former gasification plant. The old machinery with the backdrop of the Seattle skyline makes for great photography. Also, since this park is on the north shore of Lake Union, you’ll get some of the best views of the city from here.

Places to eat & drink in Fremont

Cozy up with a warm drink in Fremont Coffee Co.

  • Cafe Turko: This gem is just down the street from the troll, and serves delicious dishes from all around Turkiye. They offer food for all dietary needs (including vegan and gluten-free), all full of flavor. Be sure to try the muhammara appetizer—my favorite!

  • Joule: Looking for something a little fancier? Joule is a local Korean-steakhouse fusion, great for a more elevated evening. Enjoy a juicy short rib steak alongside some kimchi and black garlic noodles.

  • Pel Meni Dumpling Tzar: For a fun vibe, share a plate of dumplings from Pel Meni as a mid-day snack. These delightful Russian treats are flavored with herbs and spices, as well as a choice of sauces, and can be purchased as either beef or potato.

  • Fremont Coffee Company: For a cozy vibe, join the locals and grab a pastry and a cappuccino from Fremont Coffee, housed in a historic building. Their cookies are to die for!

  • Fremont Brewing: A great place to try a local microbrew! When the weather’s nice, the outdoor seating is a great place to hang out with friends. If you don’t drink alcohol, there is a wide selection of non-alcoholic varieties.

  • Fainting Goat Gelato: To top off your afternoon, try some house-made gelato! Try their unique flavors like sour cherry swirl and rice pudding! We love bringing friends here for the fun vibe.

Need to know

Pro tip: Parking can be a challenge in this popular neighborhood. There are city-run and private lots for a fee, but if you’re lucky and are willing to walk a few blocks, you may find free street parking. Be sure to follow the parking times on the signs to avoid a costly surprise!

If you don’t have a car, there are several buses that will take you north to Fremont in 25–35 minutes.
