Advisor - The Best Way to Spend a Day in Naoshima, Japan
Curator’s statement

Naoshima is one of Japan’s most unique destinations—a quiet art island where contemporary museums and installations blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. It makes for the perfect day trip, especially on a first or second visit to Japan when much of your itinerary may revolve around busy city exploration. Spend the day biking through coastal villages, discovering world-class art, and taking in the island’s peaceful atmosphere.

Things to do in Naoshima

Chichu Art Museum

  • Spend the morning at the Chichu Art Museum, taking in both the exhibits and the serene concrete architecture designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

  • Bike around the island and snap photos of Yayoi Kusama’s iconic pumpkin installations.

  • Wander through the Art House Project, discovering spaces like Kinza, Go’o Shrine, Kadoya, and other art-filled reinterpretations of traditional homes.

  • Step into the immersive Minamidera installation, an unforgettable sensory experience exploring light, darkness, and perception.

  • Refuel with delicious sweet or savory crepes from Sarrasin or enjoy a relaxed lunch at the cafe in Benesse House Museum.

Places to eat & drink in Naoshima

Yayoi Kusama's Yellow Pumpkin

Try Toshi for Japanese cuisine and Sarrasin for excellent crepes. Benesse House Museum cafe is a great option for lunch. Chichu Art Museum cafe is a good choice for a quick biute of coffee and pastries.

Wander for Japanese curries and find a hidden gem of your own. I recommend 7-Eleven for snacks.

Need to know

Don’t cancel your plans if it’s raining! Naoshima takes on a beautifully moody atmosphere in wet weather. While biking may be less appealing, the island’s shuttle buses are reliable and make it easy to explore comfortably.
