Things to do in New Orleans

The Italian mausoleum of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Brunch & antiques

Start the day with a classic New Orleans brunch at Brennan’s, where the elegant courtyard and Wine Spectator recognized wine list set the tone. Afterward, stroll along Royal Street for antique shopping and art galleries. Don’t miss Moss Antiques, a fifth-generation family shop with treasures like oyster platters and vintage barware.

Cemetery tours

Spend an afternoon at St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, where the city’s history is told through its tombs. Family mausoleums, society plots, and even the grandparents of Pope Leo are interred here. Guided tours are required (open access was closed in 1969 after film crews left the cemetery in disarray), and knowledgeable guides bring the city’s layered history to life. Night tours are also offered on Saturday evenings for an added haunted element.

Hire a parade!

One of New Orleans’ most joyful traditions is the second line parade—a brass band leading guests through the streets in a swirl of music, dancing, and celebration. We stumbled upon one outside Galatoire’s and were reminded that visitors can hire a band to create this experience for themselves. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or simply the joy of being in New Orleans, joining your own parade is a memory you’ll never forget.

Places to eat & drink in New Orleans

Cocktails and caviar at Jewel of the South

  • Bacchanal: A backyard wine party with live music and Mediterranean small plates. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but worth the trek.

  • Jewel of the South: One of the World’s 50 Best Bars and a James Beard winner, this quirky cocktail bar lured us in with a sign that read “cocktails and caviar.” Located near St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, it’s perfect for a post-tour snack and drink.

  • Brennan’s: Since 1946, this Creole institution has been a must. Known for its bananas foster, deep wine list, and private dining spaces, Brennan’s is quintessential New Orleans.

  • Galatoire’s: Book a Friday lunch in the main dining room for a true New Orleans tradition—jackets required, and ladies should be dressed to the nines. There’s champagne flowing, and soufflé potatoes with béarnaise are a must. No reservation? Head next door to the bar, where the same menu is served in a more casual setting.

  • Mamou: A romantic French restaurant with a famed sommelier who has curated a spectacular wine list accompanied by a beautifully inventive menu. Recognized by Bon Appétit and Wine Enthusiast, it hits the high notes with dishes like côte de boeuf and the best potatoes I’ve ever had in my life.

  • St. James Cheese Company: A casual gem for lunch, with soups, sandwiches, and a cheese case worth lingering over. Perfect for grabbing provisions to enjoy later with wine. Ask for a baguette to take with you to experience the joie de vivre of walking like a Parisian.

Need to know

For me, what makes New Orleans unforgettable isn’t just the food, the music, or even the history—it’s how those things come together through the city’s spirit of hospitality. This city celebrates life! Each trip holds a surprise, from stumbling onto a second line parade to discovering a new favorite bar tucked off Royal Street. In the true spirit of the city, you leave wanting to plan your next trip, visiting your favorites and discovering new ones.
