Advisor - The Garden Isle Getaway: Kaua’i, Hawai’i
Curator’s statement

I love Hawai'i, and even though I’m not usually someone who revisits the same destination, I would return in a heartbeat—especially to Kaua'i. We chose it for our honeymoon, and I still wish we had spent more time there. The people are incredible, the views are absolutely unreal, and the hikes and activities are endlessly fun. Add in amazing food and unbeatable vibes, and it’s hard to imagine a better place. Kaua'i truly has something for everyone: if you’re looking to relax, you’ll find stunning beaches and beautiful hotels perfect for unwinding. And if adventure is more your style, buckle up—there’s no shortage of unforgettable experiences waiting for you.

Things to do

Waimea Canyon Viewpoint

Tube through tunnels

At Kauai Backcountry Adventures, you’ll tube through historic, hand-dug tunnels and flumes—an absolute blast. Be prepared to get wet, and don’t worry if the dark makes you a little nervous! You’ll suit up with water shoes and a headlamp before floating down the mountain. Truly a 10/10 experience.

Take a sunset cruise

Join Holo Holo Charters for a sunset cruise along the breathtaking NaʻPali Coast. These dramatic views can only be seen by boat, helicopter, or an intense hike. If you’re lucky, you may spot whales, dolphins, and other marine life along the way.

Backpack the NaʻPali Coast

For those craving a true adventure, backpacking the NaʻPali Coast is unforgettable. Trips can range from a quick two-day, one-night trek to a full six-day journey. Expect challenging terrain—but also some of the most stunning scenery you’ll ever see.

Fly high

Take to the skies on a helicopter tour over the NaʻPali Coast. This is one of the best ways to fully appreciate the emerald cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys that define Kauai.

Gear up

Grab some snorkeling gear and explore Kauai’s vibrant underwater world. Secret Beach, Hideaways Beach, and Anini Beach are all excellent spots to dive in.

Go for a hike

Not into backpacking? Same here—but Kauai has plenty of incredible day hikes. The Sleeping Giant Trail is a personal favorite, and Wailua Homesteads Park and Koke’e State Park are other great options.

Take a scenic drive

Drive through Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Be sure to stop at the lookout points and check out the Red Dirt Waterfall. There are also plenty of fantastic hiking opportunities in the area.

Kayak or paddleboard

Head to the Hanalei River for a peaceful kayak or paddleboard ride surrounded by lush scenery and mountain views.

Stroll through Poipu

Wander through Poipu Shopping Village for some casual shopping, local browsing, and possibly a surprise hula performance.

Places to eat & drink

Huli huli chicken at Konohiki Seafood

  • Java Kai: An adorable coffee shop right along the main road, serving excellent coffee and tasty breakfast bites. A perfect stop to start your day.

  • North Shore Bowls: Craving something refreshing and sweet for breakfast? This is the spot. Their acai bowls are fresh, flavorful, and hit the spot every time.

  • Nourish: A great choice for a quick breakfast or an easy, healthy lunch—with unbeatable views overlooking the Hanalei Valley.

  • The Hanalei Dolphin: A must-visit for sushi lovers, especially if you enjoy dining with a peaceful view of the Hanalei River.

  • Tidepools: Located inside the Hyatt, Tidepools delivers major tiki-hut vibes. Enjoy delicious seafood and steaks while feeling like you’re floating above the water. Don’t miss the koi ponds you’ll pass on your way in—it’s all part of the experience.

  • Beach House Restaurant: Come for the food, stay for the sunset. This is one of the best spots on the island to watch the sun dip below the horizon—and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a sunset wedding.

  • Tahiti Nui: A laid-back local favorite serving everything from breakfast to dinner. Expect a fun bar atmosphere, live music most nights, and classic island vibes.

  • Konohiki Seafood: A fast-casual Hawaiian spot with a strong focus on fresh seafood and poke. I ordered the huli huli chicken and it was absolutely delicious—and honestly, everything we tried here was a hit.

Need to know

I highly recommend renting a car when visiting Kaua’i. The island is fairly spread out, and having a car allows you to truly experience and explore as much of it as possible.

I also suggest splitting your stay between the North Shore and the South Shore, depending on the activities you plan to do. Traveling from one side of the island to the other can take a significant amount of time, so dividing your time based on your itinerary will save you hours of driving. We stayed on the East Shore to balance out the drive times, but in hindsight, I wish we had stayed in two different locations so we could fully immerse ourselves in each area.
