Advisor - Experience Rome Like a Local: Aperitivo Favorites & Hotel Tips From an Insider
Curator’s statement

Rome is my home away from home, and for a person like myself who is passionate about wine and cocktails, the Italian aperitivo ritual was a treat to discover. I love how a spontaneous or planned aperivito—great food, local people, and relaxed, unhurried experiences that feel authentic, are brought together. Over the years, I’ve explored beyond the typical highlights and discovered the little streets, bars, and corners where Romans gather, creating memories that aren’t manufactured. Helping travelers find these genuine experiences and enjoy the city like a local is what makes planning trips to Rome so rewarding for me.

Things to do in Rome

The Isola Tiberius with the hospital on it and the Jewish Museum/Synagogue on the left hand side.

Wander local Roman neighborhood streets: Instead of sticking to main sights, I love getting lost in neighborhoods like Trastevere, Monti, and parts of Campo de’ Fiori, where you can watch daily Roman life unfold. This is where locals shop for groceries, sit down for long lunches, and gather for aperitivo in the early evening—it’s the easiest way to experience Rome beyond the highlights.

Explore beyond Piazza Navona: Piazza Navona itself is iconic but busy and touristy (let us be honest). The real magic starts just behind it. Take a short walk into the surrounding streets toward Via del Governo Vecchio and Via di Tor Millina, where you’ll find independent boutiques, casual wine bars, and excellent pizza al taglio spots that locals actually frequent.

Visit Rome’s oldest surviving temples: Near the Tiber River, the Tempio di Portuno and Tempio di Ercole Vincitore offer a glimpse into Rome’s ancient past, far from the crowds of the Forum. Their setting near the water makes this area especially atmospheric, particularly in the late afternoon.

Cross onto Isola Tiberina: Walk across one of the small bridges onto Isola Tiberina, one of Rome’s most charming and overlooked corners. Step inside the Church of San Giovanni Calibita, a peaceful and intimate space that feels worlds away from the busy city—and one that holds personal memories for me as well. This is where the wedding took place of two of my dear friends.

Discover Bernini’s Elephant (Pulcino della Minerva): Bernini’s charming elephant statue, located in Piazza della Minerva, is still my favorite sculpture in Rome. Standing in front of the beautifully restored Hotel Minerva and the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, it’s a small stop with a surprisingly playful story—especially once you learn why the elephant is positioned the way it is.

Places to eat & drink in Rome

Enjoying a special spritz at Salotto 42 in front of the Temple of Hadrian.

Chakra Café: My to-go spot for years! A relaxed, local favorite with an unpretentious atmosphere and a thoughtfully curated selection of wines, craft beers, and cocktails. It’s an easy, low-key spot for aperitivo if you want to blend in with locals rather than sit somewhere flashy.

Salotto 42: Known for its excellent cocktails, Salotto 42 is even more special if you are able to grab a seat outside. Here you can enjoy your drink and snacks with a direct view of the Temple of Hadrian. This place is special to me because I used to visit it often with my American best friend who unfortunately had to move back to the states :( Good memories though!

47 Circus Roof Garden: Located atop of 47 Boutique Hotel Rome, this rooftop bar and restaurant offers one of the most unique aperitivo settings in the city, with views overlooking the Tempio di Portuno and Tempio di Ercole Vincitore. Both the drinks and food are standout—if available, opt for the chef’s tasting menu for a creative and surprising experience. It is here that we spent my boyfriend’s 40th, and the whole setting just added a special touch for a special birthday!

Blackmarket Hall: Set in a beautifully designed, old-fashioned space, Blackmarket Hall offers a more curated aperitivo experience. Guests can choose between fish, meat, or vegetarian aperitivo options, all paired with inventive, well-crafted cocktails that feel anything but ordinary.

Spritzeria Monti Rooftop: A lively rooftop tucked inside a hotel in the Monti neighborhood, best known for its wide range of spritz variations and generous aperitivo bites. A fun and relaxed option if you want something casual, social, and very Roman. I visit this option when I have friends coming over from outside Italy, as a real threat, but reservations are a must!

Need to know

Travelers should know that Rome offers so much beyond the main attractions! Don’t forget to try local cuisine and always ask for the dish or dishes of the day. Visit small, family-run restaurants (called Ostaria’s or Trattoria’s), because these often have the most authentic flavors, sometimes nonna (grandma) is still in the kitchen. Also, carry a reusable water bottle, because Rome has so many water fountains, called Nasoni that have the coldest, freshest water in them, for free!
