Advisor - From Hawker Stalls to Sky Gardens: Finding Magic in Singapore
Curator’s statement

Singapore is a modern marvel of a city, which balances modern infrastructure and innovation with nature better than just about any other city on the planet. Filled with lush, green gardens in the midst of the cityscape, Singapore is one of the most jaw-dropping and beautiful cities in the world. The harmony of the blend of cultures in this city adds additional layers to what makes this city so special, and the entire time I was there I just kept thinking, “Okay, so when am I coming back?” Whether you’re simply there on a layover or have a few days to spend in the city, you’re sure to have an amazing time.

Things to do in Singapore

Can you believe this is in an airport? I’m still stunned by it.

Gardens by the Bay

One of the most iconic areas of the city is the Gardens by the Bay—home to Supertrees that serve as vertical gardens housing over 160,000 plants breathing oxygen into the city, and the tallest tree is 16 stories high. While there are several gardens and areas worth visiting, the Supertrees are the most iconic.

Marina Bay Sands

If you want the most sought-after views in the city, head to the SkyPark Observation Deck—open to the public on floor 56. The Sands SkyPark on level 57, where the infinity pool is located, is reserved exclusively for hotel guests.

Changi Airport

Consistently ranked as the top airport in the world, it sounds crazy to rank time at the airport as a top attraction in the city—and yet, it is genuinely one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. Visit The Jewel, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, surrounded by lush gardens. Catch a movie at the theater, visit the Butterfly Garden, or take a dip in the rooftop pool—whatever experience you’re looking for, it is likely available at the Changi Airport.

Sentosa Island

Just a 15 minute boat ride from Central Singapore, head to Sentosa Island for a scenic drive, gorgeous beaches, and one of the world’s biggest oceanariums. Sentosa Island is also home to Universal Studios Singapore, as well as Adventure Cove Waterpark—the perfect location for a family vacation.

Shop on Orchard Road

For a luxury shopping and dining experience, make your way to Orchard Road for an afternoon. You’ll find a wide array of entertainment and dining options as well.

Peruse China Town, Little India & Kampong Glam

One of the best things about Singapore is its diverse blend and influence of cultures, and there’s no better way to explore them than to visit these districts.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The first and only tropical botanic garden on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Singapore Botanic Gardens are a must-see, and houses the largest orchid collection in the world—over 1,200 species and 2,000 hybrids!

Places to eat & drink in Singapore

The Hainanese chicken rice I got from a hawker stall might be the single best meal I’ve ever eaten.

  • Hawker Stalls: Singapore is famous for its Hawker Stalls, and rightfully so—while it is street food, several of these stalls offer world-class dishes and have received Michelin stars.

  • Clarke Quay: Not a restaurant, but rather an area, Clarke Quay is known for its bustling nightlife and wide array of bars and restaurants. Located on the river, it is a very touristy area, but it is beautiful and absolutely worth an evening, if only to have a drink and people-watch.

  • Tambi: An Indian-Korean fusion restaurant, you will find the food to be as delectable as the vibes.

  • Por Kee Eating House: A great local restaurant—it’s no frills but you’ll have one of the best meals you’ve ever eaten. I recommend the champagne short ribs!

  • Komala Vilas: Located in Little India, Komala Vilas is a great restaurant for authentic Indian vegetarian cuisine. Try the thali plate or the onion rava masala dosa!

Need to know

  • Singapore is an incredible city, and displays a harmonious fusion between several cultures. Make sure you take the time while you’re visiting to learn more about the history of the city and how it became what it is today.

  • Singapore is a GREAT place to visit as a first stop in a larger Southeast Asia itinerary, and is an easier city to navigate if you’re nervous about visiting a new country/continent. What makes it so easy? English is one of the national languages, so there is generally not a language barrier for English speaking travelers, making it a great entry point to a new region.
