Curator’s statement
This is an under-the-radar destination for Americans. Koreans are already well aware of the lure of The Philippines. When Americans think of Southeast Asian islands, the first country that comes to mind is likely Thailand. I prefer to go to off-the-beaten-path countries and the Philippines was exceptional. I didn’t want to spend my time traveling, so I flew directly into Cebu to start my stay.

Things to do in the Philippines

Jungle ATV ride in the shadows of the Chocolate Hills on Bohol
There are over 1,700 islands in the Philippines and probably a dozen that are well-visited. Some are good for surfing (Siargao), some for honeymoons (Boracay), etc. After researching, I narrowed it down to Cebu, Bohol, and Palawan. I wanted a mix of adventure and beach relaxation. Each island is unique and beautiful in its own way.
To get between the islands depends on distance. From Cebu, I took the ferry over to Bohol, which was just an island away. From Bohol, I flew on a local airline to Palawan since a ferry would’ve been many hours and I didn't want to waste my time traveling. To get around on the islands, I did not brave a Jeepny (the local bus system), but I did download the Grab app, which is their version of Uber. For the most part, I relaxed at the resorts and took my pre-scheduled tours.
Diving with whale sharks
One of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip was swimming with whale sharks in Oslob, Cebu. Floating alongside these gentle giants during their migration was both humbling and exhilarating—there’s something truly awe-inspiring about sharing the water with the largest fish in the world. The clear waters of Oslob and the incredible wildlife encounter made this a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that I’ll never forget. Well worth the 2 am wake-up call.
Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls
Canyoneering at Kawasan Falls in Cebu is an unforgettable adventure through some of the island’s most stunning jungle landscapes. The route takes you over cliffs, through cascading waterfalls, and into natural pools of incredible aqua-blue water, fed by a spring that keeps it refreshingly chilly at every turn. Along the way, you’ll hike, swim, and jump your way through narrow gorges, hidden caves, and rushing streams, surrounded by lush tropical greenery.
It’s thrilling, immersive, and absolutely breathtaking—a perfect way to experience Cebu’s natural beauty up close while getting an exhilarating dose of adventure. This is a must-do for anyone visiting the Philippines! Perfect for all levels.
ATV in the jungle
ATV riding in the Chocolate Hills of Bohol is an exhilarating way to explore one of the Philippines’ most iconic landscapes. As you navigate the rolling hills, winding trails, and lush countryside, you get a hands-on, adventurous perspective that simply can’t be experienced from a car or viewpoint alone. The ride is scenic, thrilling, and full of surprises, from steep inclines to dusty paths, so don’t be afraid to get a little dirty—it’s all part of the fun!
Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, it’s a unique way to connect with nature, feel the thrill of the terrain, and take in the breathtaking vistas of the Chocolate Hills up close.
SUP on the Loboc River
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on the Loboc River in Bohol is a serene escape into nature, offering a peaceful way to glide along calm, emerald waters. Surrounded by lush jungle, you’ll be accompanied by the gentle sounds of chirping birds, croaking frogs, and distant roosters, creating a soundtrack of pure tropical tranquility.
Moving at your own pace, you can take in the beauty of the riverbanks, watch the local wildlife, and feel completely immersed in the rhythm of the jungle. It’s a relaxing, restorative adventure that lets you connect with nature, unwind, and experience the calm magic of Bohol from the water.
Palawan island-hopping
Island hopping in El Nido, Palawan, is a breathtaking adventure through turquoise lagoons, hidden beaches, and dramatic limestone cliffs. With a variety of tour options—Tour A, B, C, and D—you can explore different clusters of islands, each offering unique experiences: swimming in secret lagoons, snorkeling over vibrant coral reefs, kayaking through calm waters, or relaxing on pristine sandbars and secluded coves.
Between adventures on the water, strolling around downtown El Nido lets you enjoy charming streets, local markets, and seaside cafes, giving you a taste of the town’s laid-back island life. Combining adventure, natural beauty, and local culture, island-hopping here is an unforgettable way to experience the magic of Palawan.
Places to eat & drink in the Philippines

I have to be honest, my palate was not meant for Filipino food. I mostly ate at the resort buffets and kept it simple. Here are a few places that came recommended.
House of Lechon: A go-to spot for Cebu’s famous crispy lechon, served in a colorful space with other Filipino classics.
Anzani: An upscale Mediterranean restaurant offering upscale dishes, sunset views, and a dress-up setting ideal for a night out.
Kinabuchs Grill & Bar: Local hangout serving Filipino comfort food and fresh seafood in a laid-back, open-air setting.
Need to know
There's so much to do in the Philippines, and there's an island for everyone. The beaches are some of the best in the world, so you can mix relaxation with adventure.
Seeing tarsiers in Bohol is a unique wildlife experience, offering the chance to observe these tiny (the size of a baseball), wide-eyed primates up close in their natural habitat. Visiting a tarsier sanctuary provides a safe and educational encounter with one of the world’s smallest and most endangered primates. They were the cutest!
Southeast Asian countries also offer very affordable spa services, so treat yourself to a massage or several during your stay!
The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are a remarkable natural wonder, featuring over 1,200 symmetrical, grass-covered limestone mounds that turn a rich brown in the dry season. This unique geological formation creates a breathtaking and otherworldly landscape.
Seda Lio Resort
If you're really craving luxury and relaxation, Seda Lio Resort never had more than 10 people on the beach at any time. The resort offers kayaks, SUPs, and more to be active in the water. I was lucky enough to visit during turtle hatching season and got to see baby sea turtles make their way back to the sea—a truly incredible experience to witness!
