Curator’s statement
I’ve been going to Napa Valley for years, and, despite having visited a few dozen times, I always want to go back. I love the luxury hotels that still feel easy and unpretentious, the fact that I’ll never experience every winery, and the incredible food scene. One thing I always tell people planning their first trip is that Napa Valley is so much more than the town of Napa. Where you stay, how you map out your days, and which wineries you choose really do matter and can completely shape your experience.

Things to do in Napa Valley

The pool at Solage, Auberge Collection
Hot air balloon ride
It’s an early wake-up call, but it’s absolutely worth it because floating over Napa Valley at sunrise is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
Wine tasting
This is probably why you came to Napa in the first place. Wineries range from mass market to very private and bespoke, appointment-only tastings. My husband is a sommelier and we’ve visited Napa dozens of times, so I would be happy to help make sure your itinerary fits the experience that would work best for you.
Spa day
There are incredible spas throughout Napa Valley, especially at the luxury hotels. Calistoga is known for its mud baths, which are a fun and very Napa experience.
Relax at your hotel pool
This might sound simple, but I love ensuring I have downtime at the hotel to enjoy the beautiful grounds and amenities.
Long, relaxed meals
Some of my favorite memories in Napa are sitting down for a really good, unrushed meal. Whether it’s a casual lunch or a special dinner, the food scene in Napa is incredible and meant to be enjoyed slowly.
Places to eat & drink in Napa Valley

Charter Oak
One of my favorite spots for a relaxed but really high-quality meal. It’s all about simple, seasonal food done really well, served family-style, with a great indoor-outdoor setting that feels very Napa.
Ad Hoc
Casual Thomas Keller restaurant with a four-course, farm-to-table, family-style menu that changes daily, accompanied by a small, accessible wine list and twist on classic cocktails.
Ad Hoc Addendum by Thomas Keller
Grab the famous buttermilk fried chicken, a crispy chicken sandwich, or a pulled pork sandwich from the walk-up window and enjoy it at the picnic tables in the garden.
The Modern Bakery
The best English muffins in the world (Oprah agrees). I’m a carry-on-only traveler and I still insist on bringing a sleeve of these home with me. Locations in downtown St. Helena or downtown Napa.
Oakville Grocery
Grab a made-to-order sandwich or salad for a picnic at a local winery.
Hog Island Oysters
I like to get to Oxbow Market just before opening for fresh oysters and no lines—sitting at the bar is my favorite way to enjoy them.
Schramsberg Vineyards
This is one of my favorite places for sparkling wine. The cave tour and tasting feels a little more special than your typical winery visit.
Frank Family Vineyards
A really welcoming wine tasting experience with beautiful grounds and wines that are easy to love.
Need to know
Wine tasting in Napa can get pricey, but here’s a pro tip: Many of our partner hotels offer complimentary or discounted tastings for guests, adding real value to your visit. Most wineries require reservations, so it’s best to book well in advance. I can recommend the wineries that suit your style and even arrange a driver to make the day effortless, so you can focus on enjoying the wine without any worries about getting around.
