Advisor - Bangkok for People Who Think They Don't Like Big Cities
Curator’s statement

Bangkok can feel intimidating on paper. More than 11 million people. Endless traffic. Neon lights. Temples, markets, rooftop bars and street food—all competing for your attention. After several visits, I've discovered the secret isn't trying to see everything. It's knowing where to slow down, and being selective about the "must-sees"—sometimes skipping them altogether. The other key? Choosing a hotel that's more than just a place to sleep, but an essential part of the experience. I've tested luxury hotels, sought out memorable restaurants, explored wellness experiences and wandered neighborhoods where locals actually spend their time. The result is a Bangkok that's less overwhelming and far more rewarding—and one I can tailor to your preferred pace, style, and budget.

Things to do in Bangkok

Step off a longtail boat to explore the Artist's Village

Stay in a hotel that shapes your experience

The right hotel isn't just where you sleep—it's what determines the pace of your trip. I always recommend choosing a property that's a destination in itself and well positioned to explore without feeling like you're constantly battling the city. Make sure to leave unscheduled time to enjoy all the hotel has to offer.

Beyond the tourist sistricts: An afternoon in Ari

Slow down and discover one of Bangkok's most liveable neighborhoods. Ari is full of leafy streets, independent cafés, boutiques, restaurants and wellness studios.

Make wellness part of your itinerary

As one of the best-value wellness destinations in the world, take a break from the heat and the intensity and enjoy a traditional Thai massage, Korean-style facial, lash extensions or manicure-pedicure; walk-ins often available.

Consider an aesthetic appointment

Bangkok has become a popular destination for international visitors seeking everything from dental care and full preventative check-ups to aesthetic treatments such as Botox, skin therapies and MediSpa services. Many clinics cater specifically to overseas guests, with English-speaking staff, transparent pricing and scheduling appointments in advance that take into account your travel schedule.

The quality is exceptional, and the prices make it easy to indulge. In a 6-hour period I was able to have a dental cleaning and all annual health check-ups with most results reviewed with me before I left for the day, and with digital and paper copies to take with me.

If this is something you're considering, make sure to research reputable providers before you travel. As with any medical or cosmetic treatment, it's important to choose qualified practitioners and make decisions based on your own research.

Take a longtail boat canal tour

A two-hour longtail boat tour along Bangkok's canals offers one of the most relaxing introductions to the city. You'll glide past traditional homes and waterways enjoying wonderful views of many of Bangkok's famous temples from the river and making a stop at the character-filled Artist Village.

If your goal is to step inside every temple and learn its history in depth, this works best as an introduction rather than a replacement.

Places to eat & drink in Bangkok

One of the colorful boutique-style stores to explore in Ari (it's candy!)

  • SookSiam: If true street food makes you nervous, visit SookSiam inside the high-end mall IkonSiam for a quality floating market style experience, within air-conditioned comfort.

  • Rongros: Book ahead or you will miss out! The best time to go is for sunset either upstairs outside or by the windows while watching sunset with a view of Wat Arun while dining on twists on elevated Thai classics like green curry with NZ ribeye and with plenty of options to keep vegetarians happy.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Singh: Creative tasting menus at this Mexican and Indian fusion restaurant with chef’s seating around the open kitchen which is great for solo travelers.

  • Semolina (Ari): For a break from the (delicious) local food, this Italian restaurant serves up handmade pasta alongside a broad menu.

  • Thong (Ari): Stop by here to pick up creative snacks for friends and family back home (although you may need to sample for some for you too!)

  • Cru Champagne Bar: Classic and stylish rooftop champagne bar, with added benefit of two other rooftop options in the same building if you want to try something different (or all of them).

Need to know

  • VIP: FastTrack immigration with private transfer on arrival. This takes the stress out of arrival and can literally save you hours.

  • Don't feel obliged to do everything: Yes, the Grand Palace, temples and markets deserve their reputation, but they don't all need to fit into one itinerary. Bangkok is far more enjoyable when you choose the experiences that genuinely interest you and leave space to simply enjoy the city.
