Day 1: Arrival in Maui & ease into island life

Maui at sunset

Arrive in Maui and settle into your home base with a relaxed, no-rush welcome to the island. After picking up your rental car, head to your hotel to drop your bags, stretch your legs, and let travel fatigue melt away. This first evening is intentionally light—perfect for a sunset walk, a casual oceanfront dinner, or simply enjoying the warm breeze with a drink in hand. For those who want to dip a toe into beach time, Maui’s south shore offers calm, accessible beaches that are just as enjoyable for strolling and people-watching as they are for swimming—no pressure to do more than feels right on day one.

Skip over-planning tonight. An early night or a sunset dinner sets the tone for the scenic days ahead and helps everyone adjust to island time.

Day 2: Haleakalā National Park & Upcountry Maui

Haleakalā National Park

Today is all about seeing Maui from a completely different perspective—literally. Start the day with a scenic drive up to Haleakalā National Park, where sweeping volcanic landscapes and cloud-level views make this one of the most unforgettable experiences on the island, even for non-hikers. You’ll explore overlooks, short walks, and viewpoints at your own pace, with no strenuous activity required. After descending, spend the afternoon in Upcountry Maui, known for cooler temperatures, rolling hills, local farms, and charming small towns—a perfect contrast to the coast.

This is a great day for layers and comfortable shoes. Adventurous travelers can opt for longer walks or add a stop at a winery or farm, while others can simply enjoy the scenery and fresh air.

Day 3: Road to Hāna

Hawaii waterfalls

Today is one of Maui’s most iconic experiences: the Road to Hāna. This journey is less about rushing to a destination and more about the drive itself—winding coastal roads, lush rainforest, dramatic cliffs, and countless opportunities to stop and explore along the way. Expect waterfalls, botanical viewpoints, black sand beaches, and short, optional walks that let everyone participate at their own comfort level.

This day is intentionally customizable: travelers can keep it relaxed and scenic, or lean into light adventure with swimming holes, short hikes, or extra stops.

Start early, pack snacks, and let the day unfold naturally—flexibility is the key to enjoying Hāna without feeling overwhelmed.

Day 4: Island hop to the Big Island

Today is all about transitioning islands and shifting scenery. After a morning flight, you’ll arrive on the Big Island and head to the Kona side, where the landscape immediately feels bolder and more dramatic than Maui. Once settled, the afternoon is intentionally light—perfect for unpacking, grabbing a casual bite, and soaking in your new surroundings without a packed agenda.

As the day winds down, enjoy a relaxed evening along the Kona Coast, where lava rock shorelines and golden sunsets set the tone for the days ahead.

This is a great night for an easy dinner and an early evening—tomorrow’s adventures showcase why the Big Island is unlike anywhere else in Hawaiʻi.

Day 5: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Today is one of the most unforgettable days of the trip as you explore Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, where the island’s raw power and history come to life. You’ll travel through dramatic lava fields, peer into massive volcanic craters, and walk through lava tubes formed by ancient eruptions—experiences that feel truly one-of-a-kind without requiring strenuous activity.

The drive itself is part of the magic, with constantly changing scenery that shows just how diverse the Big Island really is.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring layers—the park’s elevation means cooler temperatures, and the weather can shift quickly. This day offers awe-inspiring sights, powerful stories, and a deep sense of place, making it a highlight even for travelers who prefer a slower pace.

Day 6: Kona coffee country & sacred South Kona Coast

Today is all about slowing the pace and experiencing the heart and soul of the Big Island. You’ll explore Kona Coffee Country, where rolling green hills, ocean views, and small local farms offer a relaxed glimpse into one of Hawaiʻi's most famous exports. This is an easy, low-impact way to learn about local culture while enjoying beautiful scenery (and maybe a little caffeine boost).

The afternoon shifts to the South Kona Coast, home to some of the island’s most meaningful historic sites and dramatic shoreline views. Expect sacred Hawaiian places, coastal lava rock landscapes, and moments that feel grounding and reflective rather than rushed.

A note from Samantha

This is a great day for light layers, sun protection, and taking your time—it’s less about checking boxes and more about soaking it all in before your final island hop.

Day 7: Island hop to Oʻahu & welcome to Waikīkī

Today is all about transition and contrast as you leave the laid-back Big Island behind and head to the vibrant energy of Oʻahu. After a short inter-island flight, you’ll arrive in Honolulu and settle into Waikīkī—where everything is walkable, lively, and effortlessly social. This is a great day to keep plans flexible: think beach walks, casual shopping, and a relaxed lunch or cocktail as you get oriented.

Once settled, the afternoon is intentionally open so everyone can recharge after several adventure-filled days.

Waikīkī shines at sunset—even a simple stroll along the beach or Kalākaua Avenue feels like an experience. Tonight sets the tone for the final stretch of the trip: easy, fun, and perfectly paced.

Day 8: Pearl Harbor, Honolulu history & island reflection

Today is a powerful and meaningful look at Oʻahu’s history, starting with a morning visit to Pearl Harbor. Experiencing the USS Arizona Memorial (and optionally the USS Missouri) offers important context and reflection, and scheduling this earlier in the day helps avoid crowds and heat. This is one of those experiences that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Afterward, shift gears back toward modern Honolulu with time for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. This is a great window for exploring nearby neighborhoods, visiting a lookout, or simply returning to Waikīkī to decompress.

The evening is perfect for reconnecting as a group—whether that’s a sunset walk, a casual dinner, or live music nearby. Today blends history, reflection, and togetherness, creating a meaningful contrast to the adventure-heavy days earlier in the trip.

Samantha Villegas

A note from Samantha

Plan something light and flexible for the afternoon—Pearl Harbor can be emotionally impactful, and most travelers appreciate unstructured time afterward.

Day 9: Oʻahu at your own pace & farewell luau

Today is designed to be flexible, easygoing, and reflective—the perfect way to soak in your final moments in Hawaiʻi without feeling rushed or over-scheduled. After a slow morning in Waikīkī, you can choose how adventurous (or relaxed) you want the day to be: Explore Hawaiian history at ʻIolani Palace, take a scenic drive toward iconic spots like the Dole Plantation or the North Shore, or simply enjoy one last beach walk, coffee stop, or shopping stroll.

Nothing today is mandatory—it’s about following your energy and savoring the experience rather than checking boxes. The day intentionally winds down in the afternoon so you can reset, refresh, and come together in the evening for a farewell luau—a beautiful, celebratory way to close out the journey with music, culture, storytelling, and shared memories.

Day 10: Departure day

This morning is all about a smooth, unhurried departure and one last moment of island ease. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast, a final walk along Waikīkī Beach, or a quick coffee stop nearby before heading to the airport. With packing already mostly done and no sightseeing planned, the focus is on wrapping up the trip feeling refreshed rather than rushed. Allow extra time for airport check-in and return travel, especially for inter-island connections, and take a moment to reflect on the memories made—from volcanoes and coastlines to culture, laughter, and shared experiences that will last long after the journey ends.

Need to know

Hawaiʻi is relaxed by nature—and the best trips are the ones that leave room to slow down and enjoy it. Reservations for certain experiences (like Pearl Harbor, ʻIolani Palace, national parks, and luaus) can book up in advance, so planning ahead is key, but it’s just as important to leave space for spontaneity. Pack light, layers are your friend (especially for Haleakalā and Volcanoes National Park), and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Most importantly, embrace island time—not every moment needs a plan, and some of the best memories come from unplanned sunsets, shared meals, and simply being together.
