Curator’s statement

Just a quick 2.5-hour flight from my home town of Los Angeles, Puerto Vallarta is my slice of tropical paradise. It’s the kind of destination that’s easy to get to—but hard to leave behind. I find myself returning again and again, not just for the stunning beaches and lush jungle adventures, but because the warmth of the local Mexican residents always makes me feel like family.

Things to do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Jungle ATV and tequila tasting excursion

  • Greatest outdoor adventure: This adventure isn’t for the faint of heart—but if you’re up for it, it’s absolutely unforgettable. It all started with a speedboat ride across the open water to a remote fishing village, where we climbed into a rugged, covered vehicle that took us deeper into the jungle. From there, we saddled up on horseback and followed a narrow, winding mountain trail that led us high into the Sierra Madre. The real adrenaline kicked in once we reached the top. We rappelled down a waterfall, soared through the trees on ziplines, and splashed down a jungle waterslide. It was hands-down the most exhilarating outdoor adventure I’ve ever done.

  • Rhythm of the Night: This unforgettable evening begins with a sunset cruise across the sparkling waters of Banderas Bay, where the views alone are worth the trip. As the sky fades into deep purples and oranges, you arrive at a secluded cove lit only by torchlight. A delicious Mexican buffet awaits, served under the stars in a stunning beachfront setting. But the real magic begins after dinner—a mesmerizing nighttime show filled with fire, music, dance, and jaw-dropping variety acts. It’s part mystical, part theatrical, and entirely breathtaking. Rhythm of the Night is more than just a show—it’s an experience that captures the spirit and soul of Puerto Vallarta.

  • Jungle ATV: For thrill-seekers, this off-road adventure through the jungle is a must. You’ll spend a few adrenaline-filled hours behind the wheel of your own ATV or RZR, navigating rugged trails, splashing through muddy paths, and weaving through dense tropical scenery. It’s bumpy, dirty, and totally exhilarating—so don’t be afraid to get a little muddy. Whether you’re racing through puddles or climbing steep jungle terrain, this ride delivers non-stop excitement with unforgettable views along the way. Two of our stops included free tequila tastings and an optional lunch in the jungle.

  • Puerto Vallarta food tour: Embark on a flavorful journey through Puerto Vallarta’s charming Romantic Zone with this immersive food tour. Our stops included eight local restaurants that featured authentic Mexican cuisine, from savory street tacos to sweet local treats like helado (ice cream) and chocolates. Every meal was prepared fresh. Along the way, our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating insights into Mexican culture, history, and culinary traditions. It’s more than a food tour—it’s a delicious cultural experience you won’t forget!

  • Malecon: This boardwalk is located in the Romantic Zone that consists of several local restaurants and souvenir shops. It’s a great place to take selfies next to the sea.

Places to eat & drink in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Salsa and agua fresca

  • Tacos El Cunado: Just steps from the beach in the heart of Zona Romántica, Tacos El Cuñado is a local favorite known for serving some of the best chorizo tacos in Puerto Vallarta. This no-frills taco stand also features a self-serve salsa bar, offering a flavorful range from mild to fiery salsas—perfect for customizing your taco just the way you like it.

  • La Chilaqueria: Start your day like a local at La Chilaquería, a beloved breakfast spot known for its delicious chilaquiles. I highly recommend the chicken chilaquiles with both red and green sauce—a perfect balance of flavor and spice. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a cup of their rich, aromatic Mexican coffee for the full experience. This cozy eatery is a must-visit for anyone craving an authentic Mexican breakfast.

  • Mariscos El Guero: Serves delicious mahi-mahi tacos.

  • Vallarta Factory: A great spot to satisfy your chocolate cravings. I tried the dark chocolate almond cluster with an iced coffee.

  • A Page in the Sun: Located just steps from the beach in Zona Romántica, A Page in the Sun is a cozy and charming coffee shop offering both indoor and outdoor seating. Whether you’re looking to relax with a book or catch up with friends, this spot has a welcoming atmosphere and serves delicious lattes that keep locals and visitors coming back. It’s the perfect place to unwind with great coffee just moments from the ocean.

Need to know

Mosquito repellent: If you’re visiting during the summer months, be sure to bring mosquito repellent, especially for evenings and outdoor activities.

Currency: While US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, it’s best to carry Mexican pesos for better exchange rates—particularly when using taxis or shopping at local markets.

Tipping: Tipping is customary and greatly appreciated in Mexico. A small tip can go a long way in showing gratitude for good service.
