Curator’s statement
San Sebastián stole my heart with its stunning beaches, warm hospitality, and a food scene that somehow delights both adventurous adults and picky kids alike. It’s that rare kind of destination that’s just as magical for lazy beach days as it is for wandering through charming, history-rich streets—all within easy walking distance. As a travel advisor and a mom, I love how effortless and enjoyable it feels to explore here as a family. Bonus: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, this city shines with gluten-free, dairy-free, and meat-free options that don’t skimp on flavor or fun.

Things to do in San Sebastián

My daughters and me exploring Old Town
Things to do in San Sebastián (with kids in tow)
La Concha Beach
Often named one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe, La Concha delivers calm, family-friendly waves, soft sand perfect for digging, and a scenic promenade ideal for stroller strolls. Parents will love the stunning bay views, while kids splash and play—it’s beach bliss for all ages.
Stroll through Old Town (Parte Vieja)
San Sebastián’s charming Old Town is full of energy and easy to explore, even with little ones in tow. Kids love peeking into pastry shops, spotting street performers, and checking out the local artisan stores, while parents can sneak in a pintxo or two between stops.
Alderdi Eder park & carousel
Situated next to La Concha Beach, this seaside park is a kid favorite, with shaded playgrounds, grassy space to run, and a picturesque, vintage-style carousel. It’s an easy and joyful pit stop—plus, the views aren’t bad either.
Boat ride around the bay & Isla de Santa Clara
Hop on a short and budget-friendly boat ride for a cruise around the bay and stop off at Isla de Santa Clara for a light hike and bring-your-own picnic with views. It’s a relaxed, scenic way to explore the coast—and yes, the boat ride alone is half the fun.
Zurriola Beach
If your kids are a little older (or just full of energy), head to Zurriola Beach for more action-packed waves and a chance to try a beginner surf lesson. It’s a youthful, local-feeling spot with a cool vibe and space to run wild.
Monte Urgull Hike
This mellow hill hike behind Old Town offers sweeping views, shady trails, and historic castle ruins at the top. It’s a great intro to hiking for school-aged kids and offers plenty of spots to stop for a photo (or a snack break).
Tabakalera Cultural Center
Once a tobacco factory, now a creative hub, Tabakalera is home to rotating art exhibits, workshops, and a dreamy public library with a kid-friendly reading zone. It’s modern, cool, and a low-key gem for culturally curious families.
Coastal hike to Pasaia
For older kids and teens, this scenic six-mile coastal hike offers stunning cliffside views and a sense of adventure. The trail winds from San Sebastián to the charming fishing village of Pasaia, where you can grab lunch by the harbor before heading back by bus or boat.
Places to eat & drink in San Sebastián

We enjoyed these pintxos on the patio while looking at the harbor!
Maiatza
This charming café near Old Town is the locals’ go-to for fresh, feel-good meals—including plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. From smoothie bowls to hearty toasts, it’s a relaxed and friendly spot that caters to both health-conscious travelers and hungry kids.
Sebastian Jatetxea
This restaurant combines harbor views with fresh Basque traditional dishes right to your plate. The menu features approachable dishes kids can enjoy alongside grown-up flavors. The gluten-free options are abundant! Where else can you find gluten-free calamari?
Bodegón Alejandro
From beloved local institution to the Michelin guide, Bodegón Alejandro serves classic Basque dishes in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Their hearty stews, fresh seafood, and seasonal specialties are perfect for families wanting a true taste of the region’s culinary heritage. Their fresh-baked gluten-free bread will even fool the naysayers!
Carlos Arribas Maisu-Izozkigilea
A favorite ice cream spot in San Sebastián known for its delicious gluten-free cones and safe scooping practices. They offer a variety of tasty gelato and sorbet flavors, making it a perfect stop for families with gluten sensitivities.
Piknic
Near Zurriola Beach, this stylish café serves up fresh smoothies, salads, and sandwiches. It’s a solid pick for a quick lunch, especially for picky eaters or plant-based travelers.
Otaegui Bakery
Step into this elegant bakery for croissants, cookies, or the beloved pastel vasco—an almond pastry that hits the sweet spot for all ages. Perfect for a snack stop between beach and park.
Need to know
Remember that Spain eats late—most restaurants don’t open for dinner until 8 pm. Plan on late lunches or bring snacks to keep the kids happy in between.
Spanish and Basque are both spoken, but English is widely understood in tourist areas.
The city is extremely walkable, and many hotels have strollers available if needed. Biking along the promenade is also a fun option for families.
Even in summer, bring layers. Evenings can be breezy and cool in northern Spain.
