Curator’s statement

Hong Kong is where I spent 18 years of my formative years growing up and every time I revisit my hometown, I marvel at this slice of architectural heaven. Here are a few of my favorite spots that I always take visitors or suggest friends to see for themselves!

Things to do in Hong Kong

An aerial view of a city at night.

Cruise on the Aqua Luna:

Escape the crowd on the Avenue of the stars by boarding the Aqua Luna (two Chinese wooden junk boats that circulate the harbor) for a spectacular front-row seat of the iconic Victoria harbor. There are a few variations you could partake in, such as the afternoon tea cruise, sunset cruise or night skyline cruise with the option to get on/be dropped off on either side of the harbor.

Grab a bite at the Ladies Street Market Sik Faan Co:

Tucked away in the hustle and bustle of the famous Ladies Street Market (where you can put your bargaining skills into practice), check out this photogenic indoor old-style Hong Kong-inspired restaurant with neon signs for signature Cantonese dishes coupled with local beers.

Pose in front of the Monster Building:

If you love architecture, you should definitely check out this private estate that has inspired many Hollywood movies, most notably the Transformers: Age of Extinction. Stop by % Arabica after for a quick pick me up coffee after the photography session.

Hop on a Cable Car Ride to Big Buddha:

If there is one thing you should splurge on for this trip transport-wise, take the Ngong Ping 360 Crystal+ cabins for an expedited trip up and down the Lantau Island with expansive views of the 234 islands that make up the city.

Lookout on the Peak Galleria:

The Sky Terrace 428 is the optimal viewing point for a bird's eye view of the city.

Tour the old prisons and art in Tai Kwun:

Located in prime Central, this historical site was formerly old prison and police station and has been transformed into an arts and culture hub, sprinkled with restaurants, speakeasy-esque bars and art galleries.

Take a hike on Dragon's Back:

This is a moderate urban hike of two to two-and-a-half hours with beautiful views of the Shek O peninsula, accessible by double decker bus number nine, which stops right at the start of the trail.

Watch a Horse Race:

There are typically races at the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Happy Valley on Wednesday nights where you can partake in horse race betting (or just watch!) while enjoying drinks along the race.

Day Trips:

Macau: Travel by ferry or on the new bus that departs from the Hong Kong International Airport to experience the former Portuguese colony's architectural charm, Macanese fusion cuisines, as well as its status as "The Vegas of the East."

Places to eat & drink in Hong Kong

A low angled shot of the Monster building during the daytime.

Enjoy a drink at Cardinal Point:

This newer rooftop has a wonderful view of the city with ample indoor and outdoor seating room and a fine selection of Southeast Asian-inspired specialty cocktails. Expect DJ sets on the weekends later in the night as well.
