Advisor - Ski. Eat. Repeat. A North Lake Tahoe Winter Guide
Curator’s statement

This destination is special to me because it’s where I grew up skiing and first learned to love the sport. Palisades and Northstar hold so many memories of family ski trips, long days on the slopes, and the excitement of improving each season. For me, North Lake Tahoe isn’t just a ski destination—it’s where my passion for the mountains truly began.

Things to do in Lake Tahoe

Skiing at Palisades, Lake Tahoe

  • Ski Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows): This is my favorite place to ski! Famous for hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics, Palisades Tahoe is the largest ski area in the region with over 6,000 acres of terrain. Advanced skiers love the legendary KT-22, while beginners will find plenty of gentle groomers. The Village offers shops, dining, and lively après spots.

  • Ski Northstar California: A family favorite, Northstar blends luxury with comfort. It features impeccably groomed runs, terrain parks, and a charming village with an ice-skating rink. It’s great for intermediate skiers and families looking for a resort-style experience.

  • Snowshoeing: Explore Tahoe’s winter wonderland at a slower pace. Popular trails include Chickadee Ridge (where friendly chickadees will eat right out of your hand) and Tahoe Donner.

  • Cross-country skiing: North Lake Tahoe is home to some of the best Nordic centers in the country, like Tahoe XC and Royal Gorge, with miles of scenic groomed trails.

  • Tubing & sledding: Family-friendly fun at resorts like Northstar’s tubing hill or Tahoe City Winter Sports Park.

  • Snowmobiling: Guided tours let you zoom through alpine meadows and forests, with sweeping views of the lake and surrounding peaks.

  • AprèssSki & fireside lounging: From sipping a cocktail at Le Chamois in Palisades to relaxing by Northstar’s fire pits with hot cocoa, après is an essential Tahoe winter activity.

  • Ice skating: Northstar’s charming village has an outdoor rink surrounded by shops and restaurants, perfect for families or a cozy date night.

  • Hot tubbing with a view: Many lodges and rentals have outdoor hot tubs where you can soak under the stars after a long ski day.

Places to eat & drink in Lake Tahoe

  • Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats (Truckee): A lively spot in historic downtown Truckee known for creative cocktails, live music, and hearty New American dishes made with local ingredients.

  • Cottonwood Restaurant & Bar (Truckee): Perched on a hill with views of Truckee, this rustic lodge-style restaurant is one of the oldest ski lodges in the US Great for cozy dinners with craft cocktails and hearty plates.

  • Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique (Tahoe City): A fine-dining favorite blending Asian and European influences with fresh, local ingredients. Known for its lake views and inventive dishes.

  • River Ranch Lodge (Alpine Meadows): Iconic après-ski destination along the Truckee River. Perfect for warming up with drinks by the fire after skiing at Palisades Tahoe.

  • Christy Hill Lakeside Bistro (Tahoe City): An intimate, upscale dining experience overlooking Lake Tahoe, known for modern American cuisine and romantic sunsets.

  • Gar Woods Grill & Pier (Carnelian Bay): A Tahoe institution right on the water, famous for its rum cocktails and vibrant après-ski scene.

  • Uncorked Wine Bar (Tahoe City & Truckee): A relaxed wine bar with a thoughtfully curated list, perfect for après-ski tastings or a cozy night out.

  • Jake’s on the Lake (Tahoe City): A Tahoe institution with gorgeous lakefront views. It’s casual but polished, serving seafood, steaks, and island-inspired dishes—perfect for après cocktails or sunset dinners.

  • Le Chamois (Palisades Tahoe Village): A legendary après-ski hangout for decades. Nothing fancy, just pitchers of beer, pizza, and a lively, fun vibe steps from the slopes.

Need to know

  • Rent a car: While shuttles exist, a car makes it easier to hop between resorts and explore the lake.

  • Altitude adjustment: Drink lots of water and take it easy your first day, Tahoe’s elevation is around 6,200–8,000 feet.

  • Buy lift tickets in advance: Resorts like Palisades and Northstar often sell out or hike up same-day prices.

  • Non-ski days: Try snowshoeing, tubing, or simply take in the breathtaking lake views from Sand Harbor.
