Advisor - Winter Magic in Crested Butte: Your Guide to Colorado’s Coolest Mountain Town
Curator’s statement

Crested Butte is one of my favorite ski towns in Colorado, and my family makes the trip there every year. It takes a bit more effort to get to from the Denver area, but the drive itself is a lovely, easy half-day road trip that winds through charming small towns along the way. This historic mining town, with its colorful Victorian buildings and rich past, is arguably the last authentic ski town in Colorado. Off the mountain, the town itself is a major part of the experience—full of character, friendly locals, and a surprising number of excellent restaurants that rival those in much larger destinations.

Things to do in Crested Butte

Snowy steps and snowy laughs

Downhill skiing

For me, skiing in Crested Butte is that perfect mix of rugged charm and amazing terrain that keeps me coming back. I love that it still feels real and unpretentious. The views always blow me away, the snow is usually soft and plenty, and the whole vibe is way more laid-back than at the big resorts.

Crested Butte Nordic Ski Center

The Crested Butte Nordic Center is a great spot to enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in a relaxed, scenic setting. Just steps from downtown, there are trails that lead right out from the center. You can rent gear, take a lesson, or even join a guided tour. For something extra special, snowshoe or ski out to the Magic Meadows Yurt for a cozy meal in the woods. It’s simply magical. Make sure to book dinner at the yurt well in advance!

Shopping on Elk Avenue

Shopping on Elk Avenue in Crested Butte is a charming experience that blends mountain town character with artistic flair. Browse cozy boutiques and art galleries showcasing local talent, or pick up tasteful home decor pieces that bring a bit of alpine style home with you. The Crested Butte Museum has a well-curated and informative exhibit about the history of the town and is a worthwhile visit.

Snowmobiling

A snowmobiling tour might be just what you need to add some adrenaline to your Crested Butte winter escape. Action Adventures' office is located downtown and offers full- and half-day guided tours through the stunning Gunnison National Forest. You’ll ride through powder-filled meadows, aspen groves, and breathtaking mountain terrain.

Fat biking

Fat biking brings a whole new meaning to year-round biking because, in Colorado, cycling doesn’t stop when the snow falls. With extra-wide tires built for snowy trails, fat bikes let you explore the winter wonderland on two wheels. Rentals and guidance are easy to find in town, making it a fun and accessible winter activity, whether you’re a die-hard cyclist or just want to try something new.

Places to eat & drink in Crested Butte

Delicious whipped ricotta with sourdough at Breadery

Breadery

My go-to dining spot that I never miss when I’m in Crested Butte. Breadery is a cozy spot known for its incredible sourdough flatbreads. The dough is perfectly chewy, with just the right tang and crisp char, making every bite rich with flavor. It’s a must-stop for anyone who loves good bread and fresh, thoughtful cooking.

Two Twelve

Two Twelve is a recent addition to Crested Butte’s dining scene. This elevated restaurant features a seasonal menu that emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients from small producers. We tried a crunchy pig’s ear dish when we were there on our last visit, and it was unique and absolutely delicious. The service is impeccable.

Izakaya Cabin

If you’re looking for something different, Izakaya Cabin would be a great option. A cozy restaurant tucked into a side alley off the main street, it offers Japanese small dishes that are great for sharing. It also has a good selection of Japanese sakes and whisky.

Sherpa Café

Sherpa Café in Crested Butte is a beloved local spot known for its authentic Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan cuisine. Perfect for warming up on a cold winter night, the flavorful bowls of curry never disappoint. It’s also a great choice for takeout when you want something comforting on the go.

The Secret Stash

This place needs no introduction in Crested Butte. There is usually a steady line out the door during dinner time. Its pizzas are known for bold, unique ingredient combinations and generous sizes, all served in a lively, upbeat atmosphere. Lunch is a great time to go if you want to avoid a long wait for a table.

Need to know

For anyone who chooses to fly in, there are direct flights from Dallas, Houston, Chicago, and Denver to the Gunnison (GUC) airport during the winter months.

The town shuttle is readily available on a regular schedule to take you between the town and the slopes. We can typically leave the car at the hotel for our entire trip once we arrive.
