Some destinations invite you to follow an itinerary. Oviedo invites you to forget it. My wife and I chose Oviedo for a simple reason: We wanted to slow down. From the very beginning, the journey became part of the experience. Rather than driving, we traveled by train from Madrid, enjoying the changing landscapes of northern Spain and the rare opportunity to disconnect, talk, and simply enjoy the time together. By the time we arrived, we already felt we had left the pace of everyday life behind. Oviedo is one of those rare cities where the best experiences are rarely planned. Elegant streets naturally lead to lively squares, museums, cafés, historic landmarks, and remarkable restaurants, making it easy to spend entire days simply wandering without ever feeling rushed. What I remember most is not a single monument, but the atmosphere. Oviedo feels peaceful, impeccably maintained, welcoming, and effortlessly elegant. Its residents are genuinely warm and take pride in sharing their city, making every visitor feel immediately at home.

The first time I visited La Casa del Presidente, I wasn't a guest. I had simply reserved a table at Caleña, curious to discover one of Ávila's most distinctive restaurants, nestled within this remarkable boutique hotel. That evening, after dinner, I wandered through its elegant lounges, peaceful gardens, and intimate common areas. Within minutes, I realized I wasn't exploring a hotel—I felt as though I had been welcomed into a beautifully preserved private residence, where every room still carried the warmth, character, and timeless elegance of the family who once called it home. Originally built as the residence of one of Spain's most distinguished political figures, the house has been thoughtfully transformed into a luxury boutique hotel while preserving the intimate atmosphere of a private home.

Some cities are remembered for a single landmark. What makes Segovia unforgettable is the journey between them. From the Roman Aqueduct to the fairytale Alcázar, every step reveals another chapter of the city's story, unfolding through lively squares, elegant streets, remarkable architecture and some of Castile's finest cuisine. My recommendation is simple: take your time, walk the entire route, and when you think you've seen it all, continue beyond the Alcázar, where peaceful riverside walks, historic monasteries and timeless views reveal a quieter, more authentic side of Segovia that many visitors never experience.

I thought I knew Ávila after visiting it twice. I had walked along its magnificent medieval walls, explored its historic streets, and enjoyed its award-winning cuisine. But on my third visit, I left my sightseeing list behind and simply stayed. Watching the illuminated walls after sunset, surrounded by centuries of history in complete tranquility, transformed Ávila from a memorable day trip into one of my favorite luxury escapes from Madrid. Today, I recommend Ávila not for the number of sights to visit, but for the unique opportunity to disconnect, stay in a boutique hotel, and experience one of Spain's best-preserved medieval cities once the day visitors have left.

Budapest was never about checking landmarks off a list for me. Watching the sun set over the Danube on our first evening, I realized this was a city best experienced at a slower pace. Many travelers arrive in Burgos with one destination in mind: its magnificent Gothic Cathedral. While it certainly deserves its reputation as one of Spain’s greatest architectural masterpieces, I believe Burgos reveals its true character between the landmarks, not just inside them. Every time I return, I naturally follow almost the same route—not because I have planned it that way, but because it simply feels right. I begin walking along the Paseo del Espolón, cross through the Puerta de Santa María into the historic center, spend time around the Cathedral, wander through the surrounding streets, and finish the day at the Castle Viewpoint overlooking the city. One of the things I enjoy most about Burgos is its authenticity. Pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago blend naturally with local residents, cafés fill with everyday life, and the city never feels like it exists only for visitors. For me, Burgos is a city that rewards those who choose to slow down and discover it one step at a time.

There are destinations you enjoy once, and others that quietly invite you to return. Toledo has become one of those places for me. Over the years, every visit has revealed a different side of the city. Beyond its extraordinary history and remarkable monuments, I've discovered peaceful viewpoints overlooking the Tagus River, unforgettable meals shared without rushing, charming cigarrales, and unexpected cultural experiences. While Toledo is often promoted as an easy day trip from Madrid, I believe staying at least two nights allows you to experience not only its remarkable historic center, but also the quieter landscapes, panoramic views, exceptional gastronomy, and slower rhythm that make Toledo one of Spain's most rewarding destinations. Give Toledo the time it deserves.
