From the outside, the hotel blends seamlessly into Old Port’s historical setting. But the interior feels much more in line with contemporary Portland, which has redefined itself as a trendy foodie destination that still pays homage to its roots as a fishing town.

3. The Press Hotel: a unique Portland, Maine hotel with a classy, vintage vibe

That said, The Press Hotel doesn’t leave Portland behind: the entrance doubles as an art gallery, showing off the best of the city’s talent, while UNION, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, boasts a menu that exemplifies “the partnership between local farmers and fishermen,” or in other words, locally caught seafood and Maine farm-to-table ingredients.

4. The Westin Portland Harborview: an elegant Downtown Portland hotel

Just a couple blocks from the Portland Museum of Art in Downtown, The Westin Portland Harborview occupies the same tower that once housed the Eastland Park Hotel, which opened in the late 1920s — it even bears the original landmark’s sign. And while The Westin underwent extensive modern renovations before it opened, subtle elements of the original structure’s early-20th-century design are still apparent. 

The hotel also features a full-service spa (named after the former proprietor), a classy rooftop bar, and a complimentary shuttle service that will take you to Old Port and other area attractions.

5. Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront: a sleek contemporary hotel in Old Port

Canopy by Hilton Portland Waterfront forgoes the historical nature of Old Port to embrace the contemporary design of big-city urban retreats (think hotels in San Francisco or Seattle hotels). All of the rooms feature a pseudo-minimalist design with sudden pops of color for an artful flair, along with posh furniture and decor. 

Admittedly, this isn’t the best hotel in Portland, Maine if you’re looking for quaint, New England vibes. But Canopy by Hilton is a great choice if you’re looking for trendy digs in an otherwise historical setting (making it a great choice for a chic girls’ getaway to Portland, Maine).
