Which part of Amsterdam is best to stay in?

Deciding where to stay in Amsterdam really comes down to what you want to do. But broadly, most travelers prefer to stay in Amsterdam-Centrum, or Amsterdam’s beautiful, canal-filled city center.

Many of the city’s most interesting landmarks, like the NEMO Science Museum and the Royal Palace are located here. That being said, this part of the city is made up of several neighborhoods and districts, from historic Grachtengordel to medieval De Wallen (which also has its famously risqué streets). So if you really want to narrow down your options (both in and outside of Centrum), your best bet is to plan your trip with Fora

4 of the best hotels in Amsterdam

Read on for a quick overview of four of our favorite hotels in Amsterdam.

Better yet: skip the reading (no no, it’s fine) and get tailored recs and complimentary hotel perks when you book your trip with Fora.

1. Pulitzer Amsterdam: a pristine snapshot of contemporary Dutch design in the heart of the city

Renovated in 2016 and perfect for a long week or a quick, 3-day stay in Amsterdam, Pulitzer is a fun and bold luxury hotel hidden within the city’s Canal Ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Despite housing over 200 rooms — all of which belong to 25 former canal homes that were originally built in the 17th and 18th centuries — Pulitzer Amsterdam has an intimate, homey vibe that captures contemporary Dutch lifestyle well. Every room and suite at Pulitzer is uniquely designed, with the best rooms providing lavish amenities and picturesque views of the nearby canal. Overall, Pulitzer is one of the absolute best hotels in Amsterdam for culture junkies.

For those interested, the Anne Frank House is only about five minutes away on foot, too.

Fora Perks at Pulitzer Amsterdam:

  • $100 food / beverage credit.

  • Breakfast daily.

  • Upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

2. Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam: one of the most iconic hotels in Amsterdam’s De Wallen neighborhood

For over six centuries, the ornate landmark that now houses The Grand has graced De Wallen’s equally storied streets. Formerly a convent, a royal residence, a military headquarters and then Amsterdam’s city hall before it was finally converted into a luxury hotel, The Grand promises elite accommodations and amenities in one of Amsterdam’s most coveted locations (check out the best of Amsterdam).

A Sofitel Legend property, The Grand boasts a deft blend of French elegance and ritzy Dutch influence, with lavishly decorated rooms and suites.

3. Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam: a gorgeous luxury hotel near some of Amsterdam’s best museums

Directly across the street from the Van Gogh and Stedelijk museums, you’ll find the Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam, one of the most luxurious hotels in Amsterdam (and a perfect choice for art buffs due to its proximity to the Museum Quarter).

The hotel’s 18th-century, Dutch Neo-Gothic façade might give you the expectation that its interior honors ornate and traditional European design — but this couldn’t be further from reality (not that the former is anything to balk at). Instead, you’ll find an endlessly stylish, contempo interior designed by Milan-based architect Piero Lissoni. This hotel is stunning — and its accommodations are, too. The Atrium is especially worth highlighting, as well.

(P.S.: speaking of Italy’s fashion capital, wondering where to stay in Milan? Read our guide.)

Fora Perks at Conservatorium Amsterdam:

  • $100 hotel / resort credit.

  • Breakfast daily.

  • Upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

4. De L'Europe Amsterdam: a world-class hotel on the Amstel River

Among the most reputable hotels in Amsterdam (if not the…), De L'Europe brings a familiar level of luxury compared to the hotels we’ve covered, albeit with a unique and sophisticated take on post-modern decor, including recreations of Dutch masterpieces featured in the Rijksmuseum.

De L'Europe is located in Centrum, not too far from The Grand, so it’s near many of the city’s most exciting sights. (Need more itinerary ideas? See our guide to things to do in Amsterdam.)

Fora Perks at De L'Europe Amsterdam:

  • $100 food / beverage credit.

  • Breakfast daily.

  • Upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.
