Oslo

Starting the trip off in Oslo offers an exciting introduction to Norway with its seamless blend of modern Scandinavian design, rich history, and accessible outdoor spaces.

The city’s revitalized waterfront at Oslo Opera House invites visitors to walk along the harbor or climb the building’s sloping roof for panoramic views of the fjord.

Families can explore fascinating cultural institutions such as the Viking Ship Museum and the interactive exhibits at the Norsk Folkemuseum, where centuries of Norwegian life are brought to life through historic buildings and demonstrations.

Neighborhoods like Aker Brygge and Grünerløkka add a lively atmosphere with cafés, parks, and waterfront promenades that make the city feel both cosmopolitan and welcoming.

  • Note: Oslo’s easy public transportation and walkable districts make it an ideal starting point for families eager to dive into Norwegian culture.

Bergen

Bergen feels like stepping into a storybook, with its historic harbor, colorful wooden buildings, and dramatic mountain backdrop.

The UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf is the heart of the city, where centuries-old trading houses line narrow alleyways filled with artisan shops and cafés.

The bustling Bergen Fish Market offers a vibrant taste of coastal Norwegian culture, while the Fløibanen Funicular carries visitors up Mount Fløyen for sweeping views over the harbor, islands, and surrounding fjords.

Bergen’s maritime heritage and proximity to nature make it a gateway to adventure—whether hiking scenic trails, exploring local museums, or setting off toward Norway’s famous fjord landscapes.

  • Tip: I would highly recommend taking a private yacht tour of Bergen’s coast in the summer! Many boats catch their own fresh seafood to serve to you throughout the tour, making it truly an amazing experience.

Flåm

Fjords of Flåm

Flåm provides a peaceful contrast to the cities, offering a front-row seat to the dramatic landscapes that define Norway’s fjord region. Nestled at the end of the spectacular Aurlandsfjord, the village is surrounded by towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and quiet farmland.

One of the most iconic experiences here is riding the Flåm Railway, a breathtaking journey that climbs through steep valleys, tunnels, and alpine scenery on one of the steepest railways in the world. Visitors can also explore the fjords by boat, kayak along the glassy waters, or hike to viewpoints overlooking the dramatic landscape.

Life in Flåm moves at a slower pace, encouraging travelers to pause and fully take in the scale and beauty of Norway’s natural environment.

  • Tip: I would highly recommend spending time in the floating saunas—an easy place to relax and experience the beauty of the fjords.

In sum

Together, these three destinations showcase the incredible diversity of Norway—from vibrant cultural centers to historic coastal towns to awe-inspiring fjord landscapes. The journey between them, often by scenic train or ferry, becomes just as memorable as the destinations themselves, making this family adventure as much about the experience of travel as the places visited.
