While our itinerary was packed, we enjoyed a relaxed pace, sometimes splitting up for golf, poolside naps, or exploration. Here’s what we did—and what we plan to do next time!

Welcome to paradise

After landing at Kahului Airport (OGG), we picked up our rental car, made a Costco run, and headed to Lahaina.

First things first

Once we were settled in, we walked down Front Street, explored local shops, and visited the historic Banyan Tree Park- this was before the devastating fire. The tree is still there and it is showing signs of regrowth!!

Had a casual dinner at Paia Fish Market—fresh fish tacos and garlic shrimp are a must!

Snorkeling & beach time

We spent a morning snorkeling at Ka’anapali Beach, while others in our group played golf. It was our first time snorkeling, and seeing the vibrant sea life was magical. We didn’t make it to Molokini Crater this time, but it’s on our list.

What to expect

  • Crystal-clear water, vibrant coral reefs, and tropical fish.

  • A stop at Turtle Town to swim with sea turtles.

  • Possible dolphin and whale sightings (seasonal)

We settled into a routine of dining out for dinner and enjoying leftovers for lunch. Another sunset meal on an open-air patio? Yes, please!

Exploring the island

Luau & exploring Lahaina

My husband and I are coffee snobs. We were very happy with the Hawaiian coffee. We purchased beans at a local shop and used those to get our mornings started. We spent this day going for a hike, enjoying the pool, and playing more golf

Things to do: (We didn’t go to these places on this trip, but will next time)

  • Visit the Lahaina Heritage Museum to learn about the town’s whaling history.

  • Stop by Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop for a delicious lunch (the banana cream pie is legendary!)

Old Lahina Luau

Evening highlight: Old Lahaina Luau. This authentic experience featured traditional hula, fire dancing, and a feast of Kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon, and coconut haupia. The storytelling was particularly meaningful, shedding light on Hawaiian history, including the U.S.-backed coup against Queen Liliʻuokalani. Expect:

Traditional hula performances & fire dancing

  • A feast of Kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon, and coconut haupia

  • A magical oceanfront setting at sunset

Ziplining!

Golf & ziplining over the jungle

Golfers in our group played at Kapalua Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament, while others opted for the more beginner-friendly Ka’anapali Golf Course.

Afternoon adventure

For an adrenaline rush, go ziplining with Kaplua Ziplines, or Skyline Eco-Adventures! Soar over lush valleys, waterfalls, and rainforests while taking in epic island views.

End the day with a casual dinner at Star Noodle, known for its delicious ramen, bao buns, and garlic noodles. So delicious!

Hiking & hidden waterfalls

Maui is home to some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world. Today, embark on an adventure to explore hidden waterfalls and breathtaking landscapes.

Top hiking spots: (We did the Waihee Ridge Trail hike, but the others are also really popular)

  • Waihee Ridge Trail: Stunning views of lush valleys and waterfalls.

  • Twin Falls: A shorter, easier hike leading to beautiful waterfalls (perfect for swimming!).

  • Makaluapuna Point (Dragon’s Teeth): A quick coastal walk with unique lava rock formations.

Road to Hana or relaxation

For those craving an all-day adventure, drive the Road to Hana—a scenic highway with waterfalls, black sand beaches, and jungle landscapes. We did not get a chance to do this. It is my only regret about this trip.

Road to Hana highlights:

  • Twin Falls: Easy hike to waterfalls.

  • Ke’anae Peninsula: Beautiful coastline views.

  • Wai’anapanapa State Park: Home to the famous black sand beach!

After spending time at Kapalua Bay snorkeling and sunbathing, the four adults in our group took time to relax with a spa treatment at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.

Maui Ocean Center & farewell to paradise

On our last day, we checked out early and headed to Maui Ocean Center, a world-class aquarium featuring Hawaiian marine life, coral reefs, and an incredible underwater tunnel. It was the perfect way to wrap up our trip.

Need to know

Since this visit was prior to the Lahaina fires, travelers will want to be sure that the restaurants and businesses in Lahaina are in fact, open. The rest of the island is open for business and has mostly recovered from this devastating occurrence.
