I come to Puerto Rico often, and it’s one of those places that never gets old. Staying at Fairmont El San Juan Hotel gives you the perfect mix of relaxing beach time and easy access to explore the entire island. This is one of those trips where every day feels completely different, but it all flows so easily, beach mornings, adventurous afternoons, and really fun nights.

About the hotel: A Puerto Rico icon
This is Puerto Rico’s most iconic hotel since 1958, and you feel that history the moment you walk into the lobby. It blends classic glamour with a lively, modern energy that makes it such a fun place to stay.
Room options include guest rooms and suites in the main tower, poolside villas, and oceanfront rooms with incredible views. The Le Labo bath amenities are such a nice elevated touch.
There’s daily live entertainment, DJs, live bands, and an energy that carries from dinner straight into the night. It’s also a great spot for weddings, conferences, and group trips.
On property you’ll also find tennis, basketball, pickleball, fitness classes, and a beautiful spa offering treatments like the Après Sun body treatment and Himalayan salt stone massage.

Day 1: Arrival, settle in & dinner
We landed at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and were at the hotel in about 5 minutes, which is such a dream after a travel day.
After checking in, we explored the property, walked through the iconic lobby, and headed straight to the pool and beach. The vibe is lively but still relaxing, with music playing and everyone easing into vacation mode. On slower mornings, we also loved walking along Isla Verde beach right outside the hotel.
If you want a quick snack, El Bistro is an easy stop, or there are little beachside cafés nearby.
Dinner at Caña by José Enrique:
What to order: Hamachi crudo, octopus salad, snapper
Drink: Mojito
After dinner, we stayed at the lobby bar where there’s usually live music.
Day 2: Old San Juan, culture & dinner
We headed into Old San Juan, about a 15–20 minute drive from the hotel.
As soon as you arrive, the whole vibe shifts to colorful streets, historic buildings, and so many little shops and cafés. It’s very walkable, so plan to take your time.
We wandered through the streets, stopping for little snacks and drinks along the way, then made our way to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Expect some walking, open space, and incredible ocean views.
Lunch at Barrachina:
What to order: Mofongo, seafood dishes
Drink: Piña colada
Right nearby is Pigeon Park, which is such a fun stop.
We also stopped at Café Istanbul for Turkish coffee and something sweet.
Dinner at Santaella: a great mix of upscale and local flavors with a really fun atmosphere.
What to order: Short rib, fresh fish, tostones
Drink: Craft cocktail
Day 3: Rainforest, waterfalls, adventure
We left early for El Yunque National Forest, about a 45 minute drive from the hotel.
As you head into the mountains, everything becomes lush and green. We spent the morning hiking, climbing over rocks, and finding waterfalls where you can swim.
There aren’t many food options inside, so bring water and snacks.
From there, we drove about 1.5–2 hours to explore:
Gozalandia Falls
El Ultimo Brinco
Along the way, you’ll find roadside stands for fresh fruit and quick snacks.
We ended the day at La Poza del Obispo Beach and grabbed shave ice from the truck nearby.
Dinner back near the hotel at Jose Enrique. This is one of the best spots for authentic Puerto Rican food, very local and always a favorite.
What to order: Fried snapper, rice and beans
Drink: Rum punch
Day 4: Rincón, lighthouse, surf & Steps Beach
We made the drive, about 2.5–3 hours, to Rincón.
The drive is scenic, and once you arrive, the vibe shifts to laid-back and surf-focused.
We started at Punta Higuero Lighthouse. There are small spots nearby to grab lunch or a drink while watching surfers, which is such a fun experience, especially since my family surfs here.
After lunch, we got in the water and surfed together.
Then we headed to Steps Beach. Walking down the steps is part of the experience, and once you’re there, the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling. The beach swing is such a fun little moment.
Dinner at La Copa Llena: right on the water with amazing sunset views.
What to order: Fish tacos, ceviche
Drink: Margarita or mojito

Day 5: Full surf & relaxed beach day
We stayed in Rincón and let the day unfold.
Morning surf, beach time, and just enjoying the slower pace. There are plenty of casual spots nearby to grab lunch right along the water.
Dinner at Tamboo Tavern:
What to order: Grilled fish, Caribbean dishes
Drink: Tropical cocktails
Day 6: Scenic stops, return & final dinner
We made our way back toward San Juan, breaking up the drive with stops.
First stop, about 1.5 hours out, Mar Chiquita Beach, a beautiful natural rock cove.
Then Boquillas Beach, a bit of an adventure but worth it.
You can stop along the way for roadside snacks or fresh fruit stands.
We arrived back at the hotel and had one last dinner at Meat Market.
What to order: Steak, seafood
Drink: Red wine
