During our nine-day trip to North Carolina, one day stood out above all the rest—our visit to Cataloochee Ranch. While we didn’t stay overnight, my family spent the entire day enjoying everything the ranch had to offer. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first heard “ranch,” but it turned out to be the perfect blend of modern luxury and rustic Southern charm.

Exceptional hospitality
From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by the outstanding customer service. Every staff member was warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. No one ever said, “I don’t know”—instead, they responded with, “Let me find out for you.” That attitude set the tone for an unforgettable day.
So much to do, so little time
Cataloochee Ranch offers a surprising range of activities. From horseback riding and UTV rides to painting classes, a golf simulator, a ropes course, and even winter skiing, there’s something for every interest and age.
We originally planned to attend just the Wednesday BBQ Feast, but once we saw all the options, we couldn’t resist diving in. One standout activity was “Bullseye,” which includes archery, axe throwing, and air rifle shooting. Our group of 11 had a blast, and the staff was incredibly accommodating—even letting my 4- and 6-year-old daughters participate using foam axes. It was one of those rare moments where everyone, regardless of age, could join in the fun.

A spa experience worth raving about
While we explored the outdoors, my aunt visited the spa at The Swag, the ranch’s sister property. She couldn’t stop raving about her facial, calling it one of the best she’s ever had. The Swag, a boutique all-inclusive hotel nearby, shares many activities with Cataloochee Ranch—like the Firefly Scavenger Hunt scheduled for that evening.
Unique artistic activities
If I had one regret, it’s not signing my daughters up for one of the ranch’s art classes. One in particular caught my eye: “Painting with Ponies,” where ponies create abstract artwork by stepping on food-covered, paint-filled bags laid over a canvas. Other creative offerings include botanical monoprinting, watercoloring, acrylic painting, and leatherwork—all designed to engage both kids and adults.

Style meets comfort: Accommodations
Although we didn’t stay overnight, I had the chance to tour some of the accommodations. The ranch offers charming one-, two-, and three-bedroom cabins, each uniquely styled with a mix of rustic, vintage, and modern design elements. They can sleep up to seven or eight people and boast breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains or surrounding greenery.
There's also The Lodge, featuring six suites and a cozy communal area—ideal for socializing, playing pool, or relaxing after a full day of activities. New accommodations are currently under construction, so the ranch is clearly expanding to welcome even more guests.

Food that feeds the soul
Before dinner, we grabbed drinks and a wood-fired margherita pizza at The Tack Room, the ranch’s on-site bar. I had a limoncello, my husband enjoyed a local craft beer, and the pizza was possibly one of the best I’ve ever had.
Due to a shift in weather, the BBQ Feast was moved indoors to The Switchback, but it didn’t dampen the experience. The buffet was phenomenal: garlic rolls, cornbread, mac and cheese, salads, grilled vegetables, and a hearty spread of pork, chicken, and brisket.
The desserts were equally unforgettable: blueberry burrata cheesecake (my favorite), strawberry rhubarb crisp, banana pudding, and an array of cookies and brownies—all garnished with delicate edible flowers.

A peaceful evening to remember
To wind down, we visited The Mercantile, a cozy gift shop and café. I enjoyed a latte, my aunt picked out a new sweater, and the kids eyed the pastries and ice cream. One especially fun option? You can customize your own cowboy hat for a unique, personal souvenir.
Outside, a telescope on the patio let us soak in the peaceful surroundings and gaze out over the mountains as evening settled in. We sat out back and watched people play Frisbee and my daughter on the swing. How else do you end a perfect day like that? With a picture in front of a rainbow, of course!

Final thoughts
Though we only spent one day at Cataloochee Ranch, I didn’t want to leave—and neither did anyone in my group. The ranch invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and truly connect with nature and loved ones. It’s an ideal destination for a family reunion—in fact, staff mentioned they were preparing for one the following weekend.
Cataloochee Ranch exceeded every expectation. Whether you're planning a quick visit or a full-on escape, I wholeheartedly recommend it. I’m already dreaming of going back to experience everything we missed the first time around.
Need to know
If you’re planning a visit to Cataloochee Ranch, be sure to book activities in advance, as popular options like horseback riding, art classes, and Bullseye (archery, axe throwing, and air rifles) can fill up quickly. Try to plan your trip for a Wednesday to experience their signature BBQ Feast, which is a true highlight. Also, don’t forget to ask about activities available at The Swag, their sister property just up the mountain—you might be able to enjoy a spa treatment, nature walk, or special event to round out your day.
