Multi-generation fishing trip: 30-minute plane from Ketchikan to Klowok.

Arriving to Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska is where the adventure begins. From either a 3-hour ferry or a 30-minute plane ride from Ketchikan, you will be greeted by Gina or Captain Luke, the lodge proprietors. The flight or ferry offers breathtaking views of the dramatic Alaskan scenery—often with whale and bald eagle sightings! After a quick stop at the local store for your snack and beverage preferences, you will embark on the 20-minute drive through Klawock, known for its legendary totem poles.

Once arriving at the lodge, you will be outfitted in your fishing apparel, settle into one of the 3-bedroom suites, and enjoy a home-cooked dinner. Wake-up time is early, and Captain Luke will discuss the strategy for catching salmon, halibut, and bottom fish, including lingcod and rockfish. A quick walk down to the dock to board one of the lodge boats, affectionately named “F/V Scout.” To describe the feelings on a boat in this area does not do it justice—the wind in your hair, the scenic waterscapes and mountainscapes that surround are simply breathtaking.

Beauty of a freshly caught fish!

After a day spent on the water, you will return to the dock for the captain to fillet your catch and his crew to clean and pack your fish to freeze and take home following airline regulations. This dock scene is fishing’s version of “après-ski.”

Grandpa and Captain enjoy the dockside fish-cutting after a full day on the water.

For dinner, you will sit around an oversized live-edge wood table; the antique stove will heat the room and you will be served a home-cooked dinner: miso-glazed black cod, filet mignon, halibut Olympia, and other mouthwatering local preparations. The 3-day, 4-night trip will be repeated until all the fish you ever wanted (in conjunction with regulations) are packed and ready to return to your home. Avid anglers will enjoy the professionalism and extensive experience of the lodge owners, while beginner fishers (of all ages) will be taught basic fishing skills.

Three generations on the boat—outfitted in all the right equipment.

What I loved most about Hooked on Alaska was the balance between rugged adventure and genuine hospitality. While the fishing is undeniably world-class, the experience extends far beyond what happens on the water. Captain Luke and Gina have created an intimate lodge atmosphere where guests feel more like friends than customers. From the personalized fishing instruction to the chef-prepared meals, every detail feels thoughtful and authentic.

Who is this for?

I would most highly recommend this experience for multigenerational families, groups of friends, corporate retreats, and couples who enjoy active travel. Experienced anglers will appreciate Captain Luke's extensive local knowledge and ability to target a variety of species, while beginners are welcomed with patience and instruction. This is also an excellent option for travelers seeking a less commercialized Alaska experience. Beyond fishing, Prince of Wales Island offers wildlife viewing, hiking, totem parks, birdwatching, and opportunities to connect with the rich culture and natural beauty of Southeast Alaska. Guests leave not only with coolers full of fish, but with a true appreciation for one of Alaska's most spectacular and remote destinations.

Looking for Alaskan wildlife.

Need to know

  • Hooked on Alaska Charters offers 3-day/4-night, fully guided, all-inclusive charter fishing trips for all experience levels.

  • 15–20% gratuity is appreciated.

  • Be prepared for all weather; but the lodge will provide boat gear like boots, pants, and jackets.

  • Book as early as 12 months in advance.

  • Best way to get to Craig, AK on Prince of Wales Island is to fly via Alaska Airlines to Ketchikan and then book either Island Air Express to Klawock or Alaska Inter Island Ferry to Hollis.

  • If you plan to see other parts of Alaska, it's suggested to end with the fishing experience so you can easily take your frozen fish boxes home.
