Eilean Donan Castle
One of Scotland’s most iconic castles, set on a small tidal island where three lochs meet, offering postcard-perfect views and rich Jacobite history. Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in the world and has been in endless movies and TV shows. Fun fact: I was married in this castle, so it is incredibly special to me!

Dunvegan Castle
The oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, home to the Clan MacLeod and surrounded by lush gardens and and seal colonies. The castle has absolutely stunning grounds where you can wander endlessly.

The island’s colorful harbor town and main hub, perfect for strolling, shopping, and enjoying fresh local seafood. Portree has absolutely incredible restaurants and lovely little shops. You can absolutely spend an afternoon wandering the little town. The colorful shops and storefronts make for amazing pictures among the almost-guaranteed moody Scottish sky!

A cluster of crystal-clear blue pools and waterfalls at the foot of the Cuillin mountains, famous for their magical beauty and wild swimming spots. Wear supportive shoes and bring a jacket!

A striking white-sand beach formed from crushed coral-like seaweed, where you’ll often spot grazing Highland cows and, occasionally, wild ponies roaming freely. The beach itself is quite a trek from the parking lot. Wear supportive shoes and prepare to walk!

If you’re comfortable, rent a car and get a little “lost.” Be prepared—the roads are windy and narrow, and you will most often be stuck behind a truck or a tractor, which will add hours to your adventure!
Pack for three seasons in one day. The forecast may say warm and sunny, but you will get a rain shower and it will be cold and windy.
When you’re up in the Highlands, there is a feeling of space I cannot describe. It’s just so vast and endless. Enjoy the views, pull over on the side of the road, and just take them in.
Pack snacks—there is not a lot of life (just cows and sheep) in between towns. And always stop for gas when you see a station, as there is no way to tell how far you are from the next service station!
