The Kahala Resort Site Inspection
Curator’s statement

The Kahala Resort is one of my childhood happy places—formerly Conrad Hilton’s first property, “The Kahala Hilton,” it is endlessly special to me. Our family celebrated special events on the beach or Plumeria House for special occasions, and my grandfather bartended at night. The Kahala exudes vintage Hawaiian style charm away from Waikiki’s bustling scene. Ideal for both couples and families, and popular with locals for a staycation, the Kahala neighborhood is a place to unwind without the crowds.

The Kahala Entryway

For those who want to experience Oahu without the bustle of Waikiki, the Kahala provides the perfect sanctuary. The Kahala is not flashy or particularly “cool,” but it has its own unique vintage Hawaiiana vibe that is peaceful without being tacky. So many Hawaiian hotels try too hard, and I’ve always thought the Kahala is effortlessly classy. The resort is perfect for honeymooners and couples, and also a great option for families. The resort’s grounds are limited, bounded by a beach park, Waialae golf course, and the ocean—so you don’t feel like you have to go too far to relax. The Kahala has retained its charm over the decades. A recent soft refurbish and fresh coat of paint have ensured it feels polished without losing its vintage charm.

Oceanview Room

In terms of rooms, the generously sized rooms all offer sliding Juliet balconies or full patios, and either a mountain or ocean view. Mountain view rooms will have a view of the mountains and valleys, as well as the adjacent golf course. I was particularly impressed by the Oceanview options, all of which are true suites—feature separate living areas, two dressing rooms, and some with separate bathtubs and showers. Corner suites offer sweeping views of the coastline towards Koko Head, or Diamond Head, and I always recommend those to my clients. While Dolphin Lagoon rooms bring you close to the resort’s playful residents, they are on the first or second story of a separate wing, and the dolphins can be noisy at night.

There are multiple options for dining at the Kahala. The Verandah is a charming spot for afternoon tea or evening cocktails in the main lobby area, and there are also rocking chairs out on the porch. Plumeria Beach House, the resort’s signature restaurant and my favorite, is a highlight for breakfast and weekend brunches and has a perfect sunset view. Always request a patio seat setting. Hoku’s upstairs is the fancier, elevated, island-inspired dining perfect for a special dinner. Arancino is an independently managed Italian restaurant on the property. When in doubt, always go to Plumeria Beach House!

In terms of other facilities and amenities at the Kahala, there is a smaller wading pool for kids, a regular pool, and a hot tub. Their dolphin education is also top-notch, as are the beach activities (reserve a cabana). There are complimentary fitness facilities and an onsite Hertz car rental desk. There is no need to rent a car if you are spending most time at the resort, so you can also rent by the day. If you are interested in golf, the golf course adjacent to the resort is not run by the Kahala. Reach out to the concierge to reserve a tee time at the Waialae Country Club next door. They do not guarantee spots, as these are first-come, first served, so when in doubt, call early.

Need to know

I would say the Kahala is family-friendly since their vibe is so relaxed, and the rooms have spacious layouts and connecting suites. Some connecting suites are linked by an outer door for privacy and convenience. None of the rooms have sofa beds, so rollaways must be requested ahead of time. While there is no formal kids’ club, the beach, pool and wading pool, and art or cultural activities provide plenty of options, as does the Kahala Mall for relaxation and entertainment.
