Curator’s statement
This place shouldn’t exist. The Norwegian fjords don’t feel real. They feel like you’ve gone off the edge of the map… and found what was never meant to be found. Only mentioned in hushed tones. For years, Valley Girl Darlene and I would watch videos of places like this on YouTube, just to relax. And honestly? We thought they were AI. Well… I’ve got news for you. When we approached the heart of the Hjorundfjord, we had either just stepped onto the Holodeck of the Starship Enterprise, or we’re living inside a Matrix of nature’s own design. And Mother? She made a masterpiece. We didn’t just sail through the fjords—we were immersed in them.

Where the reflections resonate
On a Norwegian Cruise Line fjord excursion out of Alesund, we transferred to a smaller tour boat and ventured deeper into Hjørundfjord… and our path got narrower and narrower.
The scenery down the fjords is just as quirky as the personalities of its inhabitants. Strong and sturdy, with some hidden moments of joy and wonder.
As time slows down within the fjord, the experience becomes serene and tranquil… allowing for exploration at an easy pace while embracing the reflections of the ripples of the water.
The wind whistles by your ears… cuts like a knife… and gives you goosebumps. Reminds me of standing on a street corner in my hometown of Chicago. But these aren’t skyscrapers. There are natural castles of stone and ice where Nordic kings reigned.
And fair warning: you might actually earn your Viking stripes out there—by injuring yourself in “battle” like I did—banging my shin on a rope catch at the front of the craft. But the visions? They’re worth the spoils.

Fortresses of solitude
Norway is the kind of place people come to disappear—or to face what’s chasing them. It’s no coincidence landscapes like this keep showing up on Hollywood’s silver screens.
In “Black Widow,” Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff retreats into this kind of isolation—hiding from a past that won’t let go.
And in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt doesn’t just run from danger… he launches himself off a cliff to escape it. Or find it? Only the fjord knows.
And standing here? You get it. This isn’t just scenery. This is where stories unfold… where people come to outrun something… or finally face it and kick its ass. Or make peace with it and become one with it.

Norway’s rugged but reflective terrain has a way of becoming a life coach for escapist travelers.
Let us say you want to stay in these desolate conditions for mentally therapeutic reasons. As a travel advisor, I can help arrange a stay in some luxury digs where all the greats found solace to be to their own throughs.
The famed Hotel Union Øye opened in 1891 and has had a plethora of famous literary, creative, and notable visitors, including Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany and of course, Norwegian Homeboy and Playwright Extraordinaire Henrique Ibsen. It is basically the Nordic answer to a Wes Anderson fjord retreat.
Then there is the Saga Fjord Hotel, another solid choice with a different vibe. Located right in Sæbø, it’s one of the main jumping-off points for Hjørundfjord excursions and ferries if you didn’t catch a ride on the cruise ship like we did. Fjord-front views of mountains are abundant, exploding upward around the harbor. Local guides specifically insist it is the most convenient base for a jumping off point for exploring the fjord, and we can get you down that path as well.

The Hotel Union Øye
Land of giants
That tiny, sleepy town of Øye is overseen oddly enough by a giant overlord known as Slogen.
A triangular pyramid rising straight up from the fjord… making it one of Norway’s most photogenic and iconic summits in the country. Widely regarded among the top mountain walks… with its dramatic fjord-to-summit rise and awe-inspiring panoramic views.
And then… the Skårasalen massif. Standing at a towering five thousand feet… one of the most prominent peaks in the country. A beloved destination in all seasons… with snow-melt waterfall ribbons cascading down its face… contrasting in appearance from different angles.
“Let’s get small,” the comedian Steve Martin quipped early in his prolific career.
“You are small,” say the fjords. But you are also special. Just like very crack and crevice of every one of these chiseled feats of natural wonder.

Living in oblivion
And just beneath all of it… people actually live here. Not thousands. Not even hundreds. Just a brave and bold few.
Living between the mountains… the water… and their thoughts. What splendor it must be to wake up and see this living YouTube adventurist’s dream vlog every morning. And what chills of fear and loneliness it could also bring to those without a centered soul.
Something tells me one inhale, one exhale, and one moment of clarity changes that in an instant.
That’s what we experienced.
The cruise tour guide’s missives fell on our busy ears, too busy taking in the echoes of these fjords.
What Norway can do for your sanity
And you can’t help but think… while the rest of the world keeps moving faster and louder… there are still places like this. And people here… waiting it out. Not hiding. Not escaping. Just… living in a magical moment, away from politics, deadlines, and headlines.
As an advisor, I can arrange a tour of many different lengths if you want to get in on this relaxation action! They have the Hjørundfjord Fjord Cruise roundtrip from Ålesund similar to what we took through NCL if you are looking for 4–6 hours of self-care on a bucket list scale.
Here’s your sign
So, if you’ve been waiting for a signal to get lost… Darlene and I are sending you a beacon today. Red carpet escapists assemble.
Pack your bags, bring your sense of wonder, and let us help you let the Hjørundfjord cast its spell upon you.
Because trust me… this isn’t just a place you visit. It’s a place that stays with you… echoing in your memory like the call of the mountains themselves.
It transformed us into a Viking and a Valkyrie—at least in our hearts—and it will do the same for you.

Need to know
Norway’s 15-minute rule
The weather changes in Norway every 15 minutes. Layers are the suggested as the wardrobe for making your way through this region, since when we went the temps we in the 70s when we arrived, and by the time we left they were in the 40s. Also, wind is a huge factor in the fjords, so a light wind-breaking jacket over a heavier lower layer can be very helpful in enjoying your trek to the unknown.
