Curator’s statement
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge holds such a special place in my heart especially just after the Christmas holidays, when the snow still blankets the cozy cabins and the festive lights shimmer across the frozen lake. There’s something peaceful and grounding about this spot in Jasper National Park, surrounded by mountains and nature at its quietest. I love skating on the lake, then warming up by the fire afterward, and seeing the resort’s friendly golden retriever who’s there daily to greet guests always makes it feel even more like home. It’s one of those places that makes you slow down and simply enjoy winter.

Driving from Lake Louise to Jasper is one of the most scenic and memorable routes in the Canadian Rockies. Along the Icefields Parkway, we stopped at the breathtaking Athabasca Glacier—even in winter, its frozen beauty is incredible to see up close. After entering Jasper National Park, you can still see the effects of the recent fires in some areas, but so much of the park remains untouched and absolutely gorgeous. Seeing the snowy, burnt trees mixed with untouched forest was both haunting and beautiful. It was a reminder of nature’s resilience.

The Fairmont grounds are full of wildlife

Once in Jasper, we loved walking through the small town, stopping at local shops, and grabbing a slice at Jasper Pizza Place, a fun, casual spot that hits the spot after a chilly day outside. We were tempted to hop on one of the scenic trains that run through the park, but time got away from us. Back at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, we joined in on the winter games available for all ages. It was such a fun way to spend the afternoon. Evenings were for dining at the hotel’s restaurants, Orso Trattoria and The Emerald Lounge, both cozy and delicious. After dinner, we settled around the lodge, enjoying the fireplace and reminiscing about our trip. Breakfast each morning was complimentary and such a treat, especially while watching the snow fall outside the lodge windows.

There’s a ski hill nearby, Marmot Basin, which looked fantastic, but for us Floridians, the negative temperatures kept us bundled up at the lodge instead! Luckily, we had quite a few days of skiing in Lake Louise before. We’re already planning to return one day to ski there, hopefully when it’s just a touch warmer. The drive back to Banff was magical. It was bright, sunny, and full of wildlife sightings. We felt like we had Jasper National Park all to ourselves, surrounded by quiet wilderness and the kind of mountain views that make you pull over just to take it all in.

I’ve visited Jasper in the summer before, which is beautiful in its own way, but there’s something especially peaceful about seeing it in winter. The stillness, the sparkling snow, and the cozy cabins of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge all come together to create a sense of calm and wonder. In the evenings, we’d soak in the outdoor hot tub with steam rising into the cold air while our ears and noses froze. A true Canadian experience. Though we didn’t have time for spa treatments, I peeked into the spa and it looked absolutely incredible. And of course, the resort’s beloved golden retriever wandering the grounds each day adds that perfect touch of warmth to an already magical place.

Need to know
If you’re visiting Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in the winter, plan ahead. The resort can fill up quickly during the holidays and prime ski season. Be sure to book dinner reservations and spa treatments early, as spots are limited and tend to sell out. If you’re planning to ski at Marmot Basin, reserve lift tickets and rentals in advance to save time and ensure availability. Winter driving conditions between Lake Louise and Jasper can be icy, so check the road reports before you go and give yourself plenty of daylight for the drive. It’s too stunning not to stop along the way. And don’t forget your swimsuit. I loved relaxing in the outdoor hot tub while surrounded by snow—a must-do Jasper experience.
