Luxury in Western Mallorca: Where Mountains Meet the Sea
Curator’s statement

Western Mallorca is one of my favorite places in the world. It has breathtaking landscapes, charming villages and a rich cultural heritage. The rugged Serra de Tramuntana mountains provide a dramatic backdrop, as well as incredible hiking for those that want to ramble. Picturesque towns like Deià, Valldemossa, and Sóller add to the region's charm. I especially love the serene beaches, hidden coves and crystal-clear waters. It is a haven for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility. The area's traditional Mediterranean culture, delicious local food and artistic history make it an essential destination for anyone looking to experience the authentic side of Mallorca.

Where to stay in Mallorca

Sailing from Port de Sóller

We did a private sailboat charter and I really recommend this to kickstart your adventure. We sailed from Port de Sóller, a charming harbor surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Sailing is a wonderful way to explore the region's beautiful, remote beaches and hidden coves. Don't miss the crystal-clear waters of Cala Deià. It is a secluded beach known for its stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Or opt for the dramatic Cala Tuent, a quieter spot perfect for a refreshing swim. You can also discover the pristine Cala Llucalcari, a small, idyllic cove that is only accessible by boat or a challenging hike if sailing isn't your thing.

Visiting wineries

Western Mallorca is home to several exceptional wineries where you can sample local wines and learn about the island’s winemaking traditions. A visit to Bodegas Ribas, one of the oldest wineries on the island, will allow you to taste a variety of wines produced from native Mallorcan grapes. If you’re in the mood for something different, Bodegas José L. Ferrer in Binissalem provides insight into the island's winemaking history and offers a selection of excellent wines.

Hiking in the Tramuntana Mountains

For nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the Tramuntana mountains offer some of the best hiking in Mallorca. The GR-221, also known as the “Dry Stone Route,” takes you through stunning mountain landscapes, offering breathtaking views of valleys, cliffs and the coastline. One of the most iconic hikes is to Castell d'Alaró, a ruined castle perched on a mountain top with panoramic views of the island. If you prefer coastal paths, the Cami de Cala Tuent offers a scenic walk from the village of Escorca to the secluded Cala Tuent beach, where you can enjoy a swim after your hike. We hiked on the GR-221 from Sóller to Deià and had an amazingly fresh seafood lunch with some well-deserved wine at the beach at Deià. A wonderful day of exertion and then indulgence!

Exploring the villages

The charming mountain villages of the region are a highlight for visitors. Wander through the cobbled streets of Deià, a village famous for its artistic history and picturesque setting. Visit Valldemossa, where you can explore the historic Carthusian monastery and enjoy the town's lovely cafés and quaint atmosphere. The town of Sóller, set in a lush valley, offers a mix of modern life and old-world charm, with its tram ride to Port de Sóller being a popular experience. For a quieter experience, head to Fornalutx. This is a tiny village often regarded as one of the most beautiful in Spain, with its narrow streets and traditional stone houses nestled in the hills. Another gem is Biniaraix, a small village set in a deep valley, known for its terraced slopes and picturesque, well-preserved architecture.

Relaxing on beautiful beaches

Western Mallorca is known for its rugged coastline, where towering cliffs and dramatic landscapes meet crystal-clear waters. There are several popular family-friendly beaches like Santa Ponsa, Camp de Mar, Cala Millor, Alcudia and Cala Molins. The region also boasts quieter, more secluded spots beloved by locals. Cala Deià is always a favorite, while Cala Portal Vells offers calm waters and a tranquil atmosphere perfect for a relaxing day. Cala Varques is known for its pristine beauty and crystal-clear waters, ideal for those seeking a more serene beach experience away from the crowds.

Explore the coves and sea caves

Besides sailing, consider exploring the region’s sea caves. The Cova de la Seca and Cova des Coloms are stunning. Many local boat tours will take you to these hidden gems, where you can paddle into the caves or simply admire the natural beauty from the water.

Visiting the Soller Botanical Gardens

For those interested in botany or just looking for a relaxing stroll, the Jardí Botànic de Sóller offers a peaceful retreat. It showcases Mediterranean and subtropical plants. It’s a wonderful place to spend a quiet afternoon surrounded by nature.

Need to know

I personally like to rent a car and drive when in Mallorca, and it is not a difficult place to drive. The island also has trains and taxis for those that would prefer not to drive. I help clients with organizing transfers, tours and even dining reservations in places like Port de Soller, where the harbor is lined with bars and restaurants taking in the stunning sunset view, or at Cala Deia, where it's wise to book ahead.
