Curator’s statement
Porto surprised me in every way—the light, the food, the fado, the way the city stacks itself up from the Douro like a painting you keep finding new details in. Torel Avantgarde matched that energy perfectly. A boutique hotel where every room is named after a different artist or visionary, it’s perched above the river with views that stopped me mid-sentence more than once. As someone with an art history background, walking through this property felt less like a hotel tour and more like a private collection.

We booked an Executive Superior room for a birthday trip—my best friend and I celebrate back to back, February 14 and 15—and, thanks to Fora Perks, we were upgraded to the Hedy Lamarr Suite Royal. This is the kind of upgrade you simply cannot get booking on your own. When we walked in, the staff had set up a bottle of prosecco on ice, a handwritten welcome note, a fresh fruit tray, and a little birthday cake with a candle. Two staff members delivered it personally. The note quoted Hedy Lamarr herself—”All creative people seek to do the unexpected.”—and it was signed "Artisans of Memories," which is what this hotel calls their team. That set the tone for the entire stay.

The suite was spectacular—honestly, almost too nice to leave. The bedroom opened to sweeping views of the Douro and Porto’s terracotta rooftops, and a separate sitting room held a large soaking tub with a fireplace beside it. Heavy velvet curtains closed off the bathroom, which had dual vanities, and the door to the suite opened with an old-fashioned key into a massive wooden doorframe.

Every detail felt deliberate and a little romantic. The front desk offered to fill the tub for us any time—just send a message via WhatsApp while we were out and it would be drawn and waiting when we returned, with robes, slippers, and herbal bath salts set at the ready. Even on a foggy morning, the room felt special. I sat on the window ledge with my coffee and my book, watching the mist settle over the river, and it became a highlight of my mornings and evenings. One night, we’d gone out to explore Porto and came back planning to catch sunset from the restaurant terrace—but the view from our room was even better. We grabbed a bottle of wine from the Digby and took it upstairs instead. Management spotted us on our way up, laughed, and said they totally understood.

Hotel history
Torel Avantgarde sits above Porto's historic center across two buildings—the original from 2017 with smaller rooms, lower ceilings, and some of the best river views, and a second building added in 2022 with larger, more modern rooms. Between the two, there are 59 individually designed rooms plus one maisonette—a suite with its own private pool. Every room is named after a creative icon, from Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol to Fernando Pessoa and Coco Chanel, and each is designed differently. The hotel loves that many rooms have a “surprise” that you won’t find listed online—an unexpected balcony, a mid-level room with an exceptional view, a detail that makes it feel like your own discovery. It's the kind of property where you’d want to return just to experience a different room, and the staff makes a point of ensuring repeat guests never get the same one twice.

The role of art
The art here isn’t decorative—it’s the architecture of the experience. Jorge Curval, a Portuguese visual artist, painted the works that line the rooms and main staircase, and also created the iron sculptures on the hotel’s facade. The interiors are a collaboration between Isabel Sá Nogueira, Nano Design, and a roster of Portuguese designers responsible for everything from the custom lighting to the furniture. The common spaces—especially the Sala das Flores with its suspended flower ceiling and red velvet seating—are deliberately provocative, rooted in what the hotel calls Portugalidade: a bold, unapologetic expression of Portuguese creative identity. The property also holds a Michelin Key, which speaks to the level of intention behind every detail. For someone with my background in art history, it’s rare to walk through a hotel and feel like the design deserves the same attention as the destination outside.

Room details
For advisors, the room distinctions matter. The first building has a more intimate feel—rooms are smaller with lower ceilings, but many have the river views that define this property. The second building gives you more space and a contemporary finish, though some rooms face the street. When requesting upgrades through preferred partnerships, always specify a river-view room and note which building—it makes a meaningful difference. Connecting rooms are limited to a few pairs, so families or friends traveling together should request early. And 28 of the 59 rooms have queen beds that cannot convert to twins—always confirm bed configuration at booking.
Facilities
The Camellias Garden behind the hotel has daybeds, orange trees, and the sound of running water. The indoor pool is heated to 30°C, with an outdoor pool and jacuzzi for summer months. The Calla Spa offers sensory showers, a sauna, and a full treatment menu. And the Digby restaurant runs from 11 a.m. to midnight—the terrace seating with its woven rope ceiling and river views is worth lingering at, even in the rain. In summer, there’s a poolside DJ and the Mojo Garden opens for sunset drinks.
Breakfast runs until 11 a.m.—eggs made fresh to order, honeycomb, a generous Portuguese cheese and charcuterie spread, chia pudding cups, yogurt bowls, and pastries that rotated daily. It felt more like a seated meal than a continental buffet.

Need to know
The property has a locker-and-shower setup that lets guests use the spa, pool, and common areas all day on both arrival and departure—even before check-in or after checkout. Worth flagging to clients on tight travel schedules.
The hotel sits above the historic center, which means the walk into town is easy—it’s only uphill on the way back from the riverside. Comfortable shoes and a willingness to embrace Porto’s hills are all you need.
Porto’s São Bento train station, just down the hill, hosts live fado performances worth seeking out. The hotel team will know the schedule.
March and April are particularly good months to visit. The weather is mild, the crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the terrace and garden spaces are at their best. In summer, expect poolside DJs and local events—the São João festival in June transforms the entire city.
The restaurant menu is small but well-executed. The chicken Caesar salad was great and the burger was enormous—and came loaded with BBQ, bacon, and cheese even though the menu didn’t say so. Room service runs an even smaller menu and was out of a few items during our stay, so plan on eating at the Digby or heading into Porto’s dining scene for variety.
All staff were genuinely warm and responsive. Erica was wonderful to work with on the booking side. And one last thing we couldn’t stop talking about—the scent in the hallways. We joked we wanted to buy it and bring it home.
