Hotel Spotlight: Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort

After extensive research, we chose Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, for our weeklong stay on the Big Island, and it exceeded every expectation. We were looking for a resort that felt luxurious yet relaxed—high-end without being pretentious—and Kona Village delivered exactly that.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with leis and tropical drinks before checking in at the resort’s open-air welcome area rather than a traditional lobby. While our room was being prepared, we enjoyed lunch at Kahuwai Cookhouse & Market and received a text when it was ready.

We stayed in a Tree Top King Hale, which was spacious, beautifully designed, and perfectly situated near the adults-only pool with partial ocean views. The resort recognized our anniversary with champagne, cake, and a handwritten note waiting in our room—a thoughtful touch that made our stay feel even more special. The hale also featured both indoor and outdoor showers, which quickly became one of our favorite amenities. While this room is ideal for couples, I would recommend a different room category for families with young children or anyone who has difficulty with stairs.

One of the things we appreciated most about Kona Village was its peaceful atmosphere. The resort offers both a family pool and an adults-only pool, yet even the family pool remained remarkably calm. This is not a resort with loud music, organized pool games, or an all-day party scene. Instead, it offers a tranquil environment where guests can truly unwind. The adults-only pool was perfectly heated, never felt crowded, and the attentive service made it easy to spend an entire afternoon relaxing. Food and drinks arrived quickly, and staff regularly checked in while providing complimentary water. My only minor criticism is that pool and beach equipment service ends early in the afternoon, which felt limiting on longer summer evenings.

The beach itself is beautiful and secluded, with complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling gear, and other equipment available throughout the day. It was one of our favorite places to relax between activities.

Dining throughout the resort was consistently excellent. Kahuwai Cookhouse & Market became our favorite lunch spot, and the pool menu was some of the best resort pool food we’ve ever had. We enjoyed breakfast each morning at Moana and dinner there our first evening. While it was our least memorable meal of the trip, it was still very good with generous portions and quality ingredients. Each evening, we looked forward to stopping at Talk Story Bar before dinner to watch the sunset. Jose crafted the best cocktails we had anywhere in Hawaiʻi, and his friendly hospitality became one of the highlights of our stay.

Although we traveled without our three children, I was impressed by how family-friendly the resort felt without sacrificing its peaceful ambiance. In addition to the beach and pools, families can enjoy pickleball, basketball, soccer, ping pong, bocce, shuffleboard, and other lawn games. It strikes a rare balance of offering plenty for children while maintaining the quiet, relaxed atmosphere many adults seek. I would absolutely return with our kids, knowing it would be a completely different—but equally wonderful—experience.

Overall, Kona Village impressed us with its exceptional service, authentic Hawaiian design, outstanding dining and cocktails, and serene atmosphere. It is one of the most thoughtfully designed luxury resorts we’ve experienced, and I would recommend it without hesitation to couples, families, or anyone seeking a truly relaxing Hawaiian escape.

While our stay at Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, was exceptional, there are a few things future guests may want to know before booking.

The resort is designed to feel natural and authentic, with mostly dirt and gravel pathways instead of paved walkways. While this adds to the property’s aesthetic, it also means shoes get dusty quickly, and walking after dark can be a little challenging in some areas. I also think navigating the property with a stroller could be difficult. Bikes are available for guests, although our room was centrally located, so we chose to walk.

Our Tree Top King Hale was beautiful, but the lighting system had a surprisingly steep learning curve. The light switches were not intuitive, and despite being fairly tech-savvy, we struggled to figure them out our first night. It became easier after a day or two, but it was one of the few aspects of the room that felt unnecessarily complicated, and it was very inconsistent.

Housekeeping was another area that could be improved. Because there isn’t a visible “Do Not Disturb” option on the room, staff frequently knocked to offer housekeeping or turndown service—sometimes at inconvenient times. While we appreciated the attentive service, there were several occasions when we wished there had been a way to indicate that we preferred not to be disturbed. One morning they showed up at 8 a.m. while we were still in bed, and another day they showed up at 4:30 when we were showering and getting ready for our evening.

As expected, food and beverages are expensive at a luxury resort, but the prices were even higher than we anticipated. We found some casual poolside lunches to be surprisingly costly, occasionally exceeding what we paid for dinner at nearby luxury resorts. While the quality and service were excellent, it’s worth budgeting accordingly.

Finally, pool and beach services end relatively early in the evening. Since we were traveling without our children, we had hoped to spend long afternoons relaxing by the pool, but food and beverage services typically wrapped up around 4:30 or 5 p.m. and equipment services before 2 pm. It wasn’t a major drawback, but guests looking to linger by the pool into the evening should be aware of the schedule.

None of these observations would keep us from returning. They are simply small details that are helpful to know in advance and can make it easier to plan your stay and set expectations for this truly beautiful resort.
