A Magical Day in Machu Picchu
Curator’s statement

I loved visiting Machu Picchu, a place I had always dreamed about, and I never gave up on that dream. I felt as if something was waiting for me there, and even now I want to return to the place where I felt I truly belonged. I flew from Lima to Cusco, a quick one-hour flight, and chose to stay overnight in the Sacred Valley, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Cusco by car. I loved waking up surrounded by mountains, enjoying a slow breakfast at the hotel, and not feeling rushed before heading to Machu Picchu. From the Sacred Valley, I took the train from Ollantaytambo Station to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 25–30-minute bus ride up to the site (though hiking is also an option for those who want the challenge).

Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic symbols of the Inca civilization and a major archaeological treasure of the Americas. The Classic Viewpoint near the Watchman’s Hut is the famous panoramic photo spot and it’s my favorite place to take in the entire citadel. As you explore, you’ll find the Temple of the Sun, where the Inca once worshipped; the energy there feels almost spiritual, like touching something ancient and magical. Continue on to the Intihuatana Stone, one of the most sacred elements of the site, and don’t miss the Temple of the Three Windows in the Main Plaza. Along the terraces, you’ll likely meet the llamas that wander freely across the ruins.

Walking along the Inca Trail, I kept wondering how the Inca people transported such massive stones and what tools they used. Every step made me feel like I was traveling back in time, surrounded by questions and awe for a civilization far ahead of its era.

Aguas Calientes is a great place to unwind after exploring the ruins. You can browse local handmade crafts, pick up alpaca textiles, or simply wander through the small shops before settling in for a meal with a view.

One of my favorite spots is Chullos Machupicchu, a Peruvian restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food while overlooking the river and surrounding mountains. My go‑to dish is the Grilled Trout in a Quinoa Crust, and I always finish with their Volcán de Chocolate, a rich, warm dessert that feels like the perfect reward after a long day of exploring.

Another great option is Full House Machupicchu Restaurant. Here, you can try alpaca meat, a local specialty, or choose something familiar like chicken fried rice if you prefer a simpler meal. Both restaurants offer friendly service, making them ideal places to relax before or after your visit to Machu Picchu.

Need to know

Cusco sits at about 3,400 meters (11,000+ ft), so many travelers experience symptoms of altitude sickness. It’s best to speak with a healthcare professional before traveling to Cusco, especially if you have concerns about altitude‑related issues.

The weather in Cusco can change quickly, so be sure to bring a jacket with a hood in case of rain. Pack water, a few snacks, and comfortable shoes you’ll be walking a lot.

For the best experience at Machu Picchu, I recommend hiring a knowledgeable local guide and choosing a morning entry for softer light and fewer crowds.
