A Waterfront Thanksgiving: Discovering DC’s Hidden Gem, the Thompson Washington DC Hotel
Curator’s statement

Nautical elegance meets holiday magic at Thompson Washington DC. Nestled in the vibrant Navy Yard neighborhood, this is where my family discovered what genuine hospitality truly looks like—staff who don't just serve you, but also care about you. The sleek, mid-century design and 360-degree rooftop views are stunning, but it's the details that linger: customized welcome letters, allergy-conscious amenities, doormen greeting us like old friends, bartenders curating playlists to match our mood. Navy Yard offers a quieter slice of DC during the holidays—reflective waterfront strolls and world-class Smithsonian culture just a Metro ride away. For families seeking a Thanksgiving escape that balances luxury with authenticity, Thompson DC delivers.

The Destination: Navy Yard, Washington DC

Washington DC's Navy Yard neighborhood has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, evolving from its historic roots as one of the oldest shore establishments in the US Navy into one of the city's most dynamic waterfront destinations. Located along the scenic Anacostia River, this once-industrial enclave now pulses with energy. The area is home to Nationals Park, Audi Field, and a thriving collection of restaurants, breweries, and boutique shops within The Yards development. All of these treats are just a short walk away: honey lavender lattes at Maman Coffee; the best breakfast sandwiches at Bethesda Bagels; lamb quesabirrias at Taqueria Xochi; cold beers at Tom’s Watch Bar; and, of course, a signature facial at Silver Mirror Facial Bar.

What makes Navy Yard particularly special during Thanksgiving is its unique ability to offer both serenity and stimulation. While tourists flood the National Mall during holiday weekends, Navy Yard provides a more tranquil landing pad with the same easy access to DC's iconic monuments, museums, and cultural institutions. The Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station on the Green Line puts you just minutes from the US Capitol, and the waterfront promenade invites peaceful morning walks as you digest that second helping of dessert. Our family made Navy Yard strolls a daily ritual—there’s something grounding about starting your morning along the Anacostia before the city fully wakes.

The property: Thompson Washington DC

Thompson Washington DC opened its doors in January 2020 as the Thompson Hotels brand's first property in our nation's capital, and it immediately established itself as the social anchor of The Yards. The 11-story property, designed by Studios Architecture with interiors by the award-winning Parts and Labor Design, boasts public spaces and 225 elegantly appointed guest rooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame breathtaking views of the Anacostia River and Nationals Park, while the signature Thompson robes invite you to linger in the luxury of your private sanctuary.

Our family took full advantage of the Hyatt Privé perks: daily complimentary breakfast at Surveyor, a $100 food and beverage credit, room upgrades subject to availability, and flexible early check-in and late check-out that made coordinating arrivals across multiple family members seamless. The daily rooftop happy hour from 5-7 pm became our unofficial family meeting spot. It was the perfect way to regroup after a day of exploring before heading out for evening adventures.

The service: Where Thompson truly shines

If there's one thing that elevated our Thanksgiving stay from excellent to truly unforgettable, it was the extraordinary team at Thompson Washington DC. Michael, the director of sales and marketing, served as my first point of contact and immediately demonstrated the hotel's commitment to personalized service—ensuring customized welcome letters awaited our arrival alongside thoughtfully prepared amenities (tree nut-free, per our family's needs). Eric, the director of operations, exemplified exceptional professionalism, ensuring our experience exceeded expectations with a quiet confidence that made us feel genuinely valued.

Blue, the food and beverage supervisor, was phenomenal—her warmth and attentiveness made every meal feel like we were dining with an old friend who genuinely wanted us to have the best possible experience. John James, the food and beverage manager, matched that same personable energy, showing genuine kindness and attentiveness to every member of our family throughout our stay and even putting up with our sports team arguments. Ryan and the entire front desk team were brilliant—responsive, thoughtful, and willing to course-correct any kink in our experience with grace and efficiency. The bartenders brought impeccable vibes and playlists that somehow always matched our mood. And the valet team? At $60 per night with in-and-out privileges, they delivered five-star doorman service that made every arrival and departure feel like a grand occasion.

The dining & DC culinary scene

The hotel's signature restaurant, Surveyor, is a culinary love letter. They harmonize classic Americana with exciting global influences. Breakfast at Surveyor became the highlight of our mornings—I found myself utterly devoted to the steak and eggs, the earthy mushroom toast, decadent French toast, the perfectly layered parfait, and what quickly became my signature order: the Thompson Ribbon latte. But our culinary adventures extended well beyond the hotel.

On Thanksgiving Day, we celebrated at Kitchen + Kocktails, where the holiday feast hit all the right notes, as we opted out of the traditional Thanksgiving fare. Earlier in the week, Grazie Nonna delivered Italian comfort food perfection, while dleña wowed us with modern Mexican cuisine (don't skip the Roja Lounge downstairs). Saturday brunch at Farmers & Distillers was the ideal send-off meal, and no DC trip is complete without Ben's Chili Bowl—we grabbed takeout after the annual holiday tree lighting at The Park at CityCenter.

For post-dinner vibes, the rooftop circuit delivered: Vue Rooftop and Realm Rooftop offered stunning city views, while Denson, Manifest, and Allegory provided the perfect dim-lit, late-night energy. My culinary suggestions don’t stop there, as I’ve spent the last 10 years working in DC.

Culture & holiday festivities

This trip was designed around one guiding principle: appreciating each other and our history. The crown jewel of our cultural exploration was an afternoon at the National African American History and Culture Museum—a profound, moving experience that deserves at least three hours of your time (with commitment to come back for multiple days to really take it all in).

We balanced that depth with playful discovery: window-shopping through Georgetown's charming streets, marveling at the architecture of the Library of Congress and National Archives, and wandering through the DC Holiday Market near The Hamilton, where we grabbed lunch. The sports fans in our group caught the Wizards versus Hawks NBA Cup game at Capital One Arena. One of our most memorable moments was the moonlit monument stroll on Thanksgiving night—seeing the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, and MLK Memorial illuminated against the November sky reminded us exactly why we chose DC for this family gathering.

Need to know

Accessibility in Navy Yard

For travelers with mobility concerns, Navy Yard is one of DC's most accessible neighborhoods. The area's relatively recent development means sidewalks, pathways, and public spaces were designed with modern accessibility standards in mind. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is paved and largely flat, making it navigable for wheelchairs, mobility equipment, and strollers. Thompson Washington DC itself maintains excellent accessibility features throughout the property, and the attentive staff is always willing to accommodate special needs—just communicate your requirements in advance, and they'll ensure everything is arranged for your arrival.

Getting around: Metro & rideshare

The hotel's location offers exceptional connectivity to greater Washington DC. The Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station on the Green Line is just a short walk from the hotel, with station entrances at M Street and Half Street as well as New Jersey Avenue. All Metrorail stations and rail cars are fully accessible, featuring elevators, Braille signage, extra-wide faregates, and platform gap reducers. You can check the Apple Maps app to see if the elevators are out at any stations. We used Metro extensively—getting to Capital One Arena for the Wizards game, the National Mall for our monument stroll, and downtown for the holiday market was seamless. The Green Line connects you directly to Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter, Gallery Place-Chinatown, and other downtown destinations. For rideshare users, Uber and Lyft operate seamlessly throughout Navy Yard. Reagan National Airport (DCA) is approximately five miles away—a quick 10- to 15-minute Uber ride, which made airport pickups easy when family members arrived throughout the week.

November weather: Pack in layers

Washington DC's November weather is famously unpredictable. It’s a transitional season where you might experience crisp autumn sunshine in the high 60s or a blustery cold snap in the 30s, sometimes within the same weekend. During early November, daytime highs typically hover in the low to mid-60s°F, but by Thanksgiving week, expect temperatures to drop to the lower 50s°F with morning lows dipping into the upper 30s°F. The key to comfort is layering: pack sweaters, a medium-weight jacket or coat, and versatile pieces you can add or remove as the day progresses. A warm scarf and comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring the waterfront and monuments—especially for those evening strolls when temperatures drop. November sees occasional rain, so a compact umbrella or packable rain jacket is wise. The silver lining of cooler weather? The museums are less crowded (except the day after Thanksgiving), the holiday lights are beginning to sparkle, and there's something undeniably cozy about returning to the Thompson's elegant lobby after a brisk walk along the Anacostia.
