A Taste of Provence, Relais & Châteaux Style
Curator’s statement

This journey through Provence and southern France centered around experiencing three exceptional Relais & Châteaux properties, each offering a completely different interpretation of French luxury, hospitality, and regional character. What made the experience so memorable was not only the beauty of the hotels themselves, but the warmth of the teams, the extraordinary food and wine, and the feeling that each property had its own soul and story. From timeless countryside château elegance outside Avignon to artistic sophistication in the center of Montpellier and romantic old-world charm in Aix-en-Provence, every stay felt immersive and deeply personal. This trip reminded me why southern France remains one of the most magical luxury destinations in Europe—slower-paced, deeply rooted in gastronomy, and effortlessly beautiful. After visiting each property firsthand, I now have a much stronger understanding of how to match clients with the right Provence experience depending on whether they prioritize wine, food, art, relaxation, romance, or village life.

One of the most special parts of this journey was seeing how different each Relais & Châteaux property felt while still maintaining the same exceptional level of hospitality and attention to detail. Every stop offered its own atmosphere, rhythm, and style of luxury.

The food and wine experiences became defining moments throughout the trip. Long lunches on terraces, sommelier-led tastings, Michelin-level dining, and evenings surrounded by gardens and candlelight all created the feeling of truly living in Provence rather than simply visiting it.

I also loved how naturally the days unfolded here. Mornings started slowly with coffee and fresh pastries, afternoons were spent wandering villages or enjoying vineyard experiences and evenings centered around long dinners and golden-hour aperitifs. Southern France encourages you to slow down and savor every moment.
For clients, these properties work beautifully for honeymooners, milestone celebrations, anniversary trips, luxury food-and-wine escapes, and travelers seeking a refined but authentic French countryside experience.

Le Prieuré Baumanière

Le Prieuré Baumanière

Located just outside Avignon, Le Prieuré Baumanière feels like a classic French château experience wrapped in quiet Provençal elegance. The property has a romantic, understated atmosphere with beautiful gardens, a serene pool, and one of the loveliest outdoor dining terraces of the trip. Everything about the experience feels intentionally calm and refined, encouraging guests to completely settle into the slower rhythm of southern France.

One of the most memorable parts of my stay was being personally welcomed by manager Alexandre and his wife, Sylvie, whose warmth immediately made the experience feel intimate and special. Rather than feeling transactional, the hospitality here felt deeply personal and thoughtful from the very beginning. It created the feeling of being welcomed into a private countryside estate rather than simply checking into a hotel.

The true standout experience for me, however, was the wine program and the incredible care shown by sommelier Laurent. His passion, depth of knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm completely elevated the experience beyond a traditional tasting. He guided me through a beautifully curated journey of southern French wines while explaining the regional differences, stories, and character behind each selection in such an approachable and engaging way. It was one of those rare hospitality moments where you could genuinely feel how much pride and passion someone has for their craft. Combined with the exceptional cuisine and magical terrace setting, it became one of the most memorable gastronomic experiences of my entire time in Provence.

This property is ideal for travelers seeking timeless French countryside luxury with an emphasis on wine, relaxation, gastronomy, and authentic Provençal charm.

Richer de Belleval

Richer de Belleval

Located in the heart of Montpellier, Richer de Belleval offers a completely different atmosphere—sophisticated, artistic, and deeply connected to the city's cultural energy. Montpellier itself feels vibrant and alive, especially during summer festival and opera season, making the location particularly exciting for travelers wanting both luxury and city life.

Although the hotel is newer, the interiors feel timeless. Every room has its own personality and artistic character, with an incredible appreciation for design and fine art woven throughout the property. The balance between historic architecture and contemporary creativity gives the hotel a distinctly modern French luxury identity.

One of the things that stood out most during my visit was the exceptional leadership and vision from the hotel team itself. The head of the hotel and concierge leadership created an experience that felt polished yet deeply welcoming at the same time. Every interaction felt intentional, attentive, and genuinely passionate about showcasing both the property and Montpellier as a destination.

The culinary experience here operates at an exceptional Michelin-level standard, led by two brothers whose creativity and precision elevate the entire stay. Dining here felt theatrical in the best possible way—artistic, immersive, and beautifully executed from beginning to end. One of the true highlights of the property is the bar space itself. The art and architecture are breathtaking, especially the ceiling installation, which immediately becomes a conversation piece and gives the hotel such a distinct identity. The hotel feels almost like a living gallery, where hospitality, design, and gastronomy all blend together seamlessly.

This property is perfect for travelers who appreciate art, gastronomy, architecture, and a more cosmopolitan luxury experience in southern France.

La Villa Gallici

La Villa Gallici

La Villa Gallici feels like stepping into another era. Located just on the edge of the city center in Aix-en-Provence, the property is romantic, charming, and deeply old-world in atmosphere, almost transporting you to an Italian countryside villa from another time.

The hotel is spread across two separate villa-style buildings with multiple terraces where dining takes place beneath the Provençal light and gardens. Every corner of the property feels intimate and cinematic, from the garden pathways to the softly decorated interiors filled with antique details and warm textures.

One of the things I loved most about Villa Gallici was how peaceful the property felt while still being within walking distance of the center of Aix-en-Provence. It created the perfect balance between relaxation and accessibility, allowing guests to enjoy the energy of Aix during the day before returning to a much quieter and more romantic setting in the evening. The property also features a beautiful pool, spa, and wellness area, making it ideal for travelers wanting to truly settle into the slower rhythm of Provence rather than constantly moving between destinations.

La Villa Gallici

What stood out most here was the warmth of the staff. Everyone felt genuinely welcoming, accommodating, and attentive in a way that made the stay feel personal rather than formal. The food throughout the experience was exceptional and perfectly matched the atmosphere of the property—elegant, relaxed, and deeply rooted in Provençal flavors and hospitality.

La Villa Gallici is ideal for honeymooners, couples, and travelers wanting an elegant, timeless Provence escape with easy access to Aix-en-Provence.

Need to know

Provence is a destination best enjoyed at a slower pace. Rather than trying to check off every village or attraction, travelers should allow time for leisurely lunches, vineyard visits, local markets, and unstructured afternoons soaking in the region's relaxed rhythm. Food and wine are at the heart of the Provençal experience, and many of the area's finest hotels and estates offer exceptional culinary programs, wine tastings, and opportunities to connect with local traditions. For travelers looking to explore beyond their hotel, Aix-en-Provence and Avignon serve as excellent bases for discovering vineyards, hilltop villages, historic sites, and the surrounding countryside.

For the most rewarding itinerary, I recommend pairing a countryside château stay with several nights in Paris, creating a wonderful contrast between the energy of the city and the tranquility of southern France. Summer is particularly vibrant, with festivals, cultural events, and outdoor performances bringing additional energy to destinations such as Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier.

Provence is especially well suited for honeymooners, anniversary celebrations, food and wine enthusiasts, art and design lovers, and travelers seeking a refined yet relaxed luxury escape. I can also help customize itineraries with château accommodations, private wine experiences, Michelin-starred dining, private transportation, and seamless Paris extensions.
